🤣 This is awesome 😂 Your wife did fantastic! She was so funny! Loved all the different get ups! Thanks for the detailed video - I know that one of my questions was about would there be any "weeds" that would kill my plants? Other than that, I try and keep in mind it's normal to save food scraps/peelings and such to smell and be nasty after sitting all mixed together in water, covered and in God only knows what temperature! My husband understands a little more now since I got him to watch your original video about it...before that he thought I had lost my mind 🙃. Thanks again for everything you & your family do to help teach us these things. I also want to thank you for putting up your daughter's info on Etsy.. ordered seed from her since then. God Bless 😊

If you don't have a cover for your bucket or barrel, just leave a couple inches of room at the top. Cover it with a heavy garbage bag or something similar. Pour a couple inches of fresh water on top of that plastic. The weight of the water will force the plastic to form a good seal over the fetid swamp water. This will keep smell under control and greatly reduce the chances of skeeters filling it with eggs. You may of course have to change the water on top if eggs get in it, but that's easy.

It doesn't have to be homestead level or giant garden. I have less than 300 sq ft of garden, but do what you can with what you have! Swamp water + biochar for the win! Everytime our family has a firepit I sneakily make biochar. The kids like the big fire, the wife likes that I'm reducing clutter and finally getting rid of those branches, etc. Once the kids are bored, drown the fire. divvy up the charcoal to buckets (w lids) throw in a bunch of weeds, add water and pee in it! I also will sometimes add yeast from a batch of beer, misc leftovers from the fridge, moldy bagels, and a splash of molasses, just for the extra minerals. brew for a week, use the dilute liquid and top it up. Continue using the liquid until the next firepit. Next firepit, I'll empty the bucket sludge into the compost bin with a bunch of browns and start over. working great so far. All that to say, It doesn't have to be homestead level or giant garden. I have less than 300 sq ft of garden, but what you can with what you have!

Anyway thank you, very inspiring.

If you didn't dilute the mix and you are having (yellow) leaves after using it that kinda seems to me like the plant could be telling you that's it's (STILL HUNGRY) Most likely with just straight yellowing leaves it's asking for more (Nitrogen)

The oldest stuff works the best. I fill 5gal buckets w/ "chop and drop," cover w/ water (let the chlorine evap out first), toss in a cup of sugar or molasses, maybe some pee, sIap a lid on and set aside. I found a bucket that was over a year old and my plants exploded w/ huge healthy growth! I dilute it enough to make it spread thru my 100th of an acre garden, about 10-30% skunk water, tho I've used full strength without problem if it's aged enough. I chop the plants into small bits for speedy decomp and leave it around the plants as I water w/ a ladel. It's also easier to mix or stir. I think the dead anerobes feed the good bacteria in the soil. I'm experimenting w/ woody bits now. The Chinese use this stuff called "Wood vinegar" (for fertilizer, pesticide, and animal feed, etc.) which is created from condensing the smoke from making biochar, but all decomp is just a slow burning fire (chemistry wise). My thinking is, I can get a carbon/"biochar" product from the wood and a "vinegar" product after it's broken down. I can't do fires where I live and this is probably better environmentally. My microbiology prof use to giggle everytime he said, "The forests are ALWAYS on fire." 😁🔥🌳🌲🪵🔥🤭 because they are. Everything is constantly breaking down, oxidizing, and rebuilding.

I'm planning on using this your way, and in a more extreme way. I'm in middle desert...the big challenge is fertility. I'm intending on using this as an addendum to create soil on barren areas. I'm likely using clover as cover, and then putting swamp water into the drip system at about 20% with irrigation water, long term. The acidity is important as our dirt is super alkaline, and mostly clay. I'm plenty with minerals...near zero organic matter. So I'm also going to put a few inches of wood mulch. Basically im trying to kick life back in to the dirt! I know I need to add yards of compost, but it is seriously difficult to compost here, with the alkalinity and dry environment. I'm following a hybrid method from an AZ farm that revives soil by planting sorghum in 3 inches of compost. I think this method can function as a supercharger to enliven dead soil, as long as I keep a cover crop growing, and chopping/dropping.
@Bigfoottehchipmunk
@Bigfoottehchipmunk 2 жыл бұрын
Another idea to help in desert areas is to use what's called core gardening. Basically you dig a trench in the middle of a garden area, which would depend on how you garden, but you bury straw or other dead, somewhat broken down material in the trench. You plant around or even over it, and it acts like a sponge to hold more water in the area so you can water more deeply but don't have to water as often. MIgardener talks about it in a couple videos. He lives in Michigan, in an area that gets pretty dry summers, I guess, but he adopted it from a desert farming method.

@A R my land is flat, so swales won't do much. Once I get going, I may do some water lenses though. I'm also doing pit beds, instead of raised. Lined with 6" of stone, and dug down to 3 feet. My challenges include very high wind in the spring and fall, so the pit beds will protect seedlings from wind damage, as well as focus water. But...we get near 300 days of sun here. If I can figure out the balance, I could be able to grow year round with a combination of greenhouse and seasonal plant choices.

Ever since you taught me how to make this stuff I use it all the time and I use it on everything. I have a lot of weeds at the bottom from my raised beds and I set up a whole huge storage tote of the stuff. I've been thinking about starting another container of swamp water in one of those big plastic garbage barrels. The plants love it and I only ever wait to let it rot when I first set it up. Then I just top it off. It smells like sulfur but it's so thick and funky. I stirred in soil from the beds and the yard in addition to the weeds I used and I tried to use diverse weeds figuring they likely favor different compounds that they store. I hope it includes everything including micronutrients. My soil amendments and compost stretch so much farther now and there's no different fertilizers for different plants, except for blueberries. I will use Blueberry Tone, I think it's called, because I understand blueberry care is a bit different. You made gardening so much more affordable David the Good and I will be forever grateful to you for that sound advice.

@olgakuchukov6981
@olgakuchukov6981 2 жыл бұрын
Fantastically creative job! I’m super psyched to be seriously making fetid swamp water - as in buckets with tops instead of large buckets of rain water and swamp, al fresco and al yucko. I will admit I don’t always wear gloves and I get to enjoy the fetidness for ... a while. It’s a garden-saver for me since my area is overfull with jumping worms (Amynthas species aka “crazy snake worms” aka Alabama jumpers” - maybe look into them, David, would love to hear your take. They might be useful in remediating your soil and with chickens and plenty of biochar and dry, sunny, hot conditions, they may not become a problem. My area is the exact opposite- cool, moist shade, tons of trees raining down organic matter daily, rich river valley soil.) They’re destructive here in the Northeast to the forests which have evolved without any earthworms since the last ice age. They eat ALL the compost and organic matter and fungi and leave behind their bacteria rich but hydrophobic dry crumbly large castings. (Another answer to “why not just use compost.”) Too much nitrogen, too much of a good thing., overshoot. Just like your friend with the anaerobic soil and difficulty starting seeds, same here, seeds are hard to root in the dry crumble without amending. Perennials growing way too tall (all the N) and falling over due to lack of structure in soil - yup, chop and drop. Anyway, fetid swamp water to the rescue! Plants seem to be loving it! Resuscitated a stunted tomato plant and it is finally putting on some size. Short growing season here in Vermont and I’m part sun so I’m pushing it, always. I’m swamping Japanese knotweed! The leaves and tender stalks, though I’ve noticed the bigger tougher stalks break down and rot quickly enough. Not doing the roots, though. Could probably in a bucket set aside for months, should try that. I’m also swamping forsythia and privet. Bwa ha ha, feels great to be swamping the plants that root way too easily when used as chop and drop. I found a channel of a guy slightly of south my region, he’s in central Massachusetts or some such, making J knotweed compost using plant material up until July 1st or so. For years his garden is thriving from his J knotweed compost. He says after July 1st the stalks are too tough and have set sprouts. Swamping that would be the way to go. Nothing survives the swamping. I would like to know which seeds survive, however. I’ve been throwing dandelion seedheads in. Mainly because I don’t care about spreading them, they’re food. But I’m also swamping various grass seedheads and wonder about those. I’ve noticed when used in the heat of the day, the swamp watering attracts flies. But everything attracts flies. There is another channel, Ripe Tomato Farms, guy named Jeff over in Vancouver z8 or 9, who praises making your own fert with garden weeds. His videos are cute with plants’ eye view shots, otherwise fairly straightforward. Thanks for making art out of gardening videos!

I’ve been using this for 2 months now. Absolutely amazing results for what it is. Obviously it doesn’t do what miracle grow would as in immediate huge results. I have also noticed less pests. I’m thinking the health of my plants have something to do with that.

This is my favorite way to deal with invasive weeds that I don't want to risk growing out of my regular compost, like the 100+ square feet of sansevieria that I dug up.

YES. I do the same with buttercups. Drowning the roots of plants that can spread by rhizomes or pop back after long periods of neglect is the best way to put an end to them for good.

I have a large stick (guava branch) that I stick in the side of the garbage tote with lid I use for my Tea in my front yard...my son gets a kick out of watching me stir it every day like it's my cauldron. I try to do it early morning so the smell doesn't bother my neighbors. 😀

Rachael was hilarious 😂 but she asked the questions I've been asking. I've got a nasty combination sitting in a bucket from all kinds of kitchen scraps. So I see your barrel is on tight. I've had my 5 gal bucket lid on not snapped on tight, but then I did snap it on all the way and it's sitting in the sun. Will it make the top pop off on a mini explosion?

My brother-in-law from Kentucky told me that his grandma would get buckets of fetid ditch water and use it on her garden years ago! 😁

I use rain water and fertilizer and a few scraps in my biochar activation, but always wonder if I should start some bacteria ladden batches separately with water from a nearby swamp or pond. It's not really the bacteria I'm interested in but just the minerals so I see no need to grab the wild bio-critters for my mix.

Very entertaining! I'm picking up a barrel tomorrow. I've tried to compost and have failed miserably mostly due to lack of discepline. I think I can make swamp water though and looking forward to trying it. Bought the book and just finished it - having found the swamp water info near the end. Thanks for all you do, David and Rachel.

I have a particularly nasty batch brewing that I started by watering a newer 5-gal. compost bucket I have going. The bucket sits on rocks within one of those black plastic open oil drain pans from the Dollar Tree. It has a little spout on the side that allows you to pour the FSW 'starter' out easily. My upstairs neighbor hasn't complained yet, but I got all the drippings in another bucket covered and festering as I add other things to it in the meanwhile until I am ready to use it.
