Is the davy knot a good knot when fishing for large fish such as steelhead?

Landed many a steelhead with the Double Davy knot. When the line or tippet diameter is significantly smaller than the hook wire, the Double-Davy is a must. The extra few seconds to make that extra turn is well worth it in fish-holding strength.

I would agree!

I would agree with @rickbobrick6573 …you could always do some form of the clinch knot but I would opt for a knot that’s less obtrusive with better fly presentation. I believe you would do great with the double davy.

How does this work on flourocarbon?

Works the same for both Mono and Fluoro! The flies in the video were tied with Fluoro just for reference!

what a load of BS it's a simple figure of 8 knot used in the uk for centurys

Yes and No! A figure of 8 knot is typically doubled over so you’re using twice as much line/rope. When someone is fly fishing the last thing you would want to do is use excess tippet. This knot is definitely similar in character, but I’ve mostly seen the figure of 8 knot used in rock climbing.
