This series is fast becoming one of my favorites on youtube, its so interesting to see someone keeping old technology and techniques alive, but not in a stuffy museum way. I especially enjoy the parts where you show doing repair jobs on equipment how it used to be done, I've watched every episode this far and look forward to many more in the future.

That old boring bar! Grandad said he had bored cyls with a hand crank setup, I believe he said it was a Rottler. If I remember correctly, he said it was a horrible experience.... Took him to the shop I was working in, back in the late '70's. He'd been retired many years by then. Soon as I opened the door, he said "well the smell hasn't changed any in all these years" I showed him the Rottler we had there, it was a table type, and the head floated on the table over the block to be bored, centered, and then clamped with an air clamp via a T slot. Then we went over to the Sunnen ck-10 hone. After we left, he said that If he'd had this modern equipment, he'd have made good money instead of just getting by. Thanks for posting these videos, enjoy the warmer weather in Florida, and hurry back to You Tube!

The coldest winter I've ever had was in southern Oregon where it rained all day and was below freezing at night. Being from Los Angeles I just couldn't get used to it. Understand why people head south for the winter. Really enjoyed the video Dave. We had a war surplus Brown and Sharpe shaper in metal shop. I thought it neat that it only needed a tool bit and you could take the tool post and put it on a lathe. Thanks for posting.
@davidrichards55948 жыл бұрын
Sure can, but you don't need the rocker on the shaper.

Winter is quickly approaching MN and after seeing your cold shop, I am more appreciative of having the luxury to just flip a switch to bring the heat up and another switch to energize the lathe. Always love the music made by your engine and flat belts. Thanks much for the engine update and have a safe trip south.

To keep a way of life that was before and a way to achieve a outcome of work in the simplistic ways is very cool. You are a very good of an example of, how you can achieve and do work that is accurate and simple,with out the must have tech knowledge of today. To make repairs or build. Thank you, if I could I would give you more support to keep your channel and way going.

Great stuff - thanks for going to the effort to put these videos out! It's really interesting to see a small scale steam power system for a shop like that. I had to go re-read some history to get some context. Rural electrification in the US didn't have a big push until the mid-1930s and that wasn't just individual farms - lots of smaller towns didn't have electricity. We weren't "fully electrified" nationally until some time in the 1950s.

Man, that shaper is a monster. You say the weather stinks but it looks beautiful to me. Where I live it doesn't snow and the humidity is so high when it gets cold occasionally it feels like you're going to freeze to death due to the moisture in the air stealing your bodies heat like a thief in the night.

Funny I was just wondering if a vertical mill and fly cutter would be allot faster than the shaper. But I was also already wondering if that wasn’t newer tech than 1925. But then ya answered me before I needed to ask. Read my mind a couple years in advance. Great work and thank you MUCH for showing us these gems!!

Your shop represents a great step back in time in a country that seems to want to throw everything away when it gets old. Beyond the obvious wonders of your shop is that you keep the shop so well organized and clean, a rare thing to find on most of the KZbin shop videos. Congrats on your housekeeping. I had a shop teacher way back when that always said not to blame a machine for poor quality of work, the quality comes first from the machinist who knows how to use his tools. But I could never figure out how we came from machines in the 1800s that measured in tenths of an inch to machines today that measure in microns. How does a low accuracy machine produce a machine with higher accuracy, any ideas? Thanks for all our efforts, I am sure that all of us watching appreciate your work.

Hi David, I've enjoyed watching your videos. I have a series on my channel about building a small scale live steam loco. With regards to the squared off ends to the piston and valve glands it's to prevent the soft packing material extruding along the rods with the backwards and forwards. I've found a 45 degree chamfer could increase that likelihood and shorten the life of the packing. Jonathan
