Lunar is so charming in its simplicity. I've seen it once described as "the greatest RPG love story of all time" and it really is in my opinion. It feels like the archetype JRPG in that regard. Love your assessment of the FFVI "everyone can do everything" argument. The game's so open to possibilities that you CAN teach everyone every spell but there's really little reason to other than "completionism". There's fun stuff like "natural magic only" challenges or deliberately limiting your party so every playthrough is different. It's absolutely a 10/10 and easily my favourite JRPG of all time.

Lunar 1 is good. But I like Lunar 2 so much better. Lunar 2 is less cliche, I like the Lunar 2 characters more. I like Lucia more than Luna. The battle system and abilities are better in Lunar 2.

@@ValisFan3 Lunar 2 also had more content. The post game in Lunar 2 is insane! There are 5-7 bonus dungeons with tough as nails regular enemies and super bosses at the end.

Yeah Golden Sun was awesome. Camelot was an amazing developer made Golden Sun and Shining Force games. DQ3 is excellent I am looking forward to the HD remake of it. FF6 is great too. Suikoden II great as well. Some really awesome games on this list. The trails games are awesome too.

I think the best ff has to be in the medieval world and include crystals. Best one should also have a party with members whose roles are actually differentiated from the rest. Also the last ff to be directed by the creator Sakaguchi himself, I believe FF4 is the closest to an objective best ff you can get if you ask me.

Not sure I agree with the “must be medieval and have crystals” part but I agree FFIV is probably the best representation of Final Fantasy. VII is the most important one though, and my personal favorites are IX and XIV.

It's always funny to see Grandia 2 in this kind of list, cause this game is whether listed as fantastic or "the worst thing that could happen after Grandia 1". I've played the game 20 years ago, played it again few years ago again and I still think nowadays it remains as one of the most memorable RPG I've played in my life. So very glad to finally see this one listed to where it really belongs

I think Grandia 2 was great but I kind of feel like it was less unique than Grandia 1 which is why I prefer 1. I kind of have the same opinion on the Xeno games. The Xenoblade trilogy are probably the best well rounded in the series. However if you look at the story behind Xenogears, Xenosaga, and even XBCX, you can see just how much heavier the franchise could lean into science fiction. Xenoblade is Star Wars where the rest are like Dune, Star Trek, Aliens (Predator), they are so extremely sci-fi.

Okay, when I was a kid back in the 90s, my best friend’s mom bought FFVII and while I had never played a PlayStation at that point, me and my buddy loved to watch her play. I was 10, friend was 8, Cloud would go on the be the name of the lead character of every game that let me name my character for the next decade… Fun story, but the real point. My friend and I where essentially little kids who where essentially very annoying, and after falling in love with FFVII and wanting to make us to be annoying away from her, she gave us Fantasy Star III for the Sega, and Dragon Warrior III for the NES. I played DQ3 until the battery died, and traded it for Lufia 2. I loved DQ3, or Warrior as it was for American kids in the 90s before the internet was big, still love that game. Thanks for putting it so high up the list! My favorite game was, and still is, through vague memories DQ1, my parents rented it when I was 2 or 3, and I put work into that rental even though I couldn’t read yet. Stairs were my enemy.

I would've included Tales of the Abyss in that list. Yeah, Luke is incredibly grating, but his colossal screw-up and redemption arc, along with a world with such fantastic lore and a great set of characters, that makes this game a 10/10 for me.

Final Fantasy X has: * Worldbuilding that succinctly explains everything from the world's cultures to the existence of every enemy you encounter * Narrative reasons behind every boss battle * Character interaction and dialogue during battles, permeating characterization throughout the game * Character deaths that are logical extensions of the narrative, rather than out of nowhere, making their deaths more tragic and heightening themes of sacrifice and loss FFX deserves a X/X.

I believe it is not possible to make a complete list of 10/10 games, because there are more than we can think of. Each one value different traits of those games, and all of those opinions are well founded, because they all make sense. Some games here like Chrono Trigger could easily be 10/10 for me, because I am one of the few people from Europe who played that game the year it was released in US, renting it in a video store no less! Also Valkyrie Profile blew my mind away. I couldn't believe how much fun I was having playing it, battle after battle. I was so in love with that game that I felt I didn't want to play Silmeria at all because I was so afraid it could ruin the first one for me, but so lucky I was wrong, because the second one is as good as the first one. But one game I really really treasure from my childhood is Terranigma. I played that game alone, at home, when I was a teenager and right after finishing it I couldn't keep myself from starting it over again. There are many games that are meaningful for lots of people, the important thing is not that 10/10 but the feeling you have when you remember playing them back then. Remembering good times is one of the most precious things in life, never stop doing it :)

"The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky" since that and second chapter was developed at the same time and meant as "1 game" but because of delayment and money issue they split them up... those two together would have been a 10/10 in my mind, and people can say what they want about the serie and its cult members (... me included) but there is a reason they released 11 games now in it and still making games for it, it touched some of us which we never experienced since the 90s playing zelda, mario, final fantasy etc! magical game!

@@Naryoril the president literally said, it was costing a lot and we were taking too long so we decided to split it into two, but was always meant as 1 game. and I think it should be looked/judged as one, just like "the lord of the rings trilogy" instead of judged as 1 or 2 each. two twoers is peoples least favorite movie/book usually but it make sense, its the middle part.

Only a couple here I haven't played. I need to get at Xenosaga. Isn't it such a shame that the original Xenogears fumbled on the second disc so disappointingly? Square was just currently so obsessed with their marquee FF games that they missed an opportunity for a game they should be all-time revered. As usual, you and I are on the same page. Lufia 2 is such an underrated gem. And DQ3 is probably just the best game of its series, even if stuff like 5 and 8 were masterpieces, too. Choosing a Final Fantasy is a task not made for mortals. But it usually comes down to 6 or 7 for most. I personally prefer 9, but I spend most of my adolescence playing 6 for hours. Doubt anyone will be mad at Chrono Trigger at #1. Ha. Literally one of the most perfect games ever created. I'm not exaggerating when I say (including New Game+), I've run through this game maybe 250 times. There is nothing like maxing out those stats when you see Ayla get the Bronze Fist and just lash out 9999 criticals. Thanks, as always, David! You're such a warm welcome to see stuff we both grew up loving.

If I've not played these 10 games, I've certainly heard of them. Some of my favs on your list include Suikoden 2, FF6 (a close 2nd to my all time fav FF9), and Crono Trigger (Frog is best!). Currently trying out XBC3 (my first XBC game). It's very impressive.

Rimworld is a perfect game. Not a game for everyone, but perfect. Between the developer adding more all the time both to the base game and as major DLC, excellent mod support and a huge modding community, you can enjoy over a thousand hours of playing, then change up your mods and enjoy a thousand more. I’ve got over 1.5K hours in the game and I only have the first DLC, and I haven’t touched some of the biggest mods available, like rimworld of magic. It’s not an RPG but you do get soo many stories from it, both triumphs and tragedies. Several good let’s play are on the yudtubs, so check one out sometime.

FFVI, yeah I said it without hesitation, but I will admit I'm a bit biases. This game has a very special spot in my heart because it was the one game that totally stole it and brought me into the genre. Now, it's not the first RPG I ever played (that honor goes to the the original Breath of Fire on SNES), but it's the one that pretty much made me shun every other kind of video game out there. The funny part is that I originally shunned it. I had watched a friend play it and my original reaction was "I can't play this! I'll never remember Sabin's Blitzes!" Fast forward and I can still do them from muscle memory...and back then "Bum Rush" to me was just a quick fatal attack from behind...oh the age of innocence...oh yeah I did have a crush on Celes and wished I was Locke at some point but looking at me decades ago. In all irony I never actually finished the game until the Final Fantasy Anthology edition came out for PSX...even though I had the SNES cartridge...after playing it so many times with the "Paladin Shield" Game Genie code so many times, I just never could bring myself to finish it...until that version came out so I had to beat it straight but at the point I could probably play the game in my sleep. OK, I think I've made my point, but all the games in your list deserve to be there. Suikoden II would be my #2. I'm happy for the upcoming remake, but the old sprites look horrible to me right now. They at least could have given them the "Pixel Remaster" treatment.

Dark Cloud 2 is almost perfection. Interesting over world building concept, interesting weapon upgrading system, you can transform into monsters as Monica and have a Mech as Max, also the story is very engaging, has mini games (golfing and fishing), and has a lot of post game content with a whole new area. Also it looks visually beautiful even for a PS2 game, it has cell shaded graphics that hold up even to today standards. Easily a 60hr game. Only bad thing I would say is the dungeons and monsters are samey and repetitive. But even with all that still to me a 9.5/10, one of my favorite games of all time. Hoping we can eventually have a Dark Cloud 3.

Great list. What I find striking in your choices is how the only completely original game of the past 10~15 years you put is Xenoblade 3. Radiant historia is close, with the original in 2010 and remake in 2017. Amazing how Xenoblade 3 and Xenoblade games in general managed to become classics and favourites is such a short time.

I am definitely going to consider playing Final Fantasy VI, Suikoden II (i might wait for remaster), Radiant Historia, Lufia II, and Dragon Quest 3 (might wait for that remake too). Sometimes remasters and remakes take things out and censor stuff.... so i might wait on reviews on whether i play the original or not for those two games.

Mine was like breath of fire 4 and xenogears though it was rush from disc2 onwards but still is one of the best. Ff6 or ff9 both are a match. Genso suikoden from psp is also good. God a remake of this games for ps4 or ps5/switch would be insane. The list are really good aswell

DQ3, DQ 11, Chrono Trigger, FF 6, Golden Sun 1 and 2, so many options for 10/10. The Octopath Traveler offerings come close, especially 2 but I still say 9.5/10 on those. Maybe I will give 2 10/10 when I complete it. We will have to see. Oh, I can't forget to do the like thing. Simple man and all that. 😁 Hope your day is great brother.

I'd definitely add Valkyrie Profile 1 or 2. They're both really good in their own way, but also have some odd design choices, so I can't really decide which one is better. Possibly also either of the Nier games. Not really sure if they count as JRPGs though.

Indont find any game perfect but ine tbst i can agree with is Perfect Chronologically. I tried thr DS version vut in petty and hate reading cause the game can be PRETTY dilogue heavy at times (on occasion to a fault...) bhr the voice acting does si much to alleviate the problem and everyone does such an amazing job. Thr combat js also just the most satisfying turn based combat I've ever played. Lining up all your enemies into a single set of trials before releasing your all out attack skills and spells is super satisfying and almost never gets old. There are no BAD characters just some you prefer more than others (like I never got too into Aht's trap setting skills bht thats cause I was still figuring out positioning) and everyone is viable. And the new content they added was pretty good too. Yeah jt has DLC but that wasn't THAT bad...just kinda eh. The only real knock is that if you wanna get the true ending you gotta go through new game plus....and whike this game isn't HORRIBLY long it stjll takes a bit to get back. Otherwise still the best 3DS jrpg. Irs good stuff. Also I like the new art style over the original and anyone who disagrees is wrong (well to me anyway....)

I definitely have gripes with Xenoblade 3. Normal is too easy, Hard is too tedious. I played up to chapter 6 on hard and I was burned out. The AI is bad and bosses are just HP sponges. I never had to grind or change my strategy to clear a boss fight, just micromanage the healing to keep the AI from causing a wipe. Without grinding or using any bonus exp my level got too high making it harder to inherit and raise new classes. I hope the last expansion or next installment cleans some of this up.

Not necessarily a 10/10 but Ar Tonelico was straight fire and worthy of mentioning. Especially Ar Tonelico 2 with its refined combat from the original which is very unique and unlike any RPG to this day. Another personal fav of mine is Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria.

A lovely list, although the absence of Trails pains me a bit. =p Some of my 10/10 JRPGs are Trails in the Sky SC (What a surprise!), Trails from Zero, the Golden Sun + Lost Age, Persona 5 Royal (sorry not sorry), Pokemon Black 2/White 2, FF6 and DQ11. I'm sure there are more... I do love my gaming! But the only RPG series I really grew up with at all were Pokemon, Mario RPGs, Golden Sun and Fire Emblem. I don't quite have the nostalgia for many of these older series like others do. But RPG is still my favorite genre! I still need to play some of the games on your list.

I have a question about xenoblade chronicles. I know that people love the 1st and 2nd, but most agree the third is the best. I have no knowledge of any of the 3 games beyond the general idea and all the love they receive. Is it worth it to play them in order since if 3 is the best and I love the series it would feel like a step backwards to play 3 first then go back to 1 or 2? I have the same question about Shin Megami Tensei honestly because these are two of the really big JRPG series that I missed the boat on. I'm just breaking into Disgaea as well with 5 since it was on sale on the eshop.

Wow such a good list, pure nostalgic! But if i have to go for a ranking my top one would be Golden Sun II and my number two is Tales of Phantasia, but nobody knows this masterpiece of a GBA Game and on the third place Final Fantasy 6. Does anybody knows Tales of Phantasia?!?!? :D

Love Lunar SSSC. I like it slight over Lunar EBC even though I recognized it's more of a epic adventure. Wish we got more proper Lunar games. Dragon song had a interesting idea of a evil Dragonmaster from Vile but the execution was horrible. If I had the money and time. I would remake the game. I mean overhaul in story and gameplay. After fixing that mess, I would love to do a prequel that was shown from Lunar SSH. Lunar: The Dark Princes of the Black Star would be a good title. Would love to know more about Eiphel. Who are the Dark Princes of the Black Star? So much lore that has been only scratched, I want more 😭. Sorry for the rambling.

Xenoblade is perfection. personally think Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive eddition is the best of the series, but 3 was definitely excellent. and obvioulsy Chrono Trigger is #1. it is the only game i give a 10/10 to.

I agree with the rating of every game of your list I played myself. Haven't tried Xenoblade 3 yet as well as Lunar although I bought it as American import in the early 00s ( I literally sent the guy dollar notes in a letter ). Opened it but never played it. I guess I could sell the two games for a lot as they are like new with everything still there.

I am on board, and agree with 99% of your list. However, the psx lunar games are so gutted compared to the sega cd versions! Sure you have to grind and it takes a lot longer because of the encounter rate and such, its so much more in depth and enthralling. There was so much removed to streamline it for the psx and the newer generation gamer, it just felt wrong to me after playing the sega cd version first.

Yup, Lufia II is still a tie for my favorite game of all time to this day. The memorable characters, music, and story have stayed with me to this day. It may be time for another playthrough. :)

Started Chrono Trigger this week and I have to agree that the enemy encouters are so well done. Attacking an enemy so that he can kill the more annoying one for you or beating the enemies in specific order so that they can't be used as a counter. Xenoblade Chronicles, Trails in the Sky SC, Ys 8: Lacrimosa of Dana, Tales of Berseria, FFIV, FFVI, FFVII, FFX, Radiant Historia: Perfect Chronology, Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, The Witch and the Hundred Knight, Nier Replicant, Lost Odyssey and Bravely Default would be 10/10 games for me.

Final Fantasy 6 would be the first thing to come to my mind when i think of a 10/10 rpg, it really feels like a culmination of the genre and pushed the boundaries and fully holds up to this day

It's my favorite game of all time. I think objectively that FFIX is the best one, but 6 has special significance for me. FF6 came out when I was 11 years old and I distinctly remember the hype my brother and our friends had leading up to it's release. We loved the first two Final Fantasy games we got in America, and the series was on an upwards trajectory after FF2 (actually FFIV) pushed the boundaries of storytelling in video games. My brother and I saved up money we had earned mowing lawns and doing household chores to split the cost of the new Final Fantasy 3 (actually FFVI) cartridge. We were so psyched when we got it and it absolutely delivered on all the hype that was built up around it. Each of us had a save file and we would watch the other play, take turns, and stay up to the wee hours of the night talking about our favorite parts, or strategies for character builds with different Espers and relic combinations. These are cherished memories for me that I still think about whenever the topic of Final Fantasy VI comes up. My brother died from an overdose in 2000. We had grown apart by then, but it still devastated our family. This is why Final Fantasy VI has special meaning to me. The game is by no means perfect, but for the time it was the best RPG on any gaming console. I used to play through it once a year in memory of my brother, but haven't kept up with it for the last several years. I'm glad that other people enjoy it as much as I/we did though. I hope that it's a game that will still be discussed well into the future as one of the landmark titles in the history of Japanese Role-playing Games.

@@karlo9572 Nah. The world of ruin is intentionally like that. There was a lot of criticism towards JRPGs and their linearity at the time. The World of Ruin was an early experiment in open world RPG design. After the first few hours you get the airship and are free to do whatever you want. Nowadays open world games are a dime a dozen, but in 94 this was a novel concept for a JRPG.

Etrian Odyssey 4 is one of the few games in recent memory I would consider giving a 10/10. Great graphics for 3ds, fantastic music, engaging exploration and skill tree system, and challenging, rewarding combat. Really glad I got this game before the 3ds eshop closed down. I strongly recommend to play this if anyone is reasonably able to.

@Fabrício -_- No. This is the first game in the series I played. The games are not in a connected universe as far as I know. The story is not really the selling point. This is also considered to be more accessible compared to previous entries. Overall, you are absolutely more than fine starting here. Seems like you could also play 5 first if you want, but I had a fantastic time with 4. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. 😃

Shadow Hearts will always be a 10/10 for me. Nothing quite like the unique, dreary story and atmosphere there. Coupler with the judgment ring system, it is literal perfection
