Joseph T. Dawson Elementary is celebrating a major milestone.
The school is celebrating its 20th anniversary. The Carroll High School drum line kicked off Friday's festivities. Dawson's student council followed, reading a story about Dawson's life and legacy. They remembered him for all of the contributions he made during World War II. Dawson received the Distinguished Service Cross for his actions during D-Day.
Dawson's daughter, Roslyn Dawson Thompson, also spoke. She told the students she was in third grade when she learned her father was a war hero. Thompson said she was in a bookstore when she picked up a book about World War II. A portion of that book explained her father's role in the war. She then went on speak to the crowd about her father's love for his country and Corpus Christi.
At the end of Friday's ceremonies, Dawson Elementary students presented a special pin to the members of the Veterans Band and the veterans in attendance.
The school choir also sang a couple of patriotic songs in honor of Dawson and all the veterans who have served our country.
