Good to see you back, I'll be long for the journey. That bottom end... all the way to empty ... and inhale!

Those low notes feel a little long right now. However, it’s just a question of developing the balance. We’ll all get there!

I've been taught by my late teacher the long tones are the secret to range. Thank you for this video, and for all your videos. Trust you are well and staying safe.

It seems that many skills are attributed to them, by many different people. That’s why I thought it might be a good idea to find out for ourselves! I’m quite well, thank you. I hope you’re staying safe and well too.

It seems I don't make it to the end of the 30 seconds when I am not set right and my aperture is too opened and then I run out of air. So instead of taking and even bigger breath, I just made sure I was set and lips not too far apart and that did the trick. Now I am good on 30 seconds and went to high C#. This long note practice has improved my tone and I feel more open. Thank you!

Glad to hear you're getting results form doing them. Keep it up!

In a workshop - Vlado Kumpan told me that you are a real good trumpetplayer and also when it comes to high notes. So I am hear and your idea with 30 days longtones sounds great. I'll do it to.

Hey Brian, nice to see you back. I’d let things slip a little and hearing your words and sounds inspired me to blow again. Thanks for that, but no thanks to those long tones! Jeez I’ve been off the horn for a couple of weeks which is bad enough for your chops, so 30 second tones??? Eeessh I managed a full run on the first note and was close on a few of the others, but the high and low extremes were a hard! Great incentive though, let’s see how I’m fairing in 30 days. Cheers and regards from Brazil.

They can feel long at first, but they'll soon come back after a few days. I'm not making them all yet either! Fun to have you along for the ride...
@inglesmb30674 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your thoughts! For chops strengthening is it better to blow once for as long as I can, or twice to complete the 30 second, or twice for as long as I can?
@AirflowMusicNYC4 жыл бұрын
Deep breath, remember to engage your breath support, and then play as far into the long tone as you can. If 30 seconds is long for you, then rest until the next tone. Just try and count how many seconds you did and see if you can do better on the next one. Playing at a comfortable, soft volume will let you get a little farther. Just as soft as feels easy - we’re not trying to force anything.

Hi Bryan, I am a youtube trumpeter and the editing is brutal! I know the feels!
@AirflowMusicNYC4 жыл бұрын
It can be time consuming - particularly wrangling the virtual large ensemble videos. Funnily enough, it was my time spent editing my KZbin videos that gave me enough skills to take this gig on!

I'm a trombonist, but I teach all the instrument is public school. One thing I've learned about my violin playing is that long tones help everything. I do it with a metronome and do 4-count, 8-count, and 16-count open strings for the full length of the bow. I focus on keeping bow speed steady, the bow angle straight, and the contact point on the string consistent. Since the physics of a violin are external, and the mechanics of brass playing are internal, I think it's helpful to visualize the bow and string while playing long tones on a brass instrument.
@AirflowMusicNYC4 жыл бұрын
There are definitely parallels between the bowing attributes you mention and how we need to approach our air. If thinking about it that way helps you, then it sounds good to me!

This initiative looks incredibly boring, which is probably why in 40-odd years of trumpet I've never done it. But I'll try to seize this opportunity and your motivation to get it done and see if/how it helps.
@AirflowMusicNYC4 жыл бұрын
That’s more or less my own motivation! It may not the most exciting thing to contemplate, but sometimes the most helpful or useful things aren’t.
