I feel sorry for all the backsit gaming. The real beauty of undertale comes with the second or third playthrough with more knowledge about the game so people want you to experience said peaks of the game. They just do not understand that it’s more fun to explore things yourself…

Spoilers for Undertale, don't read Davi! Exactly! The peaks aren't supposed to happen all at once, it's designed in a way so you go in blind, not realizing what you've done by killing all those monsters, and then later Flowey himself tells you to go back and not kill anything. It's part of the game's progression to play neutral then restart completely and try for pacifist. And genocide is designed on purpose as a parallel to Flowey's own arc, where you think "what if?" and decide to kill everything. Just like Flowey. And also just like Flowey, the pacifist route was him seeing how much good he can do. For supposed fans of Undertale, people who backseat really don't seem to know much about what makes this game special for a first-time player. They just remember the perks, like you said, and forgot all about the journey there.

While I do agree with you, I can also see the other side... Many will only play a game once through, especially if they need to play much of it over again in order to get the extra content... One small bit of advice can almost guarantee that you get most of the best stuff in one playthrough (making two routes into one) and you might be able to convince them to do another run for the genocide route, given how different it is... Otherwise they might just do the neutral run and not bother to continue... Also, some see pacifist as the obvious way to play the game anyway, since the game does encourage it, even if it also makes it easy to fall into the neutral route, while making the genocide route more effort... If you don't know what's going on, both genocide and pacifist can easily be messed up in the first area, locking you into the neutral. While the journey to the realisations of various things about the game can be the most rewarding, not everyone will want to/can do the journey multiple times to get all the perks and can easily miss some of the best stuff without some guidance... That said, the guidance may cause people to miss other cool things lol. I mean, by choosing this path in the way he has, he'll probably get some dialogue that many won't get, by them all playing it the "optimal" way... It's easy to miss stuff in the game by not experimenting a lot... Like the first weapon you have has a secondary function for certain battles if you use it as an item, but almost no one is likely to find that on their own... I wonder if other weapons or armour can be used in similar ways... Maybe I'll try/look it up later...

@@KitsyX My take is specifically this guy has spent countless reaction videos listening to the OST and analyzing it at a detail-oriented UT theorist's level. I don't think he'll only do one playthrough simply because he has a lot more investment than say a random youtuber. I do agree with you in regards to how vague things can get in Undertale, and I think Deltarune has fixed quite a lot of these problems where a regular player has no clue about 50% of the game's content in a story-focused linear RPG. Now, the only thing a Deltarune player misses is maybe the superbosses and the lore about goners, gaster, and Dess. But that lore was specifically crafted for dataminers to find and share with the more dedicated members of the community anyways so it's a little more gray in that regard. If someone is new to the series, IMO the only thing that needs to be said is "there are choices that matter in the battle system, and avoid backseaters".

I don't think it's spoiler to say that some items do interact with opponents, but those interactions are always unique. You have to find them, and most of them are somewhat obscure.

I would like to remind you that its ok and encouraged by the lore of the game to reset your save file when you do something regretfull. For example, if you waste all your gold on Sticks, you can reset your game to undo that terible investment. This is not a spoiler.

It’s not just the trolls, but there are also very enthusiastic fans around trying to guide or hint players in their desired direction. They’re basically chat Toriels. If you’re at all interested in platforming, Celeste is highly recommended. Even if you’re bad at it, the charm, the characters, and the music are just so encouraging, that you just end up getting good enough to beat it. Assist mode is also a really good toolkit if it’s too frustrating to play normally.

Love how you use terminology to express mood to the audience for those without a music theory background. I only know enough to get myself in trouble anyway. You're a real one for playing through the game after already completing a few blind music observations. I think the next big indie game with notable music was cave story. One of my personal faves is portal, but it's harder to analyze as music since it's mostly ambient. Stuff like the friendly faith plate does stick out though. Look forward to your selections though, since seeing what is given as an example to a composer or what is popular with the theory nerds is super fun.

Quick tech tip: It might be a good idea to be sure you are recording the entire screen and not just the Undertale application window. And as you correctly noted with Flowey's first lines, the game _does_ auto-save certain things so if you didn't catch something on video the first time you might not be able to "just" go back and re-record what it was. (Normally Flowey says "You're new to the Underground, aint'cha? You're probably so confused.") As usual, autosaves are _not_ a replacement for your standard save file so make sure to use an actual save point before ending the session!

Oh, and to quickly answer some (non spoiler) things: - When Toriel gives you the cellphone, if you wait in that room for about 5 minutes then something does in fact happen. - The flavor text at the start of your turn is usually random, but not always.

Why are those always people who ask first-time players of Undertale 'what route' they are going to play? For supposed 'fans' of the game, they don't actually seem to understand this game very well. Major spoilers, do not read more if you haven't played Undertale! Especially Davi! The entire point of the different routes is to play them AFTER you beat the neutral route. You are not supposed to even know about them until you beat the game the first time, or if you by sheer chance do the pacifist route properly, or you knew from the getgo you're not supposed to kill literally anything. Which means you got spoiled, which is very likely honestly given how long the game's been out but not impossible to avoid. I played for the first time two years ago and only got spoiled on the route names themselves, and something something Sans. I went in pretty blind. So anyone who tries to nudge a streamer one way or another simply doesn't understand the point of Undertale, which is to play the game how you want to play it, not how you are 'supposed' to play it. Further, even if they were to play it the 'intended way', the neutral route is obviously the closest route to that. Because after beating it Flowey will explicitly tell you to go back and get a better ending if you want to, it's clearly part of the game's progression. LOL this was funny but the context of your relationship with her (as you may already know) is that of innocence. She sees you as a child and you can choose to play along with that and call her mom which would be heartfelt option, and so is saying hello, cute childlike, and then you have the option to be innapropriate but in the context of undertale you can view those as depraved, I suppose.

I gifted Undertale to my sister last week for her graduation. She's progressing slowly on her own. So because I can't/won't be a backseat gamer for her, I'll just shout at my screen while you play it instead. She's an amazing musician, so it feels like an appropriate compromise. Love your content

I think the comment during the stream wishing you had done a video rather than a stream is because some of the confusion about mechanics *is* part of the experience; and although you didn't mind chat answering your questions, they were denying you (and the other viewers) of your real first-hand playthrough. I'm glad you had fun and I'm loving the video, but letting yourself not know how things work will leave you open to a more rewarding journey.

Thank you very much for playing this masterpiece of a game! I love it to see people play *Undertale* the first time. I didn't play it by myself on release. I saw videos years after. Then I played it by myself and never was disappointed! Also it was the first game where I ever cried. To know what I mean with that, you need to play the *Pacifist Route* after you've finished your first playthrough. But I will see what happens when I'm watching the next video of your stream. Sadly I missed it when it was live.

In the special edition book of Undertale Toby talks about how Toriel was inspired by the final boss in Breath of Fire 3 - the over protective mother. That final battle in BoF3 just so happens to be called Self Determination. I always wondered if there was a connection

i finally played this game a few months ago, and i loved it so much. It makes me so happy to see someone discovering it and playing it blindly (something i did not do xD) edit: "i'm not your child!! stop calling me your child!" and "so do i give him candy or is this candy for me?" lmaoo can't wait for the next episode, Dovi's reactions are top tier
