For someone who keeps different species of Horned Lizards for way over a decade now ( And wrote some articles about breeding and their diet) its always nice to see that other keepers got their success - The most basic part is Ants! cheapest and easiest food to find after Herbs. @@DoorsToHideBehind156 A couple of nests in a wide area is enough. Depending on the Species their digestive system work with a different percentage of Ants - also the number of teeth vary in terms of their hunting behavior. Phrynosoma spp. from higher and more humid places get a lot more other prey than the desert species for example P. asio has around 31% part of ants in their diet and on the other side P. solare goes with around 89% of ants in their diet.

@@melbapeach162 I think most captive bred Uromastyx can be really friendly and personable. I have so many questions about the ant feeding.
@kamielhamers3730 Жыл бұрын
like what? you can always ask ...
@baleogunsondai614 Жыл бұрын
Do the ants get loose in the home? Ants are a huge part of the diet, how often do you feed them? Have you ever simply ran out of ants from your yard? Is there a particular preference of ants they love? Is there a different response to other feeders?
@kamielhamers3730 Жыл бұрын
@Baleogun Sondai Im probably not the best person to ask as phrynosoma are just a side project there are others that have been doing phrynosoma way longer. But I would not recommend them for novice keepers. Ants are about 60% of their diet, I feed ants 3 to 4 times a week during the active month from April up to oktober . mostly lasius niger from the garden. for the winter I do keep a colony of Messor barbarus ants to feed. They do eat less during the winter so That was just enough for last winter, hopefully the colony recovers, but I probably need to buy an extra one. If you use an antfeeder (box with stick) not many ant will escape. but mine don't like to eat from that so I do have so.e ants escaping every now and than. I have one animal that really eats everything that moves , from beanweavils, grasshoppers, curly flies, woodlice, but most other do prefer ants and beanweavils. hope this helps.
