Hi guys. I'm a keen sailor from the UK who didnt know what to watch and listen to now that the AC has finished, and stumbled across your channel. Congratulations everyone involved as the coverage and commentary is superb and is a credit to the class / sport. And thank you to everyone involved from Gladstone, its tremendous to see such great local support for the event and you have sold it to me, if I had the time/money to visit I would love to 🙂

Unless otherwise stated in the NOR as far as my knowledge goes, you can call for 5 min before the final minute. This was race 7C.

You have many cameras, but I think to much focus on the leading boats and to little on the marks and the rest of the fleet.

Not sure I'd call these guys athletes

It is up for debate probably, but IOM sailors can be considered athletes due to the physical endurance needed for all days of event with exceptional reflexes and precision as well (especially if wind is fast for many days, they also have to often run constantly alongside shore then). Of course, more important are mental demands of managing IOM sailboats in fast changing conditions. With recognition from organizations like World Sailing (through IRSA), it's a legit sport, most competitive within all RC sailing classes for sure. However, some see it more as a technical sport where strategy, sailboat engineering, tactical capabilities and skills in boat tuning are key. Either way, IOM sailors need a mix of both physical/mental fitness and technical expertise, it is very demanding to compete on highest levels within IOM class for sure. Hope we helped a bit around this subject! :)

I would challenge you to come and do a some racing in Fleetwood in strong winds. The lake is about 250m long and you walk up and down with your boat. Every race you are walking and in stronger breeze jogging 1.25km. Depending on the size of the overall fleet you can be doing as many as 15 to 18 races a day. So you are covering about half a marathon. But physical strength isn't the key element to radio sailing. Radio sailing is mentally demanding. It's like chess on the water. Reading the wind, planning your next move while following the competitors around you is draining.

@@SailboatRC I suggest you come to the M and 10R Worlds in FRA next year. Those two classes are just as competitive as IOM. IOM is no different or in any way special to any of the other IRSA / WS classes!

We had people in contact with us competing on M & 10R Worlds so we are familiar with those events from various sources, great regatta with some nice people competing for sure. ;) Those two classes are great indeed, but when looking all factors (globally), when one checks major events, regularity of events, technological advancements & innovativeness and all the competitors who compete on National Championships, then best go on Continentals, and finally best of the best who go on Worlds; IOM is currently the most competititve class worldwide when you sum up everything worldwide in RC sailing. Again, we do not diminish the quality of other classes with this statement, we just look on objective factors in last decade. Again, those are great RC sailboats as well, so fast and exciting, probably the most important factor that pushes people out from them compared to IOM is size of boats that makes them much harder to manage and travel through years (and initially higher price as a lesser factor we would say). It seem slike IOM simply has perfect size for that while still keeping great performance and brilliant quality and thus it is competitive on so many levels and in so many countries globally. There are more factors to consider although it is not necessary to do it now...
