Organized by the Lakshmi Mittal South Asia Institute at Harvard University in collaboration with the Architecture Foundation, this conference aimed to create a forum that helps architects reflect upon the breadth of work undertaken in the South Asia region collectively.
It took place from December 14, 2023, to December 16, 2023, at the India International Centre, New Delhi, and on Zoom.
Day 3 (16 December 2023) Part 2 covers:
Positioning Practice: Shifting the Mainstream
Moderators: Sanjeev Vidyarthi, India / Biresh Shah, Nepal
Speakers (Part A): Chitra Vishwanath, India / Sanjay Puri, India / Tshering Wangchuk, Bhutan / Yawar Jilani + Mehboob Khan (virtual), Pakistan
Extending the idea of practice is the notion of positioning practices in new, more relevant frameworks. Three categories within this framework are seemingly emerging as the most evident one in South Asia: Firstly, one which is driven by making and materiality; secondly, one that is driven to shift the mainstream, as explored in this session; and lastly, one focused on positioning itself to specific forms of patronage.
The State of Architecture in South Asia initiative is anchored by the Lakshmi Mittal and Family South Asia Institute and the Harvard Graduate School of Design, and supported by the South Asia Graduate School of Design Student Group, Harvard University, and the Architecture Foundation, India.
