I go hiking there once a year and I have encountered them a few times while I was there. They tend to get out of the way or leave the area, but I did back away once when I saw some up the trail. I will always carry two things at all times on me, a bear bell and bear spray. Beautiful animals to see in their natural habitat, but always remember you are the visitor, and its their home not yours.

Very informative video...I love the information that the ranger gave us and also the acting of the 2 hikers lol funny!!! I'm planning to visit the park next week so I am excited but nervous about the bears...since I will be visiting with my kids.

Thank you for the video. Most of these kinds of official videos are pretty lame, but that was very helpful.

Emily McNamee - You'll likely not run into them. I've lived here my whole life, have hiked these trails a ton, and have only seen them a couple of times.

I am a professional photographer and have photographed bears with telephoto lenses at an appropriate distance for many years. The behavior I have seen from several point and shoot photographers is very concerning. Keep up the good work and try to educate some of the idiots I've encountered in the park.

It's the same out here in Yellowstone. Straight up stupid how people think that because the extraordinarily large animal is minding its business from 50 yards, then 40, then 30...that it will continue to do so.

Tami W. That's great! My family and I have been many times....pigeon forge is like an amusement park, so it's easy to get distracted there....it's a fun place but we've found that it has a tendency to take precious time that otherwise could be spent in the national park itself....hiking is wonderful there. We've only seen 1 bear in about 20 visits...when they say bear sightings are rare, they're not kidding. However, it doesn't hurt to have bear pepper spray on hand. Have a great Smoky Mountains vacation!

I've been there many times and hiked and usually they do not come after you. I do carry a bear bell though. Just like any animal does if they get into a lower stance then you need to worry. Like he said they rarely attack, but be on the safe side and know what to do in case you do see them.

So fight back aggressively upon an attack? If I carry a firearm. Is shooting the bear an acceptable aggressive attack approach in the GSM?
@rolandoperez8248
@rolandoperez8248 8 жыл бұрын
Not sure about GSM but this has happened before in other parks and as long as it is in a legitimate defense of life the person that shoot the bear has not been persecuted so far. But even if I were to be persecuted I would prefer to deal with the judicial system that with a bear mauling me. That being said it has been proven in real attacks that bear spray has a 98% success of stooping the attack/ charge while bullets have only 70%. There was a video of the bear hunt here in Florida last year, a bear was minding his own business and this guy shoot him, the bear instead of retreating starting to run (charge) toward the guy, he was lucky he was able to fire a second round and hit it in the head. This was done with a rifle and the guy was a professional bear hunter I can only imagine how difficult it will be with a handgun for someone that it is not experienced in this kind of stuff. In my opinion shooting the bear will piss it even more

If the bear is attacking you and it's a life or death defense situation for you and your family I think you're good. There was a man who shot a rattlesnake here because it was "threatening his daughter" and got off free. Apparently they didn't even fine him. If an animal was attacking my family I'd shoot it too, and care less about the laws.

i own lots of guns and love hunting so dont get me wrong when i say you don't need a gun when hiking and backpacking if you follow the rules and pay attention to what you are doing and understand the behaviors of the animals in your area. ive been hiking the appalachian mtns for over 20yrs and never had a single incident with a wild animal. nor with a human.

if you are legally permitted to carry a concealed weapon, then it's OK to have that weapon on trails, in campgrounds and picnic areas throughout the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It is the visitor's responsibility to understand and comply with all applicable state, local and federal laws. In both Tennessee and North Carolina, the permit holder must have their permit in their possession at all times when carrying a handgun and must show the permit at the request of a law enforcement officer.
@tampahiker5334
@tampahiker5334 5 жыл бұрын
If you hold a CCW permit you can carry it in the GSM. I copied the following from the GSM website: www.nps.gov/ The permit holder must have the permit together with valid identification whenever carrying a concealed handgun, and must disclose to any law enforcement officer that they have a valid permit and are in possession of a concealed handgun when contacted. The permit and proper identification must be presented to a law enforcement officer upon request.

As far as I understood, bears do not pose a big threat unless in extremely rare cases, and people may even want to see bears. But how do you know when a bear has in its mind maybe attacking you?
@FixedByDoccom
@FixedByDoccom 7 жыл бұрын
when it puts its head down and ears back and keeps walking towards you regardless of what you do, that is when you know you are in for a fight. but dont worry that is so very rare on the appalachian trail.

Yell at them and show them who's boss. If you are afraid they will sense that. they will run away if you show them what they are in for.

In for a fight or down for the count? I assume there is a minute chance of outfighting a bear in that situation.
