How do you know when to subtract or to add?

Without a context, I'm going to guess at what you're referring to. After you set up the equation, if like terms are on the same side you can add them together. If they're on opposite sides of the equation, you inverse the operation (if terms are added, you subtract them from both sides to get rid of them). Hope that helps.
