Dawlish Sea Wall Rockfall Shelter Extension Parsons Tunnel

Network Rail has started building a new rockfall shelter to protect trains along a vulnerable section of the Dawlish sea wall between Holcombe and Dawlish.
The new 209-meter extension will join the previous extension that was built 100 years ago. This section will be open sided rather than a full tunnel and should be complete by the end of 2023.

I have only travelled this line twice and on both occasions I was very impressed by the engineering work of all who built it. It seems to me an almost magical place. I never realised there are so many buildings inland. Brilliant camera work, very well done.

the rocks that stand in the water on the end of the hills reminds me of les dawson when they were at the beach its a good likeness lol

When Isambard built it he said that "It will not lasr YES it looks very nice BUT"" So why not EXTEND the line via Okehampton and TAVISTOCK as ONE of the lines SHOULD have been kept OPEN

So it's going to be like an Avalanche Shelter like in Switzerland for snow falls. But ours are for rock falls 😃

That's what occured to me when I saw the sketch attached. Hopefully the rocks will slip over the top rather than bringing the whole lot down!

At 2:33 you can see a rock structure at the far left of your screen. The top part looks like maggie thatcher and the bottom, fred dibnah with his cap on. It's well know amongst Train drivers who work over this line. Pause at 2:33, screen shot and zoom for a better look
