I worked at a rescue and there was a donkey named Alice who no one liked. She was cooperative until she wasn't, ya know? So I figured out she liked to be brushed. Like, really really really LOVED being brushed. Since no one else really liked her, I took over her care and would hold her lead in one hand and the brush in the other. When she locked her legs I would shake the brush and she would cross the short distance for a few strokes. I could inch her across the yard pretty quick like this, and soon she would just follow me around. She went from big stubborn ass to big hooved puppy in a week

Don't worry. Dogs are very tough. One kick and they won't go near again. That's how my Golden Retriever learned. Plus. Most cows will not deliver a "death blow" the first time. They give warning kicks.

Try using a horse hair brush. Like the ones you’d use to clean a pool table off. The wood and fibers are natural so if you give them a chance to smell it first it might be a bit more familiar to them then the smell of metal

You should give them those big brush things you hang up for them, so they can brush themselves whenever they want. Cows love those! Definitely keep trying this tho, maybe with a softer brush (a soft horse brush for example), so they can get used to it maybe easier?

First off those are not highland cattle, those are hybrid cattle. Second off if you want to be able to brush your cows you start with the one you can brush and you give them a treat and you lure the other ones over with the treats and you teach them that the brushing gets them the treats...
