each will become favorite at time of understanding and proficiency... my sifu says tai chi is slow motion kung fu basics, I agree... especially like the generation of power through relaxed body movement combined with breath control... key is posture and footwork.. very good lessons Sir! thank you

I've never practiced martial arts. I was never taught tai chi but when I was young I began to mimic the movements as an expression of fluidity of movement and for physical fitness. Amazing how it can become explosive in a combat scenario. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

This is what I want to work up to. I am 71, feel 40 but can tell my body is declining in strength and balance. So I am learning Tai Chi so I get the moves into my muscle memory. Then I want to graduate to self defense moves like you are doing here, so I have written down your info. to take your course later. You have excellent teaching skills for an old folk like me. Thank you!

I love that you are actually showing the true uses for the moves :) the way your deflecting the arm in your brush knee technique is very much like the way that leung jan taught chi sao in the 88 point gulao wing chun system. your application sings a mixture of taiji and wing chun I love it.

Consider that your teacher may have determined that you were not ready to learn these things. And, if you are ready, the application will be obvious. Not sure you really learned "the moves in the form".

It would be really interesting to see you try these moves against a non-compliant aggressor with totally different martial assumptions from you who was actually trying to take your head off in real time. From my experience, it looks very different from this.

A well-rounded trained fighter could pull off these techniques. A non-trained fighter could not. In other words, only someone who is pressure tested against other well rounded fighters could handle the speed and timing.

Care to volunteer yourself as a non-compliant aggressor, Barnaby?
@elizajames477
@elizajames477 2 жыл бұрын
'non compliant agressor' is a term that sports fighters like to band around. Most 'soft' martial arts are looking for openings where the opponent is overstretched or poorly balanced. So a kid with 4 years experience finds it difficult to read these things, and strength and stamina are much easier to apply. However, if you're good at reading balance from years and years of good training, the point is that you are only applying force in the direction where they are weak. Yep, this sounds theoretical, but I've done it practically.. like in a club when someone went to shove me and I moved my body and left my foot there, so he fell onto floor. I'm not saying we shouldn't learn to strike hard and to train to be strong and fit.. just that many people that rely simply kn strength tire faster, elevate the aggression in fights, and get tangled up when there's more than one attacker. Basically, you want to use all possible attributes that are available to you.

These are such tiresome and tired old arguments raised again and again against every martial art except so- called 'MMA'. I've watched a few so -called 'MMA' competitions and they're just bludgeoning matches with zero skills involved. Go away and troll somewhere else.

Very interesting. As a karate practitioner of almost 40 years ( 7th Dan ShotokanI also study Tai Chi, originally Yang but now Chen) I see a lot of similarities. Sadly many karate ka tend to use too much tension and have lost the meanings of the kata. Several of your techniques here are similar to moves I teach from kata, with the same applications, and I always stress the need to be relaxed. Have subscribed 👍

You should really learn Taiji then. I have two slipped discs in my back, and they caused me a lot of chronic pain. I started doing Taiji 20 years ago, and after a couple of months my chronic pain disappeared along with a chronic tendinitis. As long as I keep doing Taiji daily and take care not to lift wrong or too heavily I have no back problems.

I can see very clearly you understand the martial arts principles and you use your entire body and the correct way to neutralize their strength and aggression. Excellent instruction and I highly recommend you. Most martial artists really don't have a clue and in my option they can learn the dance but teach carp for realistic applications that would really work. Thank you.

Interesting...I must have misunderstood what my Sifu --Yang style, and Dai Sifu --Wu style, taught and my study of Chen Man-Ch'ing's writings continuously reminded me: the initiation for movement is reading the intent of the opponent and my movement begins at the feet. I'll work more on my base and movement. Thank you for your video's push.
