I remember liking Beth the most out of the March sisters when I was a kid. I adored her for her quiet wisdom and her selfless caring for other people, and was very much drawn to that. I read the translated edition for children then, and did not release that it only had the first half. I was very much saddened by what happened to her when I read the full version later in life, but I still like her a lot.

I do agree with you all about Beth. The more I read the book the more loved she became by me. It was her quiet love and how the little everyday things are often the most important. I still can't get past the fim version when Hannah holds her dolls hands after she died. Hannah knew too.

Here's the content this Alcott scholar has been waiting for! I mentioned before that I used to take my MA thesis edits to Bronson's bench in the morning before the museum opened, because if you can work on your Alcott-based thesis at Orchard House, you totally do that! I love the stories about how Concord neighbors back in the Alcotts' time used to keep an eye out to see if Bronson was on his bench eating apples, because they knew then to take the long way home, up behind the house and through the woods, so they wouldn't get roped into conversation with him. For some reason, I've always found this deeply relatable.

Both Louisa May Alcott and her mother Abigail May Alcott lived fascinating and unusual lives for 19th-century women. I'd recommend reading about them if you're interested. Abba Alcott was also a fine writer herself, so if you can find her diaries or letters, you'll find she had a bold voice and a sharp sense of humor. No wonder Marmee March is immortal.

In 1994, I was 9 years old. My parents went to the movies and saw something else while I saw Little Woman alone. I was afterwards obsessed with wanting to be a writer! Later that year, while my mom went away somewhere and I stayed with my grandpa, my mom snuck Little Women the novel into my away bag. It definitely is a cozy read and I appreciate this vlog a lot. I still have that edition. I hope to reread it this winter.I did see the latest one in theaters on Xmas day and while it was fine, it just did not hit like the 1994 one for me.

hi ruby! since you love little women so much, i thought you might as well enjoy a children’s series called ‘the penderwicks’ by jeanne birdsall. it’s kind of like a modern interpretation of little women and it holds a very dear place in my heart as someone who enjoyed little women a lot as well. i do have to say though that i only know the german version, and the english original might differ a little, but i am sure it’s still great!

I was so delighted to see this comment! I grew up reading the Penderwicks in English, devouring the first book shortly after its publication during my middle school 5th grade year, and continuing to grow with the Penderwick sisters up through the final book’s publication during my third year at university. The author, Jeanne Birdsall, is a Massachusetts resident and was undoubtedly influenced by Little Women, yet somehow managed to make her characters complete masterpieces of literature in their own right. Although the books are set in the modern day, the tone, settings, and even the dialogue feels truly timeless. I can’t recommend this series highly enough - for all ages! ❤️

I visited Concord a few years ago now. I am a huge fan of Little Women, and Lousia May Alcott's life in general. I loved orchard house of course, but the most emotional part for me, was seeing Louisa and her family's graves. Since I was a little kid, I felt a connection to Louisa's spirit. I was a huge tomboy, Though I have one sister, growing up she was a teen and was out doing her thing, so I see more of my best friends as my sisters. I do love to write, as well as act, I belong to an improv troupe. I Think why so many like jo, is because, not only she speaks her mind and is the tough sister, but she also has little aspects of all of us, I think. great video btw!!! and I can't wait to see more adventures! For christmas this year, I've bought my 3 nieces classics I enjoyed when I was young (and still do). For the 10 yr old I bought Little Women, for the 8 yr old I bought The Secret Garden, and for the 5 yr old I bought Heidi. I bought the Puffin in Bloom edition of Little Women and it's huge - 700+ pages. I checked the chapter list in the copy I have, and saw that my copy is only part 1, whereas the one I got for my niece is 2 parts. How did I not know there was a whole second part? Maybe I never even read part 2. Anyway I hope the 700+ pages tome is not too intimidating for my little love.

Good Wives, the second part, is usually just published with the first, together, as Little Women, but yes, it gets tricky, especially with publications for younger readers, making sure you have the complete OG text. The Secret Garden was my favorite.

Hello! American country girl here, Russet doesn't refer to any particular variety of apple. It's more of a general descriptor for apples with russeting on the skin. Think of a russet potato, rough patches of yellowish or greenish brown on the skin. They're not very popular these days because they're smaller in size and not very pretty to look at. Most people expect smooth, shiny skins on their apples. However, you can still find them in local farmers markets sometimes.

Also, if you haven’t read it yet, I highly recommend the biography “Louisa May Alcott: The Woman Behind Little Women” by Harriet Reisen. I wasn’t aware of all the hardship Alcott endured, and as a writer, I find her life to be extremely inspiring. Now I have her picture over my writing desk, and I often think of channeling my “inner Louisa.” There is also a fascinating companion documentary to the book that I think is on Amazon Prime video.

If you haven't managed to taste one in America you can find them in some greengrocers shops here in the UK. Or you could buy a tree from a garden centre although you'd have to wait a year or so for it to fruit. Not quite the same ambience to enjoy it in perhaps, but they are very tasty apples. 😋 👍 You must have made some lovely memories whilst travelling, maybe some little moments to add to your own writing one day? Looking forward to seeing more of your vlogs. X❤️X

At first I didn't like the idea of a writing jacket because I didn't see the point, then I realized that it's like putting on an apron before you begin work in the kitchen. For the apple you might like them if you put a bit of chocolate syrup on top. See you in the next video. 👋

Ooh that’s a good point! And I will try the combination - I’d never think to combine those and I must admit that I’m intrigued…

I am once again asking for a vegan favourites series! I admire your ethical decision SM and would love to learn more about it. Also; what milk do you tend to have in tea? Especially English breakfast.

Ah thank you Victoria! I don't think I'll film a dedicated video, but I would really recommend Mina Rome for vegan recipes - I usually use her videos when looking for something new to try :) And I use alpro coconut milk for tea, or sometimes oat milk!
