Choose any wood that's highly degraded, dry, and big enough to whittle out an 8" spindle by 3/4" diameter and a fireboard that's at least 1" wide and at least 3/8" thick. With your knife straighten all sides. I like to square the spindle as I whittle it down to 3/4" because I can sight down the straight lines to keep everything symmetrical. From there, it's easy to take it to round then whittle the ends. See how simple and easy it is to make a fireboard is also. Please follow the LINKS below and SUBSCRIBE. Thank You! Thank you for being such an amazing teacher. Your videos are very easy to follow and clear. While I'm working as a professional picture framer and not watching all the time but have your videos on in front of me, I still learn just by listening.

I like the fact you used a Mora Knive to split your board. I know that most outdoor channels use a heavy blade but I don't think that it is necessary for small splitting. Great video. You are a firebug and I love that fact that you teach fire making.

good morning and thank you for a nice video. I am always inspired by your easy way of teaching and I never tire of seeing you make a fire while making it look so simple . a basic survival skill we should all learn multiple ways to do, the most important tool we can ever have is a trained mind to deal with whatever life will through our way. have a Happy Thanksgiving Dave

David, I have adopted your technique of squaring up my spindle piece before rounding it, also I follow your guidelines for putting the pointed end and creating the bullnose hot end. I wonder if you have ever used an axe or Hatchet to do at least the initial roughing out work? I think the Hatchet really helps to square up the piece of wood before whittling with my knife.

My understanding of what you said about the tulip poplar is that wit applying too much downward pressure it would be easy to drill through the fireboard. That said, would you consider T P one of those woods that will glaze over easily using too little pressure on the spindle?
@DavidWestBgood2ppl3 жыл бұрын
You missed a short part of what I said in that glazing video. I said, you shouldn't use heavy downward pressure on all woods and TP is one of those woods.

We seem to have mIssed out on everything after the spindle and the basic fireboard, including making the notch in the fireboard bow, the bow string, and the pivot block. Take two?
