Hi David, on the immersion chiller needed to add below boiling whirpool hopping additions. I cool my wort with the counterflow chiller to let's say 80C. Then I stop the pump (and chilling) and add the hops and create a whirlpool. Easy method if you ask me,.
@FermentationAdventures
@FermentationAdventures 2 жыл бұрын
Agreed.. I don’t understand the comment on the need for an immersion chiller.. I can chill to whirlpool with a CFC recirculating back into the kettle. That is a standard part of my process anyway before transferring to the fermenter thru the CFC. I want to reduce hop isomerization before filling the fermenter.
@DavidHeathHomebrew
@DavidHeathHomebrew 2 жыл бұрын
CFC is designed to cool wort in small parts. If you cool the whole thing then its going to take a long long time compared to an immersion chiller. It can be done but its not practical.

Great video David! I have to say, the G40 is a miss for me. One key thing that makes the G30 great, is the ease of cleaning. Removing the overflow pipework, and replacing it with perforation is really not an optimal option. You redirect waterflow from the grain bed to the easiest path, the perforation, impacting sparge efficiency. On top of that, the reinforced channels that prevents the water from just spraying out of the perforations needs massive attention in terms of cleaning. How hard is it to just implement low density heating and the new controller into the G30? Best feature of the new units.
@aaronhyde5509
@aaronhyde5509 2 жыл бұрын
Watch a few of the other videos, you'll notice cleaning isn't too difficult, possibly easier than on the G30. Cleaning the splash guard well may require a brush if you don't address it right after mashing. I've also just watched a couple videos where gravity was overshot on the G40 when brewing G30 recipes, on their first brew, nothing dialed in... I don't think efficiency is a problem! :) Plus, you can stir your mash now, which will be much more efficient in solubilizing starches than a top plate would be (probably why commercial guys use mash mixers and not top plates).
@DavidHeathHomebrew
@DavidHeathHomebrew 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you. I can understand your first reaction here but the reality here is something quite different. Efficiency is very good and more reliable and cleaning has been very easy too. Check out my next video for much more brew information.

@eliten0Ob

@@aaronhyde5509 Commercial operations also got multiple vessels, on top of having pumps and monitoring differential pressures. Even though the unit operations are comparable, the tech behind is farther apart. Having brews overshoot with no dialing in is not really sufficient proof; you have a shallower, wider grainbed on this new unit, which is an improvement compared to the G30. How is the efficiency with comparable grain bed depths? I'll love to see Davids follow up video, as this is all very new, and it is easy being an armchair expert. But as a first impression, I'm not super impressed, and I'd love to see it change.

The S40 is a $100 system - it's literally based on Brewzilla knock-offs. The G40 is their way forward and should be the only system they offer at this size. They need to kill the other system and abandon the S40. Having 4 brew systems that all work differently is a recipe for confusion and disaster.

Excellent video again, many thanks. I was looking forward to seeing what the new systems would be like and perhaps find an excuse to upgrade my G30 (haha) but personally I think I'm better keeping my G30. There are some very nice features on the G40 but an £1100 40L systems which is less flexible, way too expensive and large for most homebrew sheds is a non starter for me and the S40 is a step backwards in my humble opinion so I'm a bit disappointed with the new systems. Please keep up the great work on this excellent channel . All the best :)

The S40 is clearly aggressively priced against the Brewzilla 65L however to me it seems the Brewzilla is the better choice. The S40 seems a lot simpler than the BZ. Also, I'm sure Kegland will come out with a new updated version before too long in response to this product. The G40 is interesting but I think they have priced it too high as usual. At €999 it would have been an obvious choice but at €1400 it's starting to hurt. I will stay with my G30 for now since I don't really have space for anything bigger but when the time comes to upgrade I'm sure there will be more compelling options out there.
@DavidHeathHomebrew
@DavidHeathHomebrew 2 жыл бұрын
I guess you could say that about much in the budget sector. The BZ certainly holds its advantages though, at its extra cost. The series 4 Brewzilla is not very far away in AU, Europe will see them early 2022. Its promised to be the biggest levels of upgrade yet. Lets see :)

Bit short sighted not to have the S40 Controller thingy not WiFi or even Bluetooth. One is tempted to take the drilling machine to my existing G30 Grain Basket of similar vintage to yours but the side exit may lead to grain bed channeling unless they are very small diameter. Very nice Bottom Plates and a welcome reduction in the lift height Mashing->Sparging on the G40 although I would also expect this on to have a greater "Boil Off" rate so different volume calculations. I am looking forward to the Mash Session you will have on Them/It(?). I hope that this time GrainFather supplies it with the correct IEC Cable and connectors in the UK. The previous ones were of the lower current version of the IEC Plug/Socket. Many thanks. :-) Announce ment at last :-).

Thanks David, lots of info for anyone considering a GF brewing system. Been using the G30 since it came out, but it's now retired. I had the time and skills to build my own 45l system based on the Brewtools. I was hoping GF would do something about the leaky lid on their conical that only holds gas pressure at about 1.5 psi. Assuming it's capable of higher pressures, would be nice to convert to pressure fermentation with a replacement lid. But maybe that's not possible.

Looks like the S40 has no pump for recirculation or to aid transfer from kettle to fermenter. That means buy a pump or use it at a higher level for gravity transfer and perhaps a winch or pulley to help lift the heavier malt pipe. Its a BIAB and really a different beast to the others. I expect heating been faster if the new ones were insulated, maybe the G30 time without jacket would be a fairer metric.

I think the minimum 5kg grain bill on the S40 is a fail! If you like to brew 1 keg batches of low to mid strength ABV I think you will be chucking a lot of beer away in the process in order to accommodate the 5kg minimum. And no the answer is not to buy an outdated g30 either. If you like to brew lower ABV beers then you will have to pony up for the G40 by the looks of it, or start using lots of mini kegs which is a pain. I threw together a test recipe and to brew a 4.4% blond ale with a 5kg minimum would require 26L into a fermenter. And I know they seem to be aiming at two kegs in their marketing but that makes this system less flexible imo. It seems to me that they have made a conscious decision to favour higher ABV brewing with the S40, is that a fair assessment? That won't suit a lot if brewers then who may think the S40 is just a dumbed down and cheaper version of the G40, because it's looks like that's not the case at all. It's great though if your stick is moderate to high ABV IPAs and you like to brew 1 keg at a time as the S40 will likely suit you very well. Is that a fair assessment?
@DavidHeathHomebrew
@DavidHeathHomebrew 2 жыл бұрын
Sorry for some reason I missed this. Keep in mind that this 5kg minimum grain bill size is just based on what you can mash in an automatic way and get good efficiency. However due to the open nature of the mash there is no reason that I can see that would stop you from adding a smaller amount of grain and then boosting the efficiency with some short periodic stirring.

Personally, I use platform on wheels for my GF, unfortunately without easy access to this part. As I had about 40 batches on my GF30, I had 2 cases of burning the bottom - both in situations when lautering took more time than usual, yet GF wanted to raise temperature as far as 98-99 celsius. After cleaning this up, during next batch GF had trouble to raise temperature and as learned on Grainfather yt tutorial video I resetted boiler. I know my fault, lessons learned, which is for me is one of the best things about brewing at home. But still, I would feel much more comfortable having these buttons somewhere more accessible.

Here in Mexico our power supply is 127 volts. Can either the S40 or G40 operate on this?
@aaronhyde5509
@aaronhyde5509 2 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, the S40 and G40 units will not work at 127v/60hz (which is pretty much the same as the United States' 120v). All units globally require 220v. You may have an appliance plug (behind a stove or washer and dryer) as is common in the US that provides 220v, but I'm unsure if this exists in Mexico.

@@aaronhyde5509 Thanks Aaron. I would have to buy an adapter that cranks it up to the 220v that is required. Messing about with electricity is for sure a risky business in Mexico, so I won´t be taking this further. Really appreciate your response!

It is the same controller but that is the only similarity. I have full overviews and first impression videos coming on both new systems on Sunday that spell everything out.

Any idea if it will be possible to upgrade your existing G30 with an upgrade kit? Would anything fit in the G30 such as the grain basket I would imagine the controller would be compatible and maybe being able to upgrade the pump

Could the grain basket on the s40 be used as a hop filter during boil?

Hmm I would imagine it could be ok but this is not something ive tried. It could mean some boil up around the basket though

Are you able to go over the power options? Was reading the G40 can be 10A or 15A at 3300w at 230v I'm not sure how it works in other countries but the upgrade can be via a larger power cable?
@DavidHeathHomebrew

Sure. The power options there are just for NZ/AU as I understand it.

I'm using a 35L Brewzilla 3.1 and thinking of upgrading to a G40. For me the price point is good and cheaper than the G70 and has the option to brew a double batch. The G40 build looks nicely made with rolled edging and the power upgrade path to 15A.

When we can expect g40 brew video ? P.s. im torn with a dillema i could buy slightly used g70 for 950 eur or new g40 for 1250 , but your video really puts g70 to shame so i wonder is g40 better ? :D

im more than a little worried about this product, the screen/controller is 100% identical to my cheap Klarstein and the new basket with the feet is the same so i will presume its now a generic product made in China like the rest of them. water easily gets behind the front perspex of the controller as it did with mine within a couple of brews (no effect though on the operation ) and sits there for ever more- and the feet on the bottom of the basket bend continually and will eventually fail i'm sure-not what id have expected of a grainfather product, they now have a name for themselves and i feel they are capitilising and going cheap and cheerful, trying to tap a larger market, it may be the end of the good times for them going down that route. dont believe me look at a photo of the s40 and a photo of the Klarstein apart from the size they are pretty much the same, even the power buttons are identical

Sorry for some reason your comment was put in a spam bin. Yes it is true that a generic controller is used on the S40 and it is certainly very basic.

I have seen the Grainfather shop price of nearly 1300 euro for the G40. I think that's pretty stout price. Especially when non of the parts can be user replaced like the heating element. The S40 is another Chinese knock out like brewdog,brewzilla,klarstein. The Grainfather spot welded heating elements and 1300 euro price on the G40 are not worth it for me. The Brewtools B40 cost 1700 euro and has better specs , modular parts. So my choice would be a B40 with a immersion chiller. On high priced products i would like to be able to repair parts when needed. On Grainfather this heating pad cannot be replaced. Then it would be a expensive trash-bin after 3 years when there's no warranty anymore. Should the G40 cost under 900 euro, people might change their minds. But at 1300 Euro Brewtools B40 would be my choice.

I suggest checking out my next two videos that go deeper into these two systems. At least then you will have a full enough knowledge on both. Yes these are not cheap but having used both a fair bit I think they are worthy of a further look past the content on KZbin currently.

@@DavidHeathHomebrew Thats fair enough. I will look at those other 2 vids if i can find them. But the 1300 euro price taq is definitely a no go when the G40 is not modular. I have a feeling that people would rather buy the G70 then a G40. But i will look at those other vids.
