When it comes to the Lovecraftian Great Old Ones, they fall into two camps with regard to granting powers. Most of them, like Cthulhu, Yog-Sothoth and Hastur, don't really care about you. Heck, they don't even think in the same way you do. They don't so much grant power as let you mooch off their powers -- a process which, naturally enough, gets easier the closer the Great Old One is to our reality, resulting in a drive to explore sanity-destroying concepts and attempt to draw the patron closer to your own plane of existence. Which could end the world, of course, but once you lose enough of your mind, you really don't care about that anymore. Then there's Nyarlathotep. Nyarlathotep is the messenger boy of the Great Old Ones, carrying out their vaguely-defined desires throughout the universe, since he is capable of interacting with our universe directly and they are not. The Great Old Ones don't do much normally, though, so Nyarlathotep tends to be rather bored. And giving a human power and watching what happens is better than any soap opera you can name. In a way, Nyarlathotep resembles the Infernal patron: He _knows_ you'll crash and burn. He's _counting_ on it. He just wants to see how far you can get before it happens and just how bright and destructive a fireball you make on impact. Because of this, he really doesn't set high standards for his patronage. Imagine him as the sort of person who'd hand a loaded gun to a toddler and you're about right.

As a DM, I find warlocks super fun. I'm the kind of DM that roleplays NPC dialog and this class provides a lot of material to play with. For my last campaign the player and I pretty much homebrewed a patron for him (pact of the Great Old One). His PC's a mortal servant to a minor eldritch god of knowledge and mischief, and we have fun with it. If his patron wants to imbue people with more knowledge, he just grabs a book that holds the knowledge and smacks them with it. "There you go- have fun you nerd!" He was super fun to roleplay because the running joke was that he means well but doesn't understand how mortals work. He plays a more active role in his followers lives, but more or less because he's the Eldritch equivalent of a bored teenager getting WAY too invested in their hobbies. And his hobby happens to be giving mortals powers and seeing what they do with it.

This kind of reminds me of the way one of my DMs ran Loki. I was playing as Loki's only existing Aasimar (because in irl history no one worshiped him, outside of cults that were only theorized to exist). Most of the time. Loki had no clue what to do with this servant, so he just sort of came up with pranks as this Aasimar traveled around the countryside. If you like that stuff I'd highly advise you look up the Shining Dodecahedron or Nyrathotep. I DMed a game where we threw in the Shining Dodecahedron as a dungeon loot that a necromancer was holding.(a magical device which allows connection to the old ones directly, usually it's Nyrathotep the Crawling Chaos that's on the line though) I hadn't really planned out as to why, but it turned out said necromancer was too afraid to ever use it. Cue the Cleric thinking it was some cursed object that he could uncurse and, one will save fail later, he becomes the new herald of the great old ones. I treated it as a character death and the guy who played the character made a new guy. But it gets worse. The Cleric, now herald ended up becoming more and more prominent in the story. The heroes kept missing chances to kill him and so he grew more and more powerful. At the end the big bad and the party had to actually team up to close a portal and kill the herald before he could summon a horde of lesser Eldritch abominations to destroy the world. I didn't have papers on the creatures so I had to cheese it. Needless to say it was a hard fight and the wizard in the party had to sacrifice himself to close the portal. Only the Shining Dodecahedron remained on our side of the portal. So the big bad and the remaining party (a sorcerer, druid, ranger, and two fighters one of which was played by the old clerics player) worked together to build a massive dungeon filled with monsters of every variety and permanent doors to planes inside where elementals can wander in and colonize, with the Shining Dodecahedron at the center so that no one will ever find it again. I use a future version of said dungeon as a starting point for future campaigns where the people have forgotten why it was built. Everybody playing that week and I made a pact that anyone new who joins us won't know what lies in the center of the dungeon until it's too late. Overall, tossing in some of the Cthulu mythos into D&D usually just gets some darkly exciting results. I'd recommend it.

Archfey - They want something weird, fey, and probably along the lines of bottled emotions, the tear of a virgin, unique memories, or revenge for a minor slight someone's great-great-great-great-grand-uncle dealt them Arch Fiend - They want power, they want their will done in the mortal realm, even better, they want to turn you evil Great Old One - They ... maybe don't even care. If they want anything, it makes no sense, like the third highest branch broken off of every 100th tree you see Undying - They want power, magical power, and probably don't care at all what happens to you, though if you prove useful, they may actually make you a serious undead minion (i.e. an elder vampire serving an elder vampire lord) Celestial - All depends on the celestial, they're not all good and they're DEFINITELY not all lawful Hex blade - Technically, these were made by the Raven Queen, so... death. Especially death of those who's time it is to die, and *especially* especially anyone trying to AVOID that time to die. A good patron, though, needs a good DM. DMs there is SOOOOO much life a warlock patron can breathe into both the character and the story, in SOOOOO many ways. Work with it, weave it into your story, and do everything you can do catch your player off guard, appropriately, so only screwing him over if it's appropriate.

The third highest branch thing is great, though I'd also put that under the contract of the Archfey. Fae laws are incomprehensible, and as their warlock they may expect you to some weird things for seemingly no reason. What the Archfey want is also heavily dependent on whether they're Seelie, Unseelie, or hags. Unseelie are my favorite; they can give mandates such as the following: "Paint a picture of every mountain you see. In blood."

If you take a look at Hexblades, some of them truly are sentient. The most famous, Blackrazor, has a sinister intelligence that tries to drive you to murder constantly. Most Hexblades are described as serving the Raven Queen. So in our games with my Hexblade lock, most of my orders come from the Shadowfell.
@Mugthraka6 жыл бұрын
And thats the problem i have has the Patron of the Hexblade has it is described. its either something from the Shadowland or the raven queen behind it. What if you don't want to be related to the raven queen or the Shadow land in anyway? People spit and rant about 4th Ed, but at least 4th Ed Hexblades Pacts, wasn't has cut & dry, you had the Pact of the Fiend, or the Infernal, or the Archfey, the Old Ones etc for the Hexblade. It would, depending on the Patron, give you a different Pact Weapon( Archfey, was a rapier made of moonlight, Infernal was a Heavy blade made out of Darkness and Fire, Old ones was a flail iirc etc) and different flavor of Hexblade's( an infernal or archfey hexblade din't play the same way has an Old One or an Abysal one) in their class features and powers. While 5th Ed Hexblade is okey, they really did cut a lot of material. Now personally and i see other people do it(Travis Willingham character in the 2nd Crit Role campaign namely), My Pact Weapon was given to me by my Patron, and my Patron gives his power to me through it, simple. Of course not to say that the "Sentient weapon" route also doesn't work, you can see it has lets say Excalibur or any mythologic weapon that would choose its wielder, but what i dopn't like is that it is the only route they give you RAW from the book, and thats what people finds weird

A couple of ideas for Hexblades: 1. At a certain point obtain the Blackrazor or whatever soul-hungry anime weapon, and have it be a sort of Eddie Brock/Venom type of relationship where you have a hard time controlling it and convincing it that they should only consume the souls of bad people. Which is a bit nebulous because it comes down the perspective of either the wielder or weapon and what the consensus ends up being at any given time. 2. You're a half-elf of illegitimate origin, maybe the result of an affair by a corrupt noble, and your Hexblade Patron is the Moonblade of your bloodline that you are the rightful heir to, unbeknowst to the parent that dumped you, and your goal is to publicly claim it and it becomes your one true Pact weapon. The blade refuses to bond with anyone else and sends you clues as to its whereabouts, as well as the abilities of a Hexblade as a sort of test to see what you'd do with that kind of power.

Hexblade weapon concept (which I'm sure many have already come up with): A spoon that when you land a crit allows you to scoop out the eye (one sight organ per crit) of the creature you're attacking. Doing so imposes disadvantage on the creature for attack rolls (because limited sight) and Constitution saves (because immense pain or at least "Owie wowie my eyeball"), until the creature rolls well enough to overcome the fact that they're without an eye or leave it up to the DM. Critting again means another eye lost, so you can just impose lasting blindness on your enemies. Neat!

I had a cool idea of a chaotic evil (no surprise there) warlock who has a unique relationship to her fiend patron. Her father made a pact with the same fiend in return for his firstborn's soul once they reached maturity. Being the reckless power hungry man he was, he fathers her without realising it, and after her mother finds out about the deal (shortly after her birth) she abandons her. Growing up as an orphan she ends up with a really twisted mind and a few years after being taken by the fiend she ends up as his wife. As the fiend wishes for his lover to share his power, he returns her to the normal plane and gives her some of his power so she can develop her own power. I plan on going Pact of The Chain and having an imp as her best friend, who was unwilling to leave her side when she left. It's not the strongest in combat, but I like the utility/rp aspect a lot more.

Awesome video. Great Old Ones don't have to be from the Cthulhu Mythos as they can be any creature that rivals the gods in power, like dawn titans or platinum dragons or whatnot. I also tend to think of Hex Blades as serving the spirit of the Shadowfell itself, whatever motivations that has. Maybe just to spread pain?

My Hexblade is a Drow, who found the Crescent Blade of Eilistreae after it was made powerless prior to the Second Sundering, he found it and upon Eilistreae’s return forged a pact as a Hexblade. Kinda taking a que from Travis Willinghams warlock, I like to take the Hexblade and bind the pact to weapons of particular deities, entities or fiends that once owned or made the weapons not necessarily the weapon themselves. As cool as a pact with weapons like Khaz’idea or Charon’s Claw would be I don’t see how they can’t eventually provide the kind of power that warlocks eventually get at high levels.

So, for D&D I've been creating my own campaign world, inspired by Forgotten Realms and I've been having too much fun coming up with badguys. For instance, one villain I made inspired by this video was Wulfharth, a Barbarian/Warlock from the southern lands of Bar'shovia(which are a place I made up, basically a real Conan the Barbarian sort of place, all desert and wasteland with even a bit of vegetation being valuable). He has pledged his soul to the Elder Evil, Atropus. So, Wulfharth can raise hordes of powerful undead while he himself is a force to be reckoned with, following "the Bar'shovian way", which is basically a barbarian's version of chivalry but replace honer with glory and replace most stuff with battle.

In a homebrew campaign of mine, one of my warlocks chose a patron. That patron is a god of chaos. Basically, the character has complete freedom, except for *one* clause. "No matter what, you must pursue chaos and change" Basically, his patron *demands* that the player try his damnedest to derail the story, causing about as much chaos and uncertainty as a False Hydra, since that is quite literally the one demand the patron has: I give you power, now use that power to make shit hit the fan.

My group is going through the tyranny of dragons campaign. I decided to play a tiefling warlock and kind of based the character off of Lucifer from the TV show (person that wants to do good to spite his father but has a tough time understanding the concept). He was originally pact of the fiend(Eltab) but early in the campaign I really wasn't having fun with him and it felt like I was trying to mold him into a character that gameplay wise just wasn't working. I wanted to do pure mind manipulation magic. Well the other players were having issues with their characters and Xanathar's guide came out right around this time. So the DM allowed us to do a "shenron wish". Basically pull a retcon. Monk and cleric changed subclasses and one player made a whole new character to join at this point in the story. My warlock though was a bit in a tough bind due to backstory and how pacts work. Well the DM and I discussed and came up with a in universe explanation. Something took control of my pact and severed ties with the old one. My character unknowingly became a servant to another force beyond his understanding. So I swapped to great old one (Dendar) and it's been a blast ever since. And I even had a side story of my character trying to find out who his new master was. Definitely an unexpected turn in the adventure.

Yes, but that is more for the DM and player to discuss when considering the PC's patron. If the player wants their character to have a Hexblade, but finds the idea of a being indebted/connected to a higher being pretty cool, they can talk to their DM about it. I imagine that's possibly what happened between Matt and Trevor in Critical Role with Fjord. Or the DM can just pull that ultimate being right out of their fucking proverbial scabbard out of the blue one day without the player's knowledge. Either way, point stands.

What do you think of my character idea? First of all, a disclaimer, I will quickly sum the character up here and if you feel interested you can read the long text below which is basically the first meeting of my character and his patron but it might be a bit dull or boring as I'm not really experienced in theses kinds of things. So here's the short version. My character is an aasimar who has decided that he didn't want to fight in the war anymore and instead travel the world and find a point in life. That's when he meets what can be best described as the "Grim Reaper" who explains to him what "true neutrality" means which the aasimar seems to really like so he decides to work with the "Grim Reaper" who sends him on an adventuring tour with a bit of warlock-power. And, here goes the long version: An aasimar, that has been part of the constant war between celestials and fiends for quite some time and actually has enough of it. He doesn't see how either side could actually justify what they're doing so he decides to leave his home, which was Mount Celestia itself, and travel around the material plane looking for something more logical, an answer to why he thinks this way and what he could do instead. When one day he witnessed a fight of some aasimar and demons in a village he travelled through. The village was destroyed and most of it's inhabitants were killed in the crossfire. That's when the aasimar realized what he really had a problem with. These pointless deaths, people died and probably didn't even know about the greater war they didn't take part in at all. So as he stands there in the burning ruins of the village he cries out to anyone who would have the power over death and ask them how they could let something like this happen. Suddenly, the aasimar sees only darkness around him and it is as if he was falling but at the same time he doesn't feel any wind and he doesn't feel himself moving either. After a short time a hooded figure appears out of the darkness. The figure wears a long mantle with an enormous hood which completely hides their face. With a deep voice the figure asks: "You wanted to talk to me?" The aasimar is completely shocked and doesn't find the ability to answer immediately, so after a short pause the figure makes a waving gesture with their hand and says "C'mon, I DO have better things to do, so if you want to say something, say it. You're lucky I even decided to answer your call. I probably would've ignored you if you weren't an aasimar." While the figure says that the aasimar gets a glance of the figures hand and begins to sweat as he sees something, that is not a normal creatures hand, but a pale white skeleton hand. The aasimar stares at the figure in fear and surprise as he finally manages to speak again: "You- You're the Grim Reaper!" "Ah, so they do still tell people about me up in Mt. Celestia. I thought they would just try to forget me considering, well, they hate me and all." "I didn't learn about you through other aasimars, I... kind of stumbled over this book in the forbidden section of the biggest archive in Mt. Celestia. The book was called "True Neutrality" and I was immediately interested." "Oh, really? How so?" "Well, I thought it was actual neutrality, like, a sort of place or condition between the extremes of celestial and fiend for example, but when I read a few pages I realized it was just about some very old being that somehow holds the power of death for all planes so I put it back and didn't think much about it anymore. I thought it was just an old fairy tale." "Ah, and old fairy tale, of course. Well, I can assure you that everything you read is possibly true. I DO hold the power over death for every creature on all planes of existence. Whenever any creature on any plane dies, its soul is collected by one of my many helpers and students. They bring it to me and I decide what to do with the soul. It's a hard job, especially when you have been doing it since the beginning of time, but someone has to do it. Otherwise the souls of the dead would fly through the planes and cause chaos and panic and I don't even want to get started on what would happen if a soul tried to touch another living creature." "So, you're a god?" "Kind of, I'm not essentially a god in the point of "Oh, hey I want to make great things on the different planes and do stuff". I have my responsibility to maintain order and chaos." "Order AND chaos? They both contradict each other, don't they?" "Well, you tell me. What would you consider "death" to be. Order or chaos?" "Um, I don't know, chaos maybe?" "Wrong... and right. It's both." "How can it be both?!" "You see, death is chaotic because it can come any day and in any shape or form and you can't see it coming. The inhabitants of that village surely didn't expect to die in the crossfire of a fight between aasimars and demons today, don't you think." "Probably not, but how does it represent order then? If it comes so unexpectedly, there is no actual law for death, is there?" "Oh there is. Because no matter how unexpectedly your death might come, no matter how chaotic and bizarre the circumstances are, one thing is always certain. You WILL die. That is the one rule "death" follows and it is the strongest rule of them all." "I... I think I understand..." "And so it essentially is with everything because in the end, death is always there, it's basically the essential part of our world." "So... do you represent "true neutrality" as it is written in that book? Do you not differentiate from good and evil and don't care for any of the extreme sides of a conflict?" "Well, that's one part of my duty, of course. The one thing you have to see is that there is more than just the black and white parts of the world." The aasimar falls down onto his knees, suddenly realizing that he isn't floating anymore but is actually standing on a grey stone ground. He bows down as deep as he can and pleads: "Please, Grim Reaper, take me as a student of yours. I have been travelling so long to find an answer to my questions and I believe you are the answer and it is destiny for me to follow and serve you." "Oh please, those acts aren't necessary, seriously, I do what has to be done and I don't want anyone worshipping me." "You don't? But what about your helpers and students you mentioned?" "Ah, those aren't followers, they work with me. They believe in the concept of true neutrality and help me take care of the souls of the dead. They willingly offered their service with the intent of doing something useful that would fulfill them." "Can I also become part of your group?" "Of course, if you're willing to help. I'll be glad to welcome you to the troupe. However, you can't immediately start flying to the different planes and collecting souls, there are different kinds of work for everyone here. You begin with adventuring through the material plane, thinking about all of this and sort of coming up with your own interpretation of what "true neutrality" really is as everyone has a different view on it. It definitely is something that is in the middle of all extremes and tries to balance each side of a conflict, however that does not mean that you always have to be the exact middle of everything. As death itself, "true neutrality" can take parts of the various extremes and represent them in small amounts as long as it's still balanced somehow. On your journey you will also hear from me from time to time and your adventure might include some tasks that prepare you for your work as a "Grim Reaper"." "I thought you're the "Grim Reaper"?" "Oh, no that's more of a title I give everyone that works with me. It used to be only me so people stopped referring to me by my name and a few thousand years later they stopped referring to me completely, but anyway that doesnt matter." "What is your real name then?" "....... Mors.... my name is Mors." "Alright, I will be glad to join your troupe. So you said I should go adventuring? I'm sure that's going to be fine, and what are my tasks you were talking about?" "I will come back to you once you have become a bit stronger. Then I will give you your tasks. For now, I will gift you power which you can use for whatever purpose you want. I will send you back to the material plane now. I wish you the best of luck, my new friend." "Thanks, I will see you, I guess." As the aasimar waves at Mors the surrounding begins to become lighter and lighter until the aasimar isn't able to see anything anymore. Suddenly, he finds himself standing in the ruins of the village he travelled through again, however some time seems to have passed. When the aasimar was warped out of the material plane and met Mors it was the middle of the night. Now it is bright day and the fires of the fight have burned down to embers. The Aasimar takes a breath and then begins to go westward to the nearest town that would have an opportunity to become and adventurer. If you've actually read to this point, thank you very much, I really appreciate you taking your time. If you have any thoughts or improvements on this, feel free to comment.

@javierpatag36096 жыл бұрын
From what we know, the Outsider of Dishonored is basically the avatar of the Void. The Void is a somewhat sentient but definitely powerful alternate dimension. It's possibly also an afterlife realm of that universe. In D&D terms, it'd be like Ravenloft/The Demiplane of Dread/The Domains of Dread. The difference is that Ravenloft is ruled by the mysterious Dark Powers while the Void rules itself; and Ravenloft is NOT an afterlife realm. And if you compare it to the Raven Queen or to Hexblades instead, it would be like making a pact with the Shadowfell *itself* rather than with the Queen or a Hexblade weapon. HexManiacMaylein, you may have just hit on a great idea for a Warlock Patron- service to some sentient, mysterious plane/demiplane. The Outsider and the Void fit NONE of the current listed Warlock Patrons, including those from UA.,

I've got a bit of an idea. It's a bit homebrew but for me, it works well in terms of lore and story. A warlock that had a weapon (whatever weapon) that they trained with, had a connection with whatever. Then they decided to challenge a field (or whatever) to a duel for your soul. You defeated the fiend and demanded for his power, the fiend, holding their promise but still wanting to dick you over, gave the power to your blade instead. This can also be a dance with the Raven Queen where the sword seeks blood and gains strength because of it.
@urahara643604 жыл бұрын
I actually am making my hex blade a sentient sword hoping to corrupt my idealistic cleric in training. He originally was tricked to making the deal by the sword promising to give him the power to become a paladin like he always wanted to be. After level 3 when he would acquire pact of the blade I would do a will save to see how much the sword or my character would be in control for the next level up. I would need a lenient DM though who would let me start multiclassing into paladin though. Either way if the sword wins too many my idealistic paladin would be fully corrupted and turned into basically knightmare from soul caliber

I don't think a Hexblade should have to be a weapon period. Maybe it's a lantern that draws people in and tricks them into releasing their soul into the lantern (becomming the lantern's flame) and being eaten by the lantern once that person dies, or maybe it's some kind of magical castle that desires someone to bestow the title of king onto.

One was me the Sword ( an shadowfell minor demon, that it's soul was used too make and sword) and a friend of mine that played an lunoth ( basically a fey moth girl) Whit the time and sharing minds both personalities mixed and mashed , kinda like gollum but not evil.. For say so ... More like and duo dinnamic, .... One protecting the other, I got to say it it's one of my favorite player characters

Can I just point out that the parton win despite what you use its power for. It gives you a little bit of its power you nurture and strengthen that power then you die and they get a soul and their power back with interest.

There was a fiend pact warlock I played whose power didn't come from making deals with evil outsider, but replace the "d" with "m". In other words, he got power by eating fiends. A side effect of this, is that when he died, all the demons and devils whose bodies he ate would get to rip his soul to pieces in order to get some unholy payback.

with patrons, it's not patreons, it's pantheon.

I made a character called Sesrebiks. He is a hyper paranoid mind flayer who made a pact with a great old one. He mostly does his own thing until his patron tells him to do something
