Can a Game Composer Figure SILKSONG Out from the Music Alone?

Hollow Knight Silksong is one of the most anticipated games currently. Can we guess anything about Silksong based on the music alone? This video is my attempt at that. We're gonna listen to Lace and Bonebottom, the two currently available music samples. One thing I can tell for sure, the SIlksong OST will be great.

Great analysis as always! I found really interesting how you described the Bonebottom theme as comfy, since my first impression was that it's kinda melancholic/depressing. Also, fun fact about the Silksong OST: thanks to the success of the first game, Christopher Larkin is being able to compose with real instruments this time around, where as the Hollow Knight OST was composed using mostly (if not entirely) synthetic instruments.

One thing I love that Ive seen as a comment on one of the OST's is this: Hallownest is a dead and grieving kingdom, therefore its music is far more dead and lifeless. Pharloom, on the other hand is a dying and cornered animal; Still alive, but far more angry and active.

@v2jo_re
@v2jo_re Жыл бұрын
I dont think that Hornet is the frustrated one here. We see Hornet laugh or giggle while fighting in the first boss sometimes, which Shows that shes joyful in combat. We also saw a clip and had a demo of lace and she also giggled during the fight, when attacking etc. Which means both Hornet and lace have similar characteristics. Since there is a Lot of connections between them already, i think lace is going to be the Hornet of silksong: Follows you around saves you, fights you, etc. In the beginning of the trailer, before Hornet frees itsself, a lumafly lands ontop of her cage. In the end, the lumafly sets hornet free and since lace is knowing to have some sort of connection to lumaflies, it couldve been her who freed hornet. Also kinda shows what kind of relationship they will have

Hollow Knight truly deserves the attention it has garnered. And, Davi... You're almost always scary accurate in your analysis of a story through its music. You were pretty spot on with Bonebottom! Bonebottom is the song that plays in the starting town of silksong. In a lot of metroidvanias, especially in Hollow knight, there's an area where your character can rest and stock up. This is usually a starting area that your character finds before heading towards the areas where all the bosses are. In the first game, Dirtmouth was the first town. Team cherry also decides to make both towns to be fading and abandoned, but warm and welcome to newcomers. It's amazing how you could figure all of that out in the song alone!

The music in Hollow Knight had an immense focus on the 9th which I'd say has a similar function to the major 7th in that they both sound melancholic, yet I would personally say that the 9th sounds a lot more "empty" and "hollow" (badum-dis) than the major 7th which I would describe as "ethereal" and "bittersweet". Honestly, your bonebottom analysis was like, almost entirely spot on. From what we know, Bonebottom is the first main town you'll explore in the game, and it's the game's equivilent to Dirtmouth, so you'll spend quite a bit of time in it, and it simultaniously seems like a very desolate and dark place, but also homely, it will essentially become like a second home for the player, and you'll be able to help out Bonebottom's inhabitants and watch the town flourish more with your help. None of this is concrete, I'm only assuming, but that's just what I honestly think. Nice analysis as always Davi!

I think that Silksong OST will be more string-based, given the main character's connection to silk (heck, it's even in the name), so I expect more string quartet appearances this time. Might even be the Dirtmouth of Silk Song. Lace is almost definitely a boss music track, maybe the first boss like False Knight but I also feel a bit of anguish like Hornet doesn't want to have to fight this "boss". Man I've been loving to watch you enjoy the Hollow Knight music and the game itself so much! Such a phenomenal game! my group of friends don't really care about the music in the games they play, so it's really refreshing so watch someone lile who can truly appreciate and decipher the beauty of great video game music!

I'm extremally excited for silksong, having another memorable adventure is gonna be awesome! 😄 I have no idea whether the sequel will surpass the original game but from what we have seen it looks very promising. And even if not, we still have a new unique world to explore, full of new challenges, characters, a new story and great music 😊 Technically, we also heard 2 songs that appeared in the trailers but we don't have a separate versions of them ( without the sounds, interuptions etc ). I especially love the second, more recent one: it's very energetic and fast-paced. It might belong to a boss or a chase sequence

Can’t explain it but in Lace’s theme it sounded like there was some kind of rivalry. Like two forces trying to overcome each other.

4:05 this specific chord, or mb the chords that come after, reminded me so much of studio ghibli ost. For example, if you listen to the music from castle in the sky (if i remember correctly), this chord was used pretty often, so when i heard this specific part in Bonebottom, it immediately brought me back because of how nostalgic and magical it sounded. It makes me love this soundtrack even more! ❤️

This game sounds so cool already !!!! Loved the second song so much, I believe there's a boss called Lace in the trailer and it might be their song ! And for the first one I get a lot of Dirtmouth vibe :)

Hey dude, loved the vid. I'm super excited for SIlksong. I'd love to see you react to The Last Guardian's soundtrack at some point! It's the spiritual successor to Shadow of the Colossus, and its soundtrack is phenomenal

I hadn't heard bone bottom apparently yet, but now I'm somehow even more hyped! The music sounds like hollow knight with a bit of a Theophany (Majoras Madk and Ocarina of Time music) touch

A game soundtrack I would recommend you reacting to is the Journey OST, particularly the game's standout track "Apotheosis". Along with being a great game, it has the first ever video game soundtrack to be nominated for a Grammy (in the "Best Soundtrack for Visual Media" category).

I'd love to see a video about OneShot's themes. It's got some beautiful melodies reflecting the landscape that you explore in the game. Very retro.

Hey Davi, how bout something wild? Game: The Embodiment of the Scarlet Devil. Release Date: August 11, 2002. Song 1: Remilia Scarlet's theme - Septette for the Dead Princess. Character note: There is a reason she's called "the Scarlet Devil". Song 2: Flandre Scarlet's theme - U.N.Owen was Her? Note: Flandre is completely insane and her theme is sometimes called "Death Waltz".
