Day 2 - NS Pittsburgh Line Railfanning - Gallitzin, Altoona, Juniata, Horseshoe Curve, PA
I got the pleasure of visiting the Norfolk Southern Pittsburgh Line with my friend Jackson, from Piedmont District Railfan. He was kind enough to show me many great locations. Some were on my list, others were pleasant surprises! In this video of Day 2 between Johnstown, PA and Altoona, PA, we visit a spot called Carney's Crossing, + the towns of Lilly, Gallitzin, and Altoona for Juniata Locomotive Shops and Horseshoe Curve. Day 1 is linked below if you missed it... enjoy!!

You have witnessed the greatest railroad shop the world has ever known! PRR was the standard that every other railroad hoped it could be.

Thanks Rowan and good friend Jackson. I have visited Gallitzen many times, but never saw the East entrance to the tunnels. Totally cool to see the East entrance to the now abandoned Gallitzen Tunnel. The now enlarged and refurbished two track Allegheny Tunnel is a gem. Even we PA guys have plenty to learn. Thanks for your great videos!

I agree Jack, have never seen a current video of the east portal(s). They probably pushed it driving all the way back there ... Big picture - railfans need to respect the rules and keep off RR property - else we run the risk of running out our welcome. I know he mentioned not seeing any signs, but you are clearly far far away from anything public way back there. I've been back in the woods there a few times and call it quits when arriving at the first trackside clearing.

This was really a great video! Your excursion to the east end of the Gallitzin tunnel was a highlight of the video! It is a good thing that you have a truck to go on that dirt road. Horseshoe Curve was something else. Horseshoe Curve is a totally amazing location! Thank you for sharing this video with us! And thank you for posting both videos at the same time. I iitially thought that we might have to wait another day or two in order to see this second video of your trip.

I love the Gallitzin Tunnels, fond memories of being there even way back when both tunnels were open. That was before double-stack trains existed and the modification was done to accommodate the double stackers. I've even been to the other side at Bennington and I've been through them riding Amtrak. Doing our annual pilgrimage to Horseshoe Curve. Good memories..

This is amazing historical video Rowan! You absolutely must check out the history of Gallitzin - the Civil War and World War II attempts to destroy the tunnels...OMG. Thank you for this video and Gallitzen is now on my railfan bucket list. Pasha Hawaii twice daily container shipments from Hawaii to the West Coast USA.

Ken, the Reading cars you saw, were they hopper cars? If so, what you saw may have been the Reading and Northern cars that have the red Anthracite logo on the quarter panel as the Reading had back in the day.

Thank you for some great memories, Growing up in Altoona in the days of PRR and steam, it's great to see young people still enjoy seeing PRR rail cars. Actually lived along the branch line and would see stream engines on a daily basis. My uncle worked for PRR and would get pissed every year. Been through that tunnel several times, the view from Amtrak rounding the curve is at times breathtaking. Also a little trivia, my cousin is the one who took #7048 up to the curve to replace the K4. A lot of great memories from PRR, Penn Central, Conrail and now Norfolk Southern.

Rowan, fantastic job with your videos. I have driven all manor of trucks, cars, heavy equipment, flown airplanes too. Most fun of all was the time I got to run 3 yard engines for nearly two hours. N&W of course. My Dad recently retired from NS after 41 years. His career was Wabash, Virginian, N&W and finally NS. Now I live next to a very busy CSX line. Same line goes right thru where I work! Keep up the great train-spotting for us all.

We can always count on you for a really interesting and entertaining video , just as this one is . That little jaunt through the woods must have been exciting . Glad you didn't hit anything concealed in the brush . The flange squeal at " the curve " must be nearly deafening at times but still a small price to pay for such great shots . A tip of the hat from your fans in the " Great White North ."

You guys should check out the history of the Allegheny Portage Railway, which closely followed the PRR mainline. Canal boats were hauled over the mountains from Hollidaysburg PA to Johnstown Pa canal basins. The PA Canal transported canal boats over the mountains on 10 inclines between canal basins. First railroad tunnel in USA was right above Johnstown - The Staple Bend Tunnel. The history of the PA Canal and Allegheny Portage Railway is closely related to The Johnstown Flood. Lots of transportation history in this area. New Portage and PRR tunnels in Gallitzin are very historical. Next time check out the Cassandra railroad cut between Portage and Lilly PA. You can stay at The Tunnel Inn in Gallitzin right next to tunnels. Also, Iron Horse Tavern in Gallitzin has railroad theme and good food - one block from tunnels. Juniata Shops were originally PRR Steam Locomotive Assembly shops. The Altoona railroad shops of the PRR were 5 miles long and employed 17,000 people.

The original operator was the Pennsylvania, and it is,now, well over 100 years old! The production of steam engines was started next store,in the Altoona Works, and there is a production record published! Also that Geep9 is the second loco on that spot. Again, originally, that spot was held by a K4s,which has been restored to service! A buddy of mine,in high school, literally lived down the road from Conway Yard, and when I was in high school, I got to see Enola Yard(with the added bonus,of seeing the first E-44,before most of the public). It's nice to know that there are enthusiasts, who will never say die! You brought back a lot of good memories, thanks 😊 !

nice video rowan. ive been once long ago. The CNO&TP from Cincinattii Ohio to Chattanooga TN I really recommend. I live at the only crew change point on the line, Burnside Ky. we are not the Pittsburg line but we get about 35 a day and there is alays a heritage unit every week of some kind. I know you would enjoy it as all the crews are very friendly. Id love to meet you down there soon. I would also recommend setting up a discord server for your channel. It would be a good way for alot of your subscribers to get in touch with you. In rhe mean time stay safe out there and have a good one
