Exactly. Real ratings are 500-700 lower than online ratings. Unfortunately I've gotten a lot of hate from users on this platform for saying this. Gotham also says it.

@@tripolarmisfit it's true, I really think it's so much harder OTB... But maybe it evens out a bit higher up, but it's quite significant

For me this isn't true at all. My online rapid is 1700 and my FIDE 1724.

@@gravitraxrocker that's wild, you must be seriously bad at looking at the computer screen, or crazy good at looking at the physical board. That's quite unusual I think

The rule of taking the f3 Knight when there is a Knight on c3 or a Bishop on b5 really just applies to the Exchange Variation. That said, I looked at all the possibilities when I wrote my course and concluded that when you are unsure whether to take or drop back, taking is the best option because it is least likely to do harm.
@Blunder_Man
@Blunder_Man 3 күн бұрын
@GeorgeSmyth yes, I think you're correct, only exchange. I've been playing a lot more exchange caros at these OTB tournaments, but online I rarely see it

45:36 I also play the Caro-Kann (1700 rating on lichess) and I also struggle with when to swap the bishop off. Maybe the key why it's good to swap it in that case is because of what you mentioned a bit later? Capture the knight before the other knight can back it up 👀
@Blunder_Man
@Blunder_Man 3 күн бұрын
Exactly!! That is the exact reason to swap it off! I guess I was thinking about different variations, but yes, I swapped in my tournament today and I did much better because of it!

It's not like otb 1000 rating equals to 1700 online.. it's just that when people are new to otb chess their strength is significantly lower than what they actually are.. like u and many other... Your gameplay was like watching a 1300 play online... Btw ,, love your videos
@vivekchalasani
@vivekchalasani 3 күн бұрын
It's also a lot harder to grind ratings over the board because you can't play a hundred games a day. There is also definitely some rating deflation over the board, because of all the young players climbing up and taking points from established players. FIDE did a rating adjustment last year to combat this, but I don't think USCF has done anything yet.
