Try sassafrass leaves or bark...works decent and grows in the woods!! Great video. A smudge fire has saved my butt many times.

Additional info on Yarrow: it grows on dry(er) and poor ground; roadsides are a good place to look, also field corners where less fertiliser gets applied. some clearings in the forest on high ground might also be good spots to look for it.

1) Hi Dave, excellent video. In my country we use this idea a lot. What I used to do a lot is use smaller sized round cone plates that are used for making fast "pita" only instead of using them for that purpose you simply build a small fire in the bowl area which allows for wind to get inside easily enough. There are MANY things that you can do with this and I'd recommend you to give it a try, it's the sort of thing you'd like a lot! You can find them from aluminum too so they weigh nothing.

when we camped on the intercoastal waterway here we cleared out an area in the middle of cedar trees. the sand gnats and mosquitos would eat you alive but wouldn't come in this area surrounded by the cedars. the cedar trees are the only thing we could think of that repelled them. we camped at this spot all different seasons. no matter when, still no bug problem inside the "wall" of cedars.

Wild Geranium seems to work, too. Northern Lady Fern, Red-Berried Elder, Labrador Tea, and Wormwood Seems to all be the same way. Plus you could put it in some kind of vegetable oil & slow cook it- phreshayr has a video on that). Don't know why he said that yarrow doesn't work. Never tried it, myself- but smoking tobacco tends to help.

I should have put your video to use when i went on my backwoods overnight-er. The bugs were unbelievable! Even my dog was going crazy. I did have some chaga with me which helped but when I ran out of that I used punk wood. Needless to say I'll be ready with a smudge pot setup next time! Thanks for the vid.

Nice:) Thanks for the yarrow tip:) I have a tip I bet you already know..if there is elderberry around you take a long thin branch of elderberry..push a rod or smaller diameter fire hardened stick and push it through the soft pith in the elderberry "firewand" , this will create a tube that can be used to blow under and into your coals...this why the elderberry tree is also called the Fire Tree or Fire bush...just my two cents..thanks again Mr. Canterbury:)

Recently I was out and bugs driving me even closer to nuts than I am normally. I dug a small hloe near my sleeping area and inserted some bigger coals from fire and then covered those with some rotten/punk wood and slept good for about 4 hrs and redid same and woke at sunrise!!! Wind direction is key.

i've used a simple smudge of a handful of duff, dry pine needles and such, inside my baker shelter to slow down-knock down the bugs that get into it.i just light i on the ground and let it burn a minute and that does the trick.once or twice i over did it and smoked myself out! this year i'm going to take a mosquito coil along and see how that works if i just burn a bit on a rock. the old,1920,30's ,outdoor books talk about how guys looked forward to camp at night and the smudge.

Hey Dave, I live in northern Arizona and I have a blood type that attracts mosquito's like crazy. Everyone in my group wont get bit once, but I'll get bit literally hundreds of times if I dont use high levels of Deet. There is however a certain gourd Cucurbita foetidissima H.B.K. that grows here. And in my research it says the natives used to dry out the leaves and spread it on their crops to deter bugs. Do you think burning it would have this effect? Thanks

seems yarrow would be the easiest plant to come by for making bug repellent. putting some yarrow tincture in a small spray bottle should be enough for most pests. but growing catnip is like growing weeds, so it would be a good plant for a self reliance garden. just be sure to put in a pot/bucket since it is invasive, best to kill it before it spreads it's seeds.

On Planet Arkansas where I live, there's nasty bugs and critters everywhere. Seven different venomous snakes, ticks the size of Alaskan King Crab and skeeters that can drain the blood of a small child in one meal. Not to mention armies of fire ants, chiggers and no see ums. I always use a hammock with a bug net. Keeps me off the ground and gives me a bug free, critter free, un-bitten nights sleep.
