Day 9 of a solo garden room build with the bare essentials in the tool department

Day 9 and we are seeing light at the end of the tunnel!
All the insulation is fit and that means no more bits in the eyes, happy days!
We have now plaster boarded the ceiling and are ready for the walls and the power to the room.

When you’re putting in the OSB pattresses, have you thought about nailing roofing battens(or strips of wood) to the studs in front of the PIR and then nailing the OSB to the battens? It might save the OSB from splitting and would stop it pushing back against the PIR. Absolutely loving these videos, the advice your are giving for free is absolutely fantastic. Keep up the good work !!!

on the hibrid roof, mine will be lived in, and I am even looking at a shower, this is why I will have a ventilation system in there. I am using a central unit, but that is due to the 3.5M I can go in my country. There are also de-central units.

Have you ever ran electric above ground? As far as I can tell, this is acceptable as long as its fitted to a permentnat structure, but was interested if you had a video of that.

Could I ask why you don’t use the kingspan roof panels as a system instead of the other methods, as it seem well suited to garden rooms and has added benefits such as not having to construct the roof joists and not having to use the rubber membrane roofing?

Moisture resistant plasterboard is primarily designed for use in bathrooms, shower areas etc, not really needed on a garden room

Hi Oakwood Garden Rooms - Loving the video's - keep up the great work!! ..I have one question around steel beams - how do you know what side beam to get to support the roof structure? I am installing 3.6 m Bi-folds, and the beam will need to support a roof made up of 5x4 roof joists (2x 5x2's bolted together as the room is 3.6m deep) with 18mm OSB & rubber EPDM membrane. I was going to buy a 4m mild steel beam (100 x 60 x 6mm) to sit above the bi-folds, but am not 100% sure if this will suffice. Are you able to advise/provide your thoughts please?

Hi Liam, great series so far. Not sure if this question is too detailed for you to cover but if the armoured cable is rcd protected from the house how do you go about rcd protecting the garden room? Is there an rcd in the CU at a different trip current to the rcd supplying the cable?

The roof setup was giving me cold sweats watching you stuff insulation in the eves blocking the cross flow, then i seen the noggins. Your explanation of the "hybrid" roof did make sense but for me if it doesn't work in all situations, occupied or occasional use i wouldn't take the risk. But each to their own...

initially, I didn't think it would be sufficient, but having fit them, biggest room 5x3, it was definitely warm enough. Having said this is was not winter. We fit a fused spur in case the customer decided come winter, he needed more heat and could retro fit a wall hung heater. This was his decision and I was initially dubious as under floor heating IMO is not sufficient.

One person ? Yeah, we recently went back to a little 3x3 we did to extend it, it was used as a bakery for her cake business and she taught baking to groups of up to 6 in there too, took lights out, roof was in exactly same condition as when we built it 2 years ago. It’s on here somewhere

Hi Liam. I have a shed that I want to insulate 10x8. The stud is 45mm. Do I have to insulate with 45mm insulation or can I insulate with less ie 25mm If yes do I push the boards back as you did I have no vapour barrier as it’s a normal but decent shed. Cheers

Hi Liam. Your video's have been my bible whilst doing my build which started in January last year. Nearly finished it, 11.5M x 4.5M built under PD, and been approved by Building Reg's and Planning. It has been seperated into 4 rooms including a Gym, Sauna and Hot Tub. Got an idea for you. You have video's covering just about everything and must be running out of idea's. Why don't you do a mini tour of other people's builds so that you can give your expert advice and criticism. Starting with mine 😉

Yes mate, that’s correct. The roof and floor is where most heat is lost, 50 is fine in the walls

Ever tried sticking the insulation to the roof? E.g. like tiling and create a vapor barrier. This would stop anyone moaning about possible issues? Not an expert though.

The rigid insulation has "vapor" barrior, and the plastic vapor barrior and air spoace are not well thought out if fasct incorrect

We drill the lights 1st, it saves messing up, if there’s a mistake, it’s rectified before plastering and it’s never seen, makes no difference to plasterer at all if it’s before or after, but makes sense to do it 1st
