Used to Corner Marshal at Race City in Calgary, Alberta. The American Indycar Series came up a few years. These are Indy cars that have been retired from the series and private racers buy them up. Some are wealthy guys that like to race and some were using it as a stepping stone to get into the Indycar Series. The cars that had the expensive Ilmor and Cosworth engines originally, had them removed and were fitted with aluminium block Chev or Ford engines. There was one with the Buick turbo Indy Engine. For practice Saturday morning one year it rained overnight. The back straight did a 210° left and then a right 30° onto the dragstrip/main straight. That traction compound works good when dry but damp from the rain it was like grease. First driver out came around and eased into the throttle as still warming up. Did a 360 into the Armco. That killed morning practice for those guys. Club racers with less power were warned and did not have an issue. Calgary is a horse race, chuckwagon and auto drag race town, so could not get spectators out to watch them run. Track was in a great place where you could see the Calgary skyline and the Rocky Mountains about 70 miles away.

Richmond gears were the worst years ago (I don't know about now). They were very noisy and the gears were very rough. I did not recommend them to anyone. I polished gears different than what they showed here. We used Walnut shell media, and it took a long time to get a somewhat smooth finish. Doing them by hand took forever. As time goes by, there is always a better way of doing things, though usually more expensive. More good information from David.

It would be interesting to see a rundown on what coatings/aftertreatment processes are best used on what parts. There's a new one that I just learned about for piston skirts that is a "self clearancing" coating from Lin2line meant to stabilize the piston in the bore which is supposed to have the effect of helping the piston rings do their job better. This idea has been used in the aerospace industry for a while to increase compressor efficiency. Steve Morris has used it in his own engine. I know that doesn't mean anything, but I found it interesting.

18% wheel torque gain makes me think the "new" traction issues may only be partially down to track prep, but the fact it went 8.32 on a "street" surface with the new gear sort of points to it being an anti-traction prep compound. Hey, at least nobody broke drivetrain components! The huge drop in diff temp basically proves the finishing is worthwhile, though it's likely to remain one of the "last places" for the performance-minded to look when starting from a regular production vehicle just due to cost vs benefit. 5whp is 5whp, but 5whp has many inexpensive ways to be made before the (relatively) costly ones start to make sense.
@ericschumacher51896 ай бұрын
WPC-Treatment is also a good way to reduce friction & increase durability....some higher end ring & pinion sets are first REM-finished (like seen in the video) then afterwards WPC-treated.....this dramatically shortens the break in process and keeps more consistent lash over its life.

I'd like to hear David Vizard giver his evaluation into the never ending flat tappet failures we keep hearing about.
@JeffKopis6 ай бұрын
I know that some cam grinders, like Delta Cams in Tacoma, WA, can resurface original OEM lifters, restoring the crown to as new. The 40-60 year old OEM lifters were made in America from a higher grade of iron. I would certainly choose reground OEM lifters over the junk they sell now!
@JeffKopis6 ай бұрын
Also, David did a video a while back about his endorsed oil additive called Oil Extreme, which he says works BETTER than zinc for breaking in flat tappets. Look for that video.
@andretorben99956 ай бұрын
@@JeffKopisI think the oil issue has been debunked with many people using zinc additives, different oils, additives and so on but we are still seeing failures. Furthermore flat tappets were not failing like this 30 years ago and everyone agrees oils have increased lubricity these days. So it doesnt appear to be oil related. Powell machine has a series of videos in which they test the hardness and profile of both lifters and cam lobes and there is nothing conclusive. Yes some lifters are poorly made and finished but there is not a direct correlation. Even lifters with EDM oiling directly to the face which should have lots of lubrication present are failing. Seems there are still lots of theories but still nothing conclusive ??? Very odd problem.
@mikewillett50766 ай бұрын
@@JeffKopis. Several brands of lifters, even cheapies were Rockwell tested. They were all hard enough to live. It's not having the right crown on the lifters during manufacturing, and the finish on the lifters and cam lobes not being right.

They make a lapping compound that is used in industrial gearboxes for break in. Supposedly the compound wears out so you run it drain it and refill it and are good to go. Perhaps a cheaper and easier option for what was done here.

David, I remember an article in Hot Rod about 25-30 years ago, about a (similar, I believe) micropolishing service, called Micronite. They did all manner of gears, as well as cams and flat tappets. I know the finishes were SMOOTHER, but I dont recall if they were HARDER (as nitriding or hard chroming does). Also, Eagle has a surface finish called ESP for their cranks, which supposedly reduces friction. Do you have any info about that?

These gear parts where walnut blasted? Bacci in Italy, don't they make the best gearbox parts for a Ford as well? Tires in the rain: at least Intermediates. A soft compound with grooves that is. But the rules on a strip could be different. Add a PTFA or similar additive to the engine and gearbox. It would help lowering friction. (...need to say: in the engine is actually not my favorite)

I was wondering if you would test out lightweight brake rotors since your doing mods for this mustang to make it faster in the 1/4 mile. I'm sure you know this but purchasing a set of 2 piece lightweight brake rotors from Baer Eradispeed or any other reputable brands like Wilwood or Girodisc will reduce rotating mass by as much as little as 30 pounds to as much as 40 pounds depending on what size brakes the Ecoboost mustang came with, which should easily chop off another 10th or a little more in the 1/4 mile and will look killer behind those lightweight wheels too.

David. Have you thought of using a thinner oil in the differential? We have seen over the years that many manual transmissions have used a thinner oil successfully. If there is an oil that can handle the load requirements (similar specs for a manual transmission). Then this would take less horsepower to turn. Your thoughts would be appreciated.
