Yes! I was fortunate enough to tour with them for 6 weeks in 1985, and Bob Flanigan was still playing bass and trombone and singing at the highest level.

There once was a radio station in Chicago known as WJJD (AM 1160)...they played a "music of your life" format. Heard this a lot in the 1989-1992 period (when I lived in Chicago).

I recently discovered them for the first time . . These guys were just amazing. I also discovered Johnny Mercer, Billy Strayhorn, and the [first]Clark Sisters. I love the Clark Sisters too, then in the interview with Bob Flanigan here on YT, we find that, among many groups including the Beach Boys, these 4F also mentored the Clark Sisters. All these musicians came just before I was born so I just missed 'em. They got buried under the avalanche of what came next . .

there is a whole universe of (sometimes underrated or forgotten) vocal jazz (and related) groups, e.g. the Merry Macs, The Satisfiers, The Ray-O-Vacs, The Four Grads, The Blue Stars...and many more...stunning stuff!

I remember this hit still reverberating as a tot in the early 60s, I was around 3 , vague memories of Beatles, Byrds, Carlos Jobim / Stan Getz , Mamas Papas by 65, loved my AM radio .. So many more.

I have missed out on an awful lot but thank goodness some ody recorded their fabulous performances so I could see what I missed doing homework.They are so special.
@hastobe3038 жыл бұрын
We're lucky their performances still exist. They were very popular but I've heard that already by the 80's-90's, their LP's were pretty difficult to come by. These days, even harder. I'm pretty young, so naturally I got to know The Freshmen through The Beach Boys, but I've got a real soft spot for the Freshmen's vocal blend, basically made unique by Bob Flanigan's high voice. Very special sound indeed. If someone were to ask exactly what a vocal group is, The Four Freshmen is what they should be shown.

Top class musicians, fantastic singers. They've (not only) performed cool, fresh and tuned up, but also created "a style" that many others followed up through the years. Unforgettable band... Forever glory to the Four Freshmen!. (Luis, from Spain)

Bob Flanigan's performance in the '57 Ray Anthony show is perfect - it's 9 years later here, where he's about 40, and it's crazy how much of a struggle it is for him to even approach the higher notes here. He talked in an interview a bit before he died about how "carefully" he had to sing tenor, since it wasn't his ideal range to begin with - it's surprising they didn't shift things down a semitone or so with him struggling this hard.

Hopefully it was just a rare off night for him.

it bad to have ear wax? “Having ear wax does not mean that the ears are 'dirty,' it is a normal part of how the ear canals function,” said Brant. While earwax may seem gross, a certain amount is helpful and can protect and prevent dust or other harmful objects from getting into the ear.
