@storminboy5 жыл бұрын
Collins is the most underrated boxer ever. It's a myth he beat them both past their bests. Eubank fought Collins after one of his best wins vs Henry Wharton and beat him. Then in a rematch almost a shutout. Benn just couldn't handle the absolute toughness and durability. Stopped him twice. I love Eubank and Benn for what they did for British boxing but Collins smashed them both twice. Past their best argument? Collins was older than Eubank and Benn the same age. I'm English but Collins was a diamond.

Tis true!! In his younger days& early career,he employed more of a 'Counter Punching' Style! And he had been training& doing most of his fighting,over in the U.S & been mixing in more skillful,& tougher circles! And this Pedigree showed up in the end!..And we all have opinions,but most of the unbiased fight Pundits& fans know the results he achieved against Eubanks x2 and Nigel Benn x2 wouldn't have been any different if these fights had taken place 5 or 6 yrs earlier! ( when he was also younger& less battle weary!) And in Rnd (4) u saw the old Collins style of fighting,Boxing,slipping Punches and countering!! But full respect to Nigel Benn he was great for British ' Prizefighting' and never failed to put on a show! .And for those who might be interested (or not?) That piece of music is a classic. Steve Collins obviously one of the hardest men ever in his divisions. He and Eubank took punches from the best better than anyone. Incredible. We will never know what the future would have held had Eubank not stepped back in the tenth of their first encounter. The only fighter who ever looked like he could finish Collins and as many pundits have observed, simply lost the killer instinct more and more as the shadow of the Watson damage hung over him....waving in refs coz he was worried what could happen to his opponents. Hmm. Still Collins kept winning and is clearly one of the best ever.

@johncohen98004 жыл бұрын
Totally agree with Rance Davis. Benn's corner realised the fight was unwinnable and if it continued, he was only going to get hurt. It is good to see the corner taking responsibility for their fighter. I saw Roberto Duran Vs Davey Moore on KZbin and Moore took a horrific beating, yet his corner continued to send him out round after round. It is a shame his corner didn't have the balls to do what Benn's corner did.

Nigel Benn was one of Britain’s finest ever fighters. But he fought too many fights in a short space of time. Had he taken a few months more between fights, to recover from the punishment he took in so many amazing great fights. I dare say he would’ve been more successful and beaten Steve Collins, or gotten it to points at least. His corner did do the right thing, to pull him out in this fight, but they should’ve never let him get into that situation to begin with. He was playing Russian roulette with his health and you can only go on that way for so long, before your luck runs out.

Collins got a laser with the right hand, busted his face as he was able to land clean. Benn was shifty on defence early but couldn’t sustain the pressure. Collins a master at the mid range/inside game, effective pivots while smothering and landing punishing short shots. Super durable, strong, very good stamina, good defence. Dangerous when he gets clipped as he comes right back with something strong. Highly impressive to tame a wildcard like Benn, a true disciplined gladiator. Not flashy but brutally effective.

Really enjoyed that fight and remember rooting for Benn because I liked his bombs away style. I continued following his fights for a few years after. I never considered him to be a great fighter though. More of a crowd pleaser like a Frank Fletcher than a really good talent. Fun to watch. Soured on him a little after this fight. It appears his camp had a plan here of going out there for a few rounds, then if things don't go their way, pull out. I understand things happened after the McClellan fight, but I don't feel the Benn camp went into this fight in an honest way.

I don’t think it’s fair to say he was faking after the war with McClellan. It was brutal. McClellan was an unbelievably hard puncher.

What chances would collins have had with either in their prime ? Beating them both tail end, what other success???
@mcvicarross72 ай бұрын
Nigel Benn should never have got into that ring that night! Both him & his corner knew he was fkd from about the 3d round, they both were hoping for a lucky punch early doors, Steve was bang on the boxing fans who paid alot of money to go & watch that were totally cheated!
@jonathandewberry289 Жыл бұрын
Both were great fighters but the combination of their styles was a lot of clinching and missing and consequently both their bouts are unenjoyable.

I wonder what happens to the WBC Collins took from Benn? Did he lost it to someone before this fight?
@lucasm38796 жыл бұрын
manny mo This was for the WBO belt Collins won from Eubank. Benn had lost the WBC to Malinga, in Feb '96.

Benn should have retired after the McClellan fight.
@francishegarty80875 жыл бұрын
Of course he should have retired after the Mc Clellan fight and maybe Eubank should have also after the 2nd Watson contest, at least we wouldn't have to listen to these excuses as to why they lost to Collins? Alan Minter and Barry Mc Guigan were both involved in fights with opponent's who lost their lives, before they won their World Crowns along with many others . I don't recall either Minter, Mc Guigan or any of their fans using those unfortunate events as an excuse for defeats that would follow.

@@francishegarty8087 oh come on clearly he was referring to the fact that the mcclellan fight ruined Benn,watch the first Collins Benn fight i remember watching it live and could see Benn was shot,not taking anything away from Collins at all he was a great fighter
@francishegarty80874 жыл бұрын
@@keithshayler1972 Hi Keith, I get what you mean and understand you fully and fair play to you for saying that Collins was good. I do know for a fact, that Benn and Eubank, ducked Mc Callum, 100%, Benn in 92, Eubank 90, and that they both didn't want a part of Collins, ever. I understand Benn wasn't the same fighter after the Gman fight but he had 3 straight, good wins after, then got beaten, fair and square by Malinga, who got his just rewards for his daylight robbery defeat to him, in 92, 3 years before the Mc Clellan fight. Collins was miles better than him in the 2 fights, if they fought a few years before then, Benn ain't KO ing him, and Collins always got stronger after slow starts, even Mc Callum can admit to this, and also refused him a rematch after their February 90 fight. Safe regards to you and family in these crazy times.
@keithshayler19724 жыл бұрын
Francis Hegarty even Hagler didn fancy McCallum and i don’t blame them,I loved that era in the 90s and I loved Collins as well and agree that no one was stopping Collins.it was just painful watching Benn afterwards he was a shell.Eubank wasn’t passed his best I was in Manchester to watch his first fight with Thompson and he gave Thompson hell and we know what he did to David Haye,Shame Collins and calzaghe didn’t happen that would have been one hell of a fight
@francishegarty80874 жыл бұрын
@@keithshayler1972 Very true, I'm from Dublin, saw lots of Collins fights, but I'm a fight fan, massive Lewis 1, saw him fight in Dublin 95, also saw Tyson V Francis fight, February 2000, Men, Arena Manchester, Calzaghe and Hatton were on the bill, even Hagler was there along with lots more. As a genuine fight fan, l always cheered for guys from Ireland or the UK v other guys, especially the US. Your right about Benn, it was sad to see him then as he was way better earlier, he and Collins are great friends, with lots of respect for each other, they both don't like Eubank, and Collins has no respect for him. If Calzaghe fought Collins, it would have been a slog, a brawl, not good on the eye and going the distance, with big Joe getting the nod, deservedly by 2 rds. I've been catching up on Lloyd Honeyghan, used to like him, he was very very good but he also liked the high life.

I remember watching Collins beat Chris Pyatt and a load of the British middleweights....Neville Brown I think....we used to have good Friday night boxing on TV back then....I knew Collins was good when the great Angelo Dundee spoke about how tough and skilled a fighter he was and this was years before I ever saw him on British TV.....I think Benn was a bit shit at this stage if I'm being honest.
