I love this.. I have tons of military surplus and I have sworn by it amongst all the haters..!! Of course all the haters keep buying new gear every year or two because their ultra lightweight shit falls apart under stress, and 35 years later I still have all my original gear.. just saying..!!! Keep them coming Dave..!! Parts 3, 4, 5 ,6, 7, 8, 9, and 10..!!

Love my old alice pack. Three day camping trips, going to the shops or out with the kids absolutely perfect! Tried newer bags like the osprey bags nothing carries heavy loads or keeps your back from getting sweaty quite like it.ATB👍👍👍

The military mess kit is in my top 5 as well. I have one for each of my family of 5 for camping and what not. A couple of weeks ago my church took all of the teenage young men on a week long camp out, and one of the requirements was to bring your own mess kit. I let one of them borrow one of ours since he didn’t have a mess kit, and he absolutely loved it compared to the Boy Scout style kits that everyone else was using. For those that don’t know there’s an old GI trick where you cradle the lid on the handle with the ring securing it in place in essence turning it into a 3 compartment dining tray.

A cool thing with having that adapter is if you had a molle pouch for your dirty water container, you could attach it to the side of your backpack (like the scout pack) upside down and let it drip right into your canteen in your side pocket while you're walking

Thank you for the new videos ! A modification that I have done to my Sustainment Pouches is to use a seam ripper to gently remove the plastic D-Rings from the sides and then slip them over the top two Molle straps and either just snap the strap closed or then just stitch the flat part of the ring to the bag material at the top with the strap still inside of it providing support . This then keeps the bag from flipping over when you attach a common utility-2qt canteen type of strap to it when when the rings are on the sides and the bag gets top heavy . It turns the whole thing into a more useful musset type bag that you can either use independently for gathering goodies , a stand alone day hiker and still attach to a pack . Hahahahaha I had to edit this post as I just watched your 1st video and saw what you did to your 1-qt canteen pouch , same thing ! 😂

I use a Sustainment Pouch as a Mini Ruck on my Plate Carrier. I can use it to carry extra Magazines, or anything else I want to keep with me, and even use it as a 24 hour Patrol kit. One nice thing, is they're usually one of the least expensive surplus items you can find. So I bought several when I got them.

When I was a kid, my dad had a metal canteen (may have been 1 qt) and it was covered by green canvas . The water tasted so good and cool from that canteen. I don't know for sure but he may have gotten while he was in the Air Force. Wish I had that canteen!

Couple of notes. The sustainment pouches readily attach to the sides of a medium Alice Pack. The Molle II Buttpack also holds precisely one military poncho and liner. I use the chemical suit bags to carry a light weight sleeping bag which I supplement with the poncho liner whenever I find myself camping out of a backpack.

Yes absolutely a part 3 I am a very big advocate of military surplus. In my opinion there is no better gear than that it's tried a true and battle tested gear.. I'd say it's getting really hard to find the woodland camo in surplus then it is in ACU or coyote brown and people want ridiculous prices for the gear...I have 3 Alice packs 2 in OD green and one in woodland but it's a radio pack where the top lid splits about a 1/4 of the way up the lid for an antenna and the Alice pack is my big out bag that lives in my car. Thanks Dave for the informative video and yes to part 3, 4 and 5 lol. nice job

Love this must have a part 3. I put on a mountain warfare course three weeks or so ago. I used the old Alice pack, my 2 - 2 quart canteens, some old m81 woodland tops and an old tiger stripe top. Our old pants suck compared to other stuff out there. So, I use Magellan’s super light weight multi stretch pants that are less than $30 from Academy. Literally, I threw away all of my other pants and blue jeans, and replaced them with these pants. The crotch blows out but is easily resown. Between those, my Vertx pants, and my Cryes…that’s all I use. I will be trying to some other brands, but for now that’s all I use. Dave, you actually inspired me to think like a 1800s frontier’s man and mesh that with my years in the Marine Corps, contracting and Police experience. My buddy is an avid ultra light back packer and did the AT and other places, I think he said he has 6,000 plus recorded miles from west coast and east coast mountain ranges and trails. So we’re trying to find a way to be a light infantryman again but not lose our modern tactical gear. Great videos brother, God be with you

Excellent video and I really like how you think outside of the box. There's absolutely no reason that Sawyer, MSR, and the other major manufacturers of handheld, portable, backpacking water filtration/purification devices shouldn't have various adapters available for sale that fit all the common military canteens and commercial water bottles/canteens in use for backpacking, ultra-light hiking, bushcraft, survival, and SHTF scenarios. That none of these companies has such adapters for sale just shows how short-sighted they are as well as how parochial their thinking processes are. Nearly every company in the outdoors space wants to sell *ONLY* proprietary equipment with no abilities to mate up with anyone else's gear.

I have seen "softer" 1 quart canteens. They would allow you you to squish the air out and prevent sloshing, but they were made out of material much heavier than the 2 quarts. The bottom of the canteen is about as solid as a normal 1 quart canteen. Mine is marked on the bottom, 2 US 2002 H.T.F. with the usual For Water Only, etc, etc on the front. I've haven't seen many of them. There is also a wide mouth version of the 1 quart that takes standard Nalgege caps. Apparently a mostly USMC cold weather item ,also a scarce item to find. The old Viet Nam era 5 quarts bladders are still out there, new in the box. Great series, grab the good stuff when you can!

I always use a large ALICE ruck, over the years I have really come to love the frame, after staying long periods of time at a winter campsite (trapping season) in the mountains firewood supply gets further from camp while trying to establish a wood pile for the whole month. The ALICE frame, combined with a pair of M1945 suspenders helps freight the wood back to be piled high and dry for the tent stove.

Good morning Dave, great videos on military gear. Definitely yes on making videos 3 and 4. I am the happy owner of a good deal of military gear but always looking for more. The 2 quart canteen has always been one of my favorite means to carry water and rest my head on. I've eaten many meals out of my GI mess kit. I thank you for the new ideas for ways to use this and other gears. You are very knowledgeable and an excellent presenter.

I have a large Alice pack and a medium Alice pack, both are rigged out in the "Hellcat" modification with the MOLLE shoulder straps and waist belt. Dave, Would absolutely vote for a part 3. When growing up I always bought my camping gear at the surplus store cause it was cheap but indestructible. One of the pieces I wish I would have kept was one of the old wool sleeping bag liners. Also regarding the old “butt-packs” there was a set of “H” suspenders that allowed you to attach a butt-pack to the cross piece of the “H”. You could still put one down low too.
