I think that the D40X, like the D40, is a still-image-only camera.

I have a question. What button do I push to change my settings. Some of the functions like image optimization is not bolded and I cant click on it. It says my settings wont allow me to view it. Can you help me?

It's been years since I had one of these, but I recall that some menu options were inaccessible in certain modes. I forget which modes those are, however, that prevent some of the menu items from being accessed.

I'm glad I didn't miss this video in the series. When you said that the monocrome (B&W) setting isn't that great in this camera, that got me to thinking. I have recently received a Nikon D40 as a gift and I love it. What post-software would you recommend for converting my photos to black and white?

+Jm Diehl I use Photoshop CS6, but I've heard good things about Nik. With Photoshop being a subscription service now, I can't recommend it in good conscience. So at some point I'll probably be migrating away from Adobe and to something that's not a subscription. But in the interim, if you can get your hands on CS6 or even CS5, it's one of the best options because it can do most anything in terms of editing and has a great interface for editing the raw files that your D40 produces.

I was wondering is it necessary to upgrade the firmware on this camera? It is all currently default as I received and I saw somewhere on the internet a mention about upgrading the firmware.

It's always a good idea. Firmware versions will have stability improvements and so forth that help it perform better.

Tip, if your worried about the image the camera sees/saves use NEF/RAW the use all the data off the senor in post

This is a setting to display clipping on your photo. these falshing images show unrecoverable data on white or black (highlight and shadow) areas. It's there so that you can adjust and re take the photo as required without losing info.
