A lot of people misunderstand season 4 and think that it either proves that Pacey/Joey are not good for each other or that the writers didn't know what they're doing. I disagree with both. As this episode shows, Pacey and Joey are obviously very happy with each other. They have actual fun together, they enjoy each other's company, and that creates an easy chemistry that was never present with Dawson and Joey. But, they were away for a whole summer, ignoring the glaring issue that was Dawson's manipulative and toxic ass (rightfully so, they deserved a break from that gremlin). Joey confirming for Dawson that she didn't sleep with Pacey isn't her still being in love with him, it's residue of his emotional abuse. I've said this before and I'll say it again: Dawson, for almost their entire lives, positioned himself as the only person who loved Joey and then leveraged it against her for his own gain. He made her feel like she had to prioritize him and his needs above all else. We see him do it all throughout season 1, 2 and obviously 3. Going back to Capside meant having to go back to the place where this detrimental relationship formed in the first place. But, Joey very clearly loves Pacey. She literally feels better just thinking about him, even when he's acting like an jerk because Pacey has always supported Joey, challenged her to be the best she could be, and didn't try to force her into ultimatums or being with him. She's able to understand that his outburst was his insecurities speaking and she's not afraid to tell him that. She's able to call him out without the underlying fear of being manipulated or gaslit by him. Pacey being jealous and lashing out at Joey also makes sense. He's constantly been told that Dawson's better than him and that he's a loser. He's been neglected by his whole family and for the longest time thought Dawson was the only person who cared about him (a lot like Joey). He was able to break away from Dawson and see how bad of a friend he was when Dawson went fully insane last season but seeing the girl he loves not able to must be painful. He doesn't want her to keep going through that but he also doesn't want to control her. And feelings of inferiority do not go away easily either. These are two traumatized TEENAGERS who desperately want to be in a healthy relationship with each other but they have this toxic childhood friend who made both of them feel like crap their entire lives in vastly different ways. Of course they're going to screw up and make mistakes. The most important thing is that they genuinely want to best for each other and they want to fight to be that for the other person.

“That thing” was very romantic and sweet. It shows the level of intimacy they share with another. I also thought it was gross that Joey confirmed to Dawson that she didn’t sleep with Pacey. This weird ownership Dawson has over her virginity is disturbing.

As awful as Dawson is (and he is the absolute WORST) Joey's constant need to reassure him and make sure he's happy with her is also gross and frustrating as hell.

it’s dawson’s fault that she’s so worried all the time. he basically treats her like she’s his property and gets mad when she doesn’t act the way he wants her to. she’s been manipulated by him for years and he’s extremely controlling. joey has never done anything wrong in her life she’s perfect actually !

Mfers in these comments either acting like Dawson was completely OOC last season and that he's actually a good guy (lmao as if we haven't seen his insane behavior in s1 and s2 as well. that mfer has always been a villain) or that Joey is horrible for prioritizing him (which is literally fueled by fear that HE ingrained in her). I'm convinced Dawson/Joey shippers just hate Joey and don't want to see her happy and thriving.

@@leilahussain9171 exactly !!! people who hate joey are such a big red flag to me because she’s literally done nothing to warrant the amount of hate she gets. she’s a young girl who’s been abandoned by so many people in one way or another, she’s grown up with dawson and he’s someone that's always been there so of course there's gonna be that part of her that doesn't want to disappoint or lose him. he takes advantage of that though and he constantly makes her feel guilty for wanting a life that doesn't revolve around him. dawson is the the real enemy !

@@joeypottersgf YEAH!! He positioned himself as the only person who could ever love her the way she wants to be loved and then used that to get her to prioritize him. The effects of that kind of manipulation don’t just end because Joey started doing things for herself.

It's funny to consider that Dawson has ruined everything, when it's Pacey who behaves like a possessive and jealous macho (in this episode) 🙂. Note also that Dawson asks nothing of Joey. It is she, and her alone, who chooses to tell him that she is still a virgin. Which is significant. In any case, one thing is certain: season 4 is a thousand times better than 3. We find the characters and their true personality, and a certain sobriety. And Gretchen is a great character. I totally agree with the "We love Jen" part :)

Dawson continues to be THE WORST character on the show 🤮🤮 And Joey’s codependence drives me insane! Greg Berlanti came in for season 3! You should watch Everwood because it’s another one of Greg’s best series. He created that one.
