What I like about Simon Bates testing saxophones and clarinets, is that he can capture the unique essence of an instrument in merely 20 seconds of playing it. One can feel for what each instrument is really good for. While many reviewers would play same classical piece on both clarinets and yet sounded same on both, Simon’s improvised melodies were different for each, brought the difference of sound, and yet both sounded better than any lengthy review found elsewhere.

Thanks for your comment - interesting to hear that. We do have some comments preferring that we play the same piece on each instrument so you can hear them back to back. However, we tend to agree that (a) it's more interesting to see/hear what the character of the instrument is, and what it encourages out of the musician - and (b) unless people are listening on stereo quality set-ups the differences will always be very subtle. The black keys can be accredited to, in large part, Michael Lowenstern who originally had an all black Selmer bass. Selmer has, as a result, recently adopted the similar black nickel on their soprano clarinets.

Thanks guys happy New Year 2021 thank you for your lovely videos that you have given us thanks I think that Simon could make a chair leg sound good! I tried a privilege about a year ago in my local music shop i've been a buffet player since 1970 but would consider Selmer clarinets today. I also play Peter Eaton clarinets. which are fantastic they are larger board instruments after the British tradition. - God bless you both in the New Year -Bill - UK

I think black keys models are even better than the same models in silver plated keys. Selmer does some extra work on them, including selection of even better wood.

Preferred the Privilege , its tone resembles more my Selmer 10S ( made in 1978 ) using a Vandoren B40 mouthpiece which speaks even easier than a Selmer C85 120 and 2 and half Vandoren Java unfiled reeds.
