I built this same IKEA Hobo Stove about 3 Years ago from an IKEA utensils caddy that I found at the Goodwill store for $3. It’s just a highly perforated stainless steel can meant to be used in dishwashers. It’s been such a great stove that I wanted to build another. I couldn’t find another exactly like the first one, but it’s close. They're both 5.3” tall by 5.1” in diameter. I found it on Amazon for $12. Just Google, Amazon IKEA utensils caddy. You would think that a lot of embers would just fall right out of all those holes and set the woods on fire, but surprisingly, not so much. Still though, you’ll only want to use this stove in controlled environments. It makes a great receptacle for fire making practice and the burning tinder bundles produced. Great idea. I've been wanting to make something like this for my field bag. My dad built a larger version out of a drum from an old washing machine and it works great.

I built my personal one from Walmart's version that is taller than the IKEA version. This way i could cut a feed hole, bolted on a curled piece of flashing for a windscreen, and then use tent pegs so i can sit my Stanley cup on it and cook/boil. It sits down in the strainer this way and is sheltered from wind to speed up boil time. And with the addition of two more tent pegs, i can suspend a Trangia burner or plate for solid/gel fuel. Great thing is it all fits/nests together for carrying in my haversack

Thank you for demonstrating this. It will be a fun project with my little one. I’m going to add castle nuts forced onto those “boogered” bolt threads to lock them in place to provide a bit more base contact area. Edit: Oops, I mean serrated flange nuts.

👍👍👍 .. nice. I've made more than a couple of IKEA Hobo Stoves over the years .. my kids have got one each of those. What I like about them is their durability and corrosion resistance. Those who complain about 'too many holes' .. a section of tin can cut to size, 'tactically holed' and used as an internal windscreen works just fine. Thanks for sharing, David .. take care ..

Love my Ikea stoves! There are two different sizes. I made legs from 1-sided conduit clamps paired with small wing nuts on the bottom outside, washers, and then spade bolts inside. I don't like the flashy color of the conduit clamps so I used flat black grill spray paint. These leg setups are nice because they can be rotated out and tightened back up so they make a nice stable platform. Inside the stove a piece of mesh can be cut to sit on the spade bolt heads and that allows air flow or is a nice stable platform for my Trangia alcohol stove or cat can stove. Next I get a pair (or two) of cheap camping stakes from walmart and shorten them and slightly bend the tips and use them to insert at any level in the stove to raise that screen or second mesh or just the trangia to any height I want and/or use a cup that will fit inside the stove at the right level for my alcohol stove to be used and have sort of a wind screen by using the stove. When I use the stove for twigs I made a grate for the top by using a stainless ruler cut in half and then by making groves on the sides and then a single groove halfway down the center of the two pieces I cut to they can interlock and it makes a nice grate to put pots on on top of the stove and just fits inside the stove for storing. Additionally a computer fan cover can be used with its screw mounts can be bent over to make a "grate" at the top and keep it there. Lastly, Walmart had little red bags in the camping section that fit the stove perfectly and allowed me to pack with some fat wood, BIC lighter, and a cat-can alcohol stove I made and a small bottle of fuel and keep sut out of my pack. This setup is extremely versatile and not too heavy. I would like to find a canister stove burner with the canister seperate from the stove that I could secure in there as well. I did cut outs for wood twigs on the side of the stove but I am not sure they are needed, and in particular if you use a stainless ruler grate. There is enough room to add twigs under the pot. If you do cut feeding holes you can cut them so you can put longer pieces of wood in the stove with it sticking out.

Just running with the theme, Dollar tree has some expanded metal baskets in various sizes that look to be worth tinkering with. One of them is small wastebasket size and another is pencil jar size. Possibly the larger one could be used as a safety basket and spark arrester.

Nice job but the legs are completely unnecessary. The fire gets enough side draft. I say this because I have built one with 4 pieces of metal coat hanger as a grid in the top to hold my canteen cup. I have boiled water in under 7 minutes from lighting using pine twigs no bigger than finder diameter. I have it in a pack in case I'm stranded or an even worse scenario arises.
