Join me as I uncover the secrets behind Super Smash Bros. Melee's insane 100% speedrun category, All Trophies. We'll hear from the category runners, ncb1221, bwells626, and aMSa as they share their experiences from the past several years of running the category.
To solve the mysteries behind this run, we'll examine the category's requirements, dissect the best route, and learn how to shave off time from the runners' best practices. At the end, the current world record holder will share their most clutch moments.

If watching Summoning Salt's taught me anything, it's this; No run is exempt from being refined to incredible degrees. In time, I'm sure we'll learn new ways to tackle the coins process, the overall play of the game, tech to make things go faster, etc. The category's still so young, and has a LOT of room to grow. It's an intimidating category, but one I'd love to see grow over time. Can't wait to see how this one develops! Good job, and great video!

I'm somewhat surprised Melee's "You got all trophies" message and Diskun unlock requirements work as intended, considering the facts that there are actually 293 trophies in Melee (including "Samus Unmasked", "Mario & Yoshi", and "Tamagon"), and there are actually 256 bonuses in the game, with the other seven being unused (those being "Barrel Blast KO", "Crash & Burn", "Deflector", "Green Shell Shooter", "Poolshark", "Red Shell Shooter" and "Ricochet Rifler"), at least according to TCRF.

One thing I would know for a TAS run: when you create a new save, the game gives you a free (lottery) trophy. For the TAS, the free trophy that would be most beneficial is Birdo, to instantly get Mushroom Kingdom II.

This is a well-constructed video about the All Trophies category and its speedrun story on that site. A lot of the rules and sorting out of this category that happened this year were addressed when I first added it in 2019, but the category format didn't have them on the website then due to the lack of people playing. We weren't sure about the best way to do some things until more people submitted and couldn't do some of the plans either when there were only one or two people that had submitted. It is good that this category's leaderboard was improved, and more people will hopefully try to complete them with the better leaderboard and advancements in knowing how to play the category informatively. I'm glad to see that aMSa got a submission that could be approved! It was sad when his first speedrun had to be rejected due to the incomplete video problem; I didn't like having to do that. Your 1st place record is also great! A TAS of this speedrun category would be fun. There are likely a lot of people that already worked on this speedrun in the past because that website only has a pretty small amount of Melee 1P competition/data out of all of its online data and offline history.

Incredible video. One thought-I know the 15 minute melee part with master hand is meant to be a break point of the run, but wouldn’t it be most optimal to grind coins during this part of the run? Dash dance with master hand for the 15 minutes would, theoretically, save 15 minutes. I know losing the break sucks, but thems the facts
@davidvkimball

That is exactly right. I intended on spending half of it taking a break and the other half grinding, but I accidentally started it as 1P instead of 3P, which would have meant my inputs didn't count. So I just took a full break haha.

@@davidvkimball The worst part about it was, this was when you had to actually look hard to find out what to even do to get to that point. Oldschool melee could be brutal.

When we were waiting the first time for Mewtwo, the internet was young, and my friends and I weren't entirely sure we weren't being trolled. We knew mewtwo existed in the game, we just thought the unlock method was bullshit. When we finally waited out the time, and ended the match, we were so excited we almost lost the match. We won, then the infamous disc read error occurred.

I wonder what the most efficient strategy for the lottery is. I suspect "round up to ~90%" is a pleasant safe strat but it probably isn't the best usage of coins. Also, can someone more familiar with Melee's RNG mechanics tell me whether doing RNG manipulation would be viable for the lottery here.
@davidvkimball
@davidvkimball 2 жыл бұрын
Great question. SaveState is like the authority on RNG manip in Melee, and Fuzzyness knows a bit about it also. I watched a video covering it. There is a seed for Melee, so nothing is truly "random." It's probably possible to get on a cycle where you get the perfect number of trophies (with maybe a "name entry" or "random character select" thrown in there to change the seed.
@PracticalTAS
@PracticalTAS 2 жыл бұрын
It's certainly possibly to manipulate the RNG. A TAS could even brute force with a strategy like "make a savestate, play the lottery, if you don't get a new trophy reload and increase the price by 1 before playing again, repeat" and probably collect every lottery trophy with a lot of coins to spare. To be efficient and even do this in real time you'd have to figure out the relationship between coins spent and the trophy you eventually receive, reverse engineer the function that converts RNG seed to trophy, and calculate your current RNG seed at a given time (the last of which we know how to do).

This was so well done! I hope you may garner some interest in maybe considering a video on the history of Brawl's All Challenges, as it is very similar to Melee's All Trophies with the few players that dared to try it out, funny miscalculations, accidental hour-saving discoveries, friendly competition, and more. RubberDuckyAssassin, the WR holder, is actually preparing to do his final run of All Challenges (and Brawl in general) very shortly. If anyone could honor his legacy for All Challenges and Brawl in general in video format, you'd be the guy, if this possibly interests you.

Yeah and some funny mishabs like Dragolina doing all challenges and hosting a charity event and you not accepting her run because there were a few internet issues on cruel brawl in a 43 hour run instead of just adding a penalty time or something because the 4k Views and 525 euros donated to charity were cleary not an indication for it being done and being seen. So quirky of you. Or the legacy of brawl that is built upon the pedo almolicious that you praised to such a high regard as a community and have seen as the great grandfather of the game until the game got a bit of attention and later too through the history video where everything had to be skipped that involved him, because that would make the game look bad. But who could forget the time where ducky too did allegedly something in a certain hotel room but stayed admin on the smash discord anyway when it was still up for debate. You know out of everything (and that is by far not all) that leaked out of your speedrunning community, i am truly wondering why nobody wants to run it even after getting so much mainstream attention by dragolina and i am really wondering why she even put so much time into this unholy abomination of a speedrunning community. There should rather be a video of the legacy of brawl and where it went horrible every single time.
