The sounds of wildlife at dawn in the wetlands of the Pantanal.
You can sense a subtle change in the soundscape about an hour before sunrise. As the night sky becomes a little less dark, the insect chorus starts to soften. Night birds can still be heard for a while, although they're already preparing for sleep. At this moment the first chachalacas make themselves heard over many miles with their raucous calls.
Gradually, daytime birds join in. Doves, whistling ducks, woodpeckers and many others decide it's time to enrich the atmosphere with their sounds. Flies and other buzzing insects start their daily journeys, sometimes sounding like little aircraft. Motmots utter their bubbling calls while macaws and other parrots drown the landscape in their urgent and raspy sounds.
The whole affair takes about an hour. Once the sun is up, temperatures become forbidding for all but the hardiest of animals in the Pantanal. They all hide in the shade and try to survive another day in the world's largest wetland.
