Those silver fringe whalers, I reckon they are the culprits for the American couple that were left out on the reef by the boat on a day trip out to the outer reef. When the sun starts to go down, these guys come out in packs and start hunting over the reefs, followed by black tip reef sharks. It is a completely different environment at night on the reef. Be my worst nightmare being left out there by the dive boat!

What a beautiful place. It's great to see so much wildlife still basically unspoiled. Hopefully we'll quit destroying the oceans before that area is dead. I used to live in Central America and the people often eat fresh turtle eggs. One night my local girlfriend and I found a turtle crawling out to lay eggs so we followed her and watched her dig a hole and lay the eggs. When she was done (it probably took 2 hours) we followed her back to the Pacific and then we used a palm frond and our feet to destroy her tracks so nobody would see the trail and dig up the eggs. And in FL I saved babies hatching one night. Birds were waiting for them and we kept them away from the baby turtles. The fish (snook, snapper, red drum and others) eat plenty of them as it is. These are great videos! I grew up catching fish in Florida and I know about most of the reef fish, but that crazy colorful snapper is a new one for me. Super cool.

When you are both off the boat it is a wise idea to have a 50 metre rope out trailing from boat. Anchor breaks away and you still have a chance to catch the line. We called it a Jesus line as it will be what saves you.

Great video. Jack, I'm confused about those giant Spanish Mackerel. I think perhaps what we call King Mackerel in Florida, those big ones with vertical stripes, are called Spanish in Aus. Spanish Mack's are way smaller and with blue dots, not stripes.
