Question : are all ferro rods created equal? Bought one off Amazon and while I'm new to this and it makes fires - I'm getting nowhere near the amount of sparks I'm seeing from youtube videos. Surely most of this is my lack of good technique but could the quality of the rod be partly to blame? 1/2" x 5" rod.

Question about technique: Should you aim to draw the full length of the rod when creating sparks to avoid developing a "canoe" where the middle of the ferro rod is more worn down than the tip? Or does it really not matter?

Having the edge of the spine be a sharp edge is more important than the actual angle. And rounding over of the edge of the spine will dramatically decrease the effectiveness. I actually file the back of my knives to make the "leading edge" when scraping a slightly acute angle (87deg ish). I find that it is sharper, better for scraping hardwoods, and better on a ferro rod. This does give the knife a "handedness preference" when scraping. This is the same basic angle I use when sharpening a cabinet scraper.
@joelbenoitthewanderingbiso49764 жыл бұрын
don't know why one would want to "scrape" hardwoods anyway.

Having a pre-made flame extender like cotton wool & petroleum jelly (CWAPJ) can make life enormously easier. Fat wood is great, but I personally have found that a small dab of CWAPJ to catch the spark rather helpful. And no, that's not a reflection of my skill level, it's more an appreciation of the material limitations.
@kejadventures2414 жыл бұрын
Not to mention fat would makes all of your stuff very sticky. these videos don't do enough Justice explaining how messy fat pine is. Especially if I got to eat later, fatwood is a big No-No with a knife.

I haven't had good luck with the magnesium shavings. Bought off eBay from 3 different sellers. I have really good luck with almost any ferro rod as long as i use HSS or cobalt lathe tools. The newer USPS ground select shipping method really is poor. I've had 1/5 my Christmas presents shipped using that method just disappear.

Man that thing throws out some fireballs! Stainless knife won't work with flint my understanding?
@maxpinson50024 жыл бұрын
Won't work with real flint rock, like you would find in the wild and use to knap arrowheads and cutting tools and such. When you use it for making a spark, the hard rock is shaving bits of the steel from the knife blade that combust. The opposite is true with a ferro rod. The sharp edge of the striking surface is shaving away bits of combustible metal from the ferro rod to make fire
@joelbenoitthewanderingbiso49764 жыл бұрын
no, cause he's not using flint, he's using a ferro rod, to different things. Though yes a stainless steel knife will work on a ferro rod.
