Really loved all these videos and I wish there were even more ports for you to dig your hands (paws?) into. I guess the Doom 2 port on the GBA! Some more notes: the Doom 1 on the GBA also has a ton of cut textures and sprites that depicted gore. Doom 2 continued this trend, but to a somewhat lesser extent. And since that one came out in 2002, the Collector's Edition was NOT the first time the Icon of Sin was seen on a console. But what a ride, great work!

Doom 64 is fascinating to me and has become particularly iconic to me in that while I really don't like to *play* it, the vibe it has is so intense and distinct. Like, it feels a lot like a proper horror game, and some of the traps are cruel like a horror game, but the action doesn't *play* like a horror game.

I was hoping you'd mention the XBLA/PSN ports from the late '00s as they had quite a few quirks of their own: - First official console ports to support online multiplayer - Music was played through Gravis Ultra Sound patches so it sounds different (and was four beats slow like the Xbox port) - First appearance of "No Rest for the Living" episode in Doom 2 - Doom 2 med kits have red pills instead of crosses - No cheats at all I think they would fit your own reasoning of being different enough from the original to warrant a mention. Plus, the only ways to obtain them now are by pirating, or through the Doom 3 BFG Edition (which itself is delisted from online stores and isn't sold new anymore)
@cannedbeverage76879 ай бұрын
The PSN version specifically was the first and only time the Master Levels were officially compiled into an episode. You don't get that in the BFG Edition. As for why he didn't put it here, probably because it's a souped up version of the Xbox port, with many of the same problems (but not all thankfully) and minor improvements. Later the id Tech 4 shell was stripped out in favor of Unity which is where the current bloated modern port comes from (both games with all addons are more than a gigabyte, which is a big deal on phones).
@DeafeningCha9 ай бұрын
@@cannedbeverage7687I didn't mention the Master Levels. No Rest for the Living was specifically developed for the Xbox 360 port of Doom 2. Technically it isn't an episode, but a set of 9 new levels that can be selected separately from the main campaign. It definitely appears on the BFG Edition. It's not because they were too similar to the Xbox port, otherwise the 32X and 3DO versions wouldn't have been mentioned because they're just better/worse ports of the Jaguar code base. He said it's because ports after Xbox are too similar to the PC versions, which I think is incorrect as the Xbox port was more accurate to the original than the XBLA/PSN ports, all things considered. Perhaps he didn't want to have to track down a BFG disc or use emulators, which I understand.
@cannedbeverage76879 ай бұрын
@@DeafeningCha I mostly just wrote that comment so if someone who doesn't know about the port gets to know more about it. I know you didn't mention the Master Levels, I only wrote because it's unique to the PSN version (that kinda makes it special or something). Doom Classic (the name of thing) was based off the Xbox port, Vicarious Visions worked on both, with Nerve Software joining along for the X360 and continuing to work on the game till this day with the Unity version. 32X and 3DO ports however were made by totally different developers and have nothing in common apart from the Jaguar base. That's the difference between this pair and Xbox + X360.

Surprisingly, the most impactful part of this video to me is the last 90 seconds: not because the rest isn't interesting but I'm pretty familiar with what was done for Doom 64 (it being standalone appreciated) and the infamous Xbox levels being mocked about till this day. Seeing the enormous list at 20:12 made me appreciate the huge community this game still has, and the fact that the >original< FPS benchmark is somehow still relevant after its 30-year anniversary. Evident is the notorious wad released last year that was not so subtlety referenced to in this video (and yes, that Running From Evil DOES sound weird) and all the derivatives of it, almost creating a new genre as is. Thanks for going through these David, quite a bit was actually not new but still presented with a good sense of humor (Auntiechrist ffs 😂) and fast but eligible pace.

I wonder if it was because it had that particular name and people took it to mean "another port of Doom, this time on the N64", and by that point the PS1 port (and also to an extent the Saturn port) was already out. Perhaps if it had a different name, it might have performed better - heck, the developers already put in their own graphics for D64, they could have even made the enemies look completely original and instead made the game its own original thing a-là Strife or any other total conversion/megawad out there.

Doom GBA's music has always fascinated me, with it's slightly odd truncated remixes of the classic themes. Will also mention that they're in the correct order in game, just most them play a level early; they are then correct from Pandemonium onwards, due to Slough of Despair being absent from that port. At Doom's Gate plays in the secret level for some reason, while Hiding The Secrets is apparently present in memory, but goes unused

Great vid. You didn't talk about the Doom II port to GBA, though, which was even better than the Doom port. It had all the maps, all the enemies and items, and other than still being based on Jaguar and thus having some simplified geometry, is a very good and underrated port. However, it did have a strange issue with armor values effectively resetting each map.

Also, in the Xbox version of Doom 3. If you play Ultimate Doom, regardless of episode. The skybox will always have those grassy Chinese mountains found in episode 1, which is a bug. However, Activision reviewed those criticisms and said it's not a bug, claiming that Doom takes place entirely on Mars, which is false, because episode 1 takes place in the Martian moon of Phobos. Episode 2 takes place in Phobos's brother Deimos, which has been conquered by hell spawn and it was hovering above Hell. Episode 3 takes place in, you guessed it, Hell. And the last official episode, episode 4 takes place in a different level of Hell or rather purgatory.

Doom 64 really does lend itself to having a Doom 2.5 pseudo title, truly meaning it's fair to say we have three classic and three modern Doom entries, and that AUNTY-Christ joke was freaking hilarious. Also the GBA version is a staggering achievement from a time where GBA ports could be a coin flip between impressive or embarassing. But the Doom 3 (and BFG) version was the first copy I owned for myself after I left high school, so it's wild that the end of this flow chart is where I myself owned a copy that wasn't on the family computer.

Having seen all those, I'd say the PSX and N64 games are the most interesting, and the SNES and GBA the most surprising technically (despite the flaws). It's sad in a way to indeed think that nowadays, despite some folks still thinking the console wars is not finished, it is : the hardwares are close enough to be similar to slightly differently specced PC... so the hardware no longer matters much. And the two recent Doom games are very similar on consoles and PC, except the lack of mouse on the console ports :p

The proper way to play Doom64 is with Turok or Goldeneye controls. The analog stick (left hand) is for looking around, Z is for shooting. The C buttons (right hand) are for movement and strafing. A and B are for cycling weapons. N64 used left hand for looking and right hand for moving. This is different from PS1 and PC which typically use the left hand for moving and the right hand for looking. Neither way is better. Both setups work really well once you get a feel for it.

One interesting quirk of the Original Xbox port of Classic DOOM was it's framerate Original PC versions were designed to run at 35fps (Since CRT monitors back then used to run at 70Hz) However the Xbox port forces a 30fps limiter (TVs ran at 60Hz) on the game and hence feels jittery as the game tries to render at 35fps but is forced to wait 1/30th sec intervals instead of 1/35th sec ones (SOURCE: DF Retro: Doom - Every Console Port Tested and Analysed! by Digital Foundry) Also interesting with the xbox port is that you can actually give input to the game while the level is "loading" (what I mean is the loading melt screen). On the PC version, your input is locked out till the screen melt loading is finished. However on the xbox port since this lockout is absent, you can actually move, shoot, etc. which can lead to a jarring start where the game renderer skips to show the current state. Doom 64 allows you to remap buttons to what you want but unfortunately you cannot disable Y-axis movement on the stick, which makes Hectic annoying.

Doom 64: Man calling this a port is almost disingenuous and a misnomer. Yeah the gameplay is the same but the mapset and graphics are entirely different, it has a new plot set after the originals and adds the rather phenomenal-when-powered up Unmaker. Honestly even with the horror atmosphere I love it like the rest. Its a shame the game's name told everyone it was yet another port instead of a massively new experience. If it was allowed to be called "The Absolution" it would have fared a bit better. I'm so glad Id and Nightdive modernized it, freed it from that ungodly N64 controller and brought it to PC officially along with current gen systems. And ESPECIALLY massive props to Samuel "Kaiser" Villarreal for basically porting it to PC THREE times. Okay that TC thing was weird but 64 EX was fantastic and the remastered version proves he still knows what he's doing, and he's the man to go to for remastered FPS games. Go get the PowerSlave remaster its lovely. Still wish he'd have officially ported his old Outcast mapset from the Absolution TC to the remaster tho. Also, "Auntie"-Christ, BEAUTIFUL. GBA: My resentment for this port is large and painful. Imagine liking Doom on an old PC inherited from your sister and wanting it on your bright new shiny GBA that your parents got you for christmas. That's me. Imagine reading that Doom was on GBA and being mega excited. Oh hell yeah, awesome shooter being brought to my GBA, fuck yes! Now imagine you finally get it and its just the fucking Jaguar mapset right down to ending with Fortress of Mystery (renamed to "Dis" because fuck you), the "Tower of Babel" is just that Hell Gat elevel undoing all the good the PSX port did and there's no cyberdemon to fight. Or at all in that version. Or the Spider-Mind. And the music is played on the wrong levels and sounds pretty bad. Hell the GBA can take the original PC port if effort is put into it, there's a romhack that proves it. I heard Carmack stepped in and made David A Palmer base it of fof the Jaguar instead of their own engine proving Carmack ain't quite the perfection Civvie thought he was. Has Carmack apologized for GBA Doom yet? Look I'm sorry I sound so fucking salty but it still hurts. GBA Doom 2 was pretty ambitious and fun tho. And Switch Doom's made the GBA port irrelevant. Xbox: Never tried this one but I've watched videos on it by a variety of guys. So glad that by this point consoles finally started getting the PC version as close as possible even if it had its own problems. I bet in 2003 an Xbox and Collector's Edition Doom 3 woulda been a godsend. Those two exclusive secret levels, "Sewers" and "Betray" were kinda shit tho. Fucking up the skybox and claiming the entire game is on Mars is also a sadly typical Activision dumbass move too.

Believe it or not, Doom 64 was the first Doom game I played. I rented it from my local video rental store initially thinking it was a port and young me wanted to see why Doom is so loved. Color me surprised when I began playing and it wasn’t what I had heard about in all the magazines or Internet forums posts, but I still fell in love with its atmosphere, fun weapon selection, and monsters with memorable designs. Fact it’s now considered part of the same canon with Doom 2016 and Eternal has me quite happy, seeing an old favorite still being recognized by the devs. I actually still have my Doom 64 cartridge too, bought it from that same rental store when they were going out of business in the mid 00s.
