He's absolutely right. Staying motivated is key to starting or continuing to study any language because developing skills such as grammar understanding, acquiring new or perhaps weird vocabulary, trying to master pronunciation out and so on can be challenging but engaging at the same time. My advice would be: trying to reach a high or acceptable level in your current target language you're studying is too necessary to absorb the confidence or even the famous fluency you need to carry out to speak the language in an accurate way without being perfect. Once you've got it, you can take up learning the next language you've already picked up and following the usual steps when it comes to learning a new language correctly has to be helpful, fun and even easier than you've thought so far.

For me it always helps me to imagine a fake scenario. Imagine you're sitting in a restaurant with your friend and next to you is a couple who talks in mandarin how they're lost in the city and can't find their way back to the hotel. You say "Excuse me" and then you start talking with them in Mandarin and helping them. Just imagine the surprised faces of the Chinese couple but also your friend sitting across from you who had no clue you were studying Mandarin while he was being a lazy couch potato. This is what keeps me going. Helping, surprising and inspiring people!

Motivation is by far one of the most important things in language learning! I found that having something that you can’t avoid can really help motivate you!

Damn. Learning languages take a hell of a long time to learn (up to a say.. high B2 to low C1 level), gotta have tons of time on your hands. I already speak three languages , going for the fourth now I´d advise for anybody trying to study languages: 1. make sure you get to a high level in one before starting another (So at least a year of studying and practicing the current language) 2. be ready for it to take a very long time, deal with frustration, and normally invest at least 2 hours a day for it
