Ha, you got me peeking at my fretboard, and the ONE moment I glanced away I hear "look, look, look." Kind of freaked me out, hahahah. Even when gazing forward, you have eyes in the back of your head. No passing notes in your class when you're writing on the chalk board eh! Thousands of kilometers away and you know what we beginners are doing, or not doing. You're in the zone Ms B. I wonder how many other of your 50,000 plus students snap to attention as well. I must say Ms.B, gazing forward when playing really helps clear the mind. By not looking at my fret fingers, it causes me to focus with my ears on the sound of each chord. Your 30 uku challenge, little by little, is making a big difference. Well I best go practice, practice, practice. Hope you had a wonderful Wednesday and are having a terrific Thursday. See you tommorow Ms.B. ☕🍰🙌

@BernadetteTeachesMusic6 жыл бұрын
Luisa this is how I wish I had taught it in elementary. I, too, went the songs-first way and that really made things difficult for my kids. Jumping from C to F in the first week learning chords was way too much for them 😢 these chords are all doable and they give the player a lot of confidence
@11jokerchen116 жыл бұрын
@@BernadetteTeachesMusic Yeah I can imagine that especially kids would really benefit from learning chords this way. I just really regret not having started by purely learning the most basic chords in general, it really made me lost and unconfident when looking for a new song to learn.

Bernadette - I just have to tell you I am a women in my 60's & for 2 years have been trying to learn guitar & still have been unable to master 3 chords. I think part of the reason in age along with a lot of back & neck problems so sitting will get my sciatica going & standing using a strap bothers my shoulder & neck. I decided to try a Uke & bought myself a Concert size & loved it right away! Then I searched the internet for a teacher who took things slow & explained things very well - that my dear is YOU!! It took me a few days to find you & the 30 Day Challenge Course - but I LOVE it!! I'm only on video 6, but already doing better than 6 months with guitar! So much so - I saw one of your videos with the Enya Tenor Uke & I have ordered it - just loved the look of it. I am looking forward to a long future with your videos - you are awesome!! Thank you!!

I am almost 56 years old and decided to take up ukulele just to have fun and as a new hobby. Since I also like woodworking, I built my own from a kit, but changed out the tuners and strings to better ones than came with it. This taught me a lot about the instrument itself. I took a free intro class at our local library, and was told by the teacher who looked at it that it is not a bad instrument and of better quality than some of the mid range ones he has seen. I am still doing some tweaking to the action and am next going to redo the nut and saddle. I found you online and enjoy all your videos. This 30 day challenge is a great way to learn to play. Thank You!

Hi Bernadette, wanted to update you on the results of redoing the nut and saddle. I replaced the plastic ones with fairly inexpensive ones made of bone. My ukulele now plays and sounds like a completely different instrument. The saddle was a bit shorter in length than the original, but still looks fine, and it was the perfect height. I sanded the bottom of the nut just a little bit at a time until I got it to the right height. The ukulele has a completely different sound. It is less twangy and more mellow sounding and the sounds themselves almost ring out and suspend much longer than before. The lower nut also makes chord fingering and transitioning between them much easier, including what I call the dreaded D and E. Now to keep working through the 30 day with an instrument that is both easier to play and sounds better!

I really love you're doing this videos and the challenge because technique is so important, and most of the channels I've seen about how to play the uke don't have this kind of content. Oh Ms B, you are catching me out! I have a bad habit of using the pads of my fingers when fretting instead of pinching correctly. : I think it is a carryover of playing bass when younger. I am correcting this though with your help.This is why I said previously that experienced folks can learn just as much as complete beginners. There is always more to learn! Thank you for this series, every beginner should start right here. You are giving such a nice gift to the uke community.

So, are you saying that, for example, an accomplished guitarist can experience the same difficulties that someone who never played an instrument can? I always thought you might have the edge on us.
@danaanthereal36876 жыл бұрын
Absolutely no edge here! At least when it comes to me, because I have to 'unlearn' bad habits as well as learn good ones. And the electric bass guitar is very different from the sweet little Uke. Bass was big thick strings, wide frets and a completely different (clef) staff (bass not treble), different chords, not to mention I have to push myself forward out of being part of the narrower purpose of the rhythm section. I am learning just as much as anyone else here, for sure. :)

You are making me think of my language-learning. I learned spoken Spanish at home and when I took a Spanish class, the non-native speakers had the edge of learning the language correctly from the very beginning. The native speakers had to acknowledge their mistakes and fix it.
