cuteness aside, I think it's so great that you showed the ups and the downs of having a puppy because I think a lot of people just focus on the fun parts and don't realize how much time, work, and responsibility go into raising a puppy! but also not gonna lie this did make me incredibly tempted to adopt a dog hahahaha

my best advice is DONT GIVE IN!!!! Dogs are really really smart and mess with your emotions. If she's crying, let her work it our herself - or else she'll constantly rely on your for comfort instead of her working through her own emotions herself. But you're doing sooo much better than other folks who are first time dog parents. Crate training is hella important. I also don't recommend leaving toys in her crate - crate is for relaxing and sleeping. Leaving toys in the crate can be dangerous - if she gets bored she might become destructive and eat parts of the toy :--( which can lead to scary situations! our pup sleeps on a cot - she loves it and its comfy and best of all, indestructible lol ALSO you'll slowly learn which "cries for help" = im just being annoying pls love me vs pls let me out im about to shit myself
@wwearepilots
@wwearepilots 3 жыл бұрын
I absolutely don't agree with "letting them cry it out".. that's how you raise a dog to have anxiety and instil the notion that their crate is a negative place where they get locked up and left alone to be upset. Please don't do this. In order to succeed with crate training you have to make the crate a positive place. Feed your pup all her meals in the crate, reward her if she even looks at it, sniffs it, walks by it, or goes into it on her own accord. When I started leaving the house, I left my puppies with high reward treats in their crates (a kong with yogurt/peanut butter with treats stuffed inside). I've done this with all my dogs from day one, and they have never ever cried in their crates, even when they were puppies. Your puppy should not be crying if you're doing it right (i know that sounds crazy,..like theres no way, crying/whining puppies is synonymous with crate training - it's not when you do it this way.) All my dogs love their crates, it's like their little safe, quiet space they can retreat to if they need alone time. Ultimately, it is your decision on how you want to train your pup but I encourage you to also take my advice into consideration. :)

@@wwearepilots tbh tho...leaving treats in their crate is a total choking hazard..... and no-my dog does not have anxiety - huge emphasis on different things work for different breeds and situations. congrats to you and your method tho. she is a working breed and her breed is known as the 'master manipulator' its like when children learn to cry everytime they want something. they know how to get what they want out of you against their own judgement. you learn to call their bluff and it's truly a collaborative process. she is a german shepherd and we had to set hard and fast boundaries. we never left her with toys or treats because that can turn into a total disaster - especially with puppies who have too much unexpended energy - which is actually another point, make sure you meet all of their needs before crating them. i do hope you know that every dog is different. just like humans they all respond to different things. ive had her since she was a pup and my method worked for her, she loves her lil sanctuary. she's my best friend - but with the structure we're allowed to have a successful relationship. again - collaborative process. raising a dog that knows how to manipulate you is definitely not great.
@wwearepilots

@@amandadesignslife Yogurt or peanut butter isn't really a choking hazard. I have 3 dogs, a german shepherd, a golden doodle and a lab mix. I've trained them all this way. This all may seem a very long winded way of crating your dog, people always think 'but i could just shut them in there and they might cry but eventually they will get used to it.' Some dogs will get over it, and some just suffer in distress quietly, their stress showing up in seemingly unrelated behaviours. Some dogs very obviously don't get over it and will wreck crates and physically hurt themselves, yell their heads off etc. A lot of people appear to think a dog screaming and scrabbling to get out of a crate is a dog 'acting out' or a dog who 'needs to get over themselves' - that really couldn't be further from the truth - trapping an animal in a small space is incredibly stressful if not outright terrifying. Even if the dog never associates that fear with their owner, it will have a knock on effect on his ability to learn and settle and generally be a happy, relaxed dog. As per my first comment, I stated that people don't need to follow my advice but that I hope people take it into consideration, just as you shared your method, I'm allowed to share mine and express my opinion. :)
@amandadesignslife
@amandadesignslife 3 жыл бұрын
@@wwearepilots ftr- i never stated that she was 'stressfully' signaling she did not want to be in her crate - i know her noises and what they mean. she gets rewarded for being in her crate and the stress you think she supposedly has is not manifesting in any way shape or form lol i dont just throw my dog in a tiny ass crate, slam it and avoid her distress lmaooo again - 'letting them cry it out' is when shes comfortably laying down on her cot in a big ass crate and just wants attention (or sees a squirrel in the window...). now - if she starts frantically whining in the middle of the night (or during the day) - then i know something is up. again- its helpful to know the difference. my dog is an extremely happy and content and relaxed dog - she is a well bred german shepherd with stable nerves - we do dog sports together and all of my attention, time (and tbh money lol) goes to her - please do not try to make me sound like some dog abuser...just because i gave her some alone time in her crate because she was getting too hyped up watching squirrels in the window...and is asking me to let her out to keep staring at squirrels? i never said my dog was screaming or scrabbling so not sure where you got that narrative from. tbh she looks so comfy in her crate that i have honestly considered getting myself the same damn cot to sleep on. but again, in my original comment - theres a difference between "but mooommmmmm i can hear the squirreellsss outsideeeee" vs "SOS" - which i've rarely heard from her - but she makes it known when she needs help. and by all means totally share your method - i'm not shunning yours, i just think it was a little rude when you shut down mine. like i said in the second comment, different things work for different dogs. and my """method""" which is just balanced training is not dog abuse lmao
@wwearepilots
@wwearepilots 3 жыл бұрын
@@amandadesignslife You really need to re-read my entire comment, you're evidently misinterpreting everything I said. No need to get defensive, as I never once called you an "abuser", never once accused you of shutting your dog in a "tiny ass crate". Never said any of those things. The key word throughout my entire comment was "SOME", as in "some dogs", not specifically referring to "YOUR" dog. Relax. My comment was talking about the general consensus of most people - which by the way, is true. This is a public domain, I shared my opinion, there was absolutely no "shunning" you - that is a complete over exaggeration, like c'mon. Just because I said I disagree with you doesn't mean I was "shunning" you, I literally went about it the nicest way possible and tried to thoroughly explain my perspective but you still chose to get offended and think that I called you all those things (and I never once did). Sorry you feel that way. It's not that deep, okay.

I myself am also a new puppy mom. My puppy is almost 4 months. But, I have learned that when taking out my puppy if you stand in one spot and only allow the leash to go out enough for them to smell and investigate the area. Will allow them to exhaust the area and they will go quicker and quicker each time. You may have to sit in one spot for 10 minutes but they will eventually go. Also if you know they need to go #2 I will move to another spot and do the same thing. I have noticed that when walking my puppy does not always go to the bathroom because there so much to investigate. Good luck!!!

I can't give any advice on crate-training for puppies, but I did crate-train my Blue Heeler when we adopted him from a shelter at around 2-years old. Supposedly Blue Heelers have a longer puppyhood than most dogs so I could say he was still a puppy when I trained, but! I honestly just kept him in there and slowly gave him treat after treat until he calmed down and stoped whining. His crate is in the backyard so we just progressively got farther and farther away from him in slow steps. I would keep doing this until they actually leave you to go into the crate themselves! The entire family will be outside and he'll still just waltz into his crate to lay down and possibly take a nap.

Thanks for the honest vlog! When I first got my puppy I was fostering her and she got her period, which I was not expecting!! She was in diapers for two weeks, which I had to take on and off every time she went out. Then when she did get spayed they used dissolvable stitches due to COVID and she had an allergic reaction and almost died. So...YES puppies are not as glamorous and easy as they're made out to be and I really appreciate your transparency. It will help people understand the responsibility that's involved. Love your vlogs :)

I adopted a puppy around the same time you got Sammy. After the first sleepless night I did anything I could to try to get her to like the crate. We bought a puppy toy that has a “heart beat” and I kid you not, she did not bark once when she got it. It’s supposed to imitate a litter mate so they don’t feel alone. I also set an alarm in the middle of the night to take her out at the same time. The key is not letting her think barking will get her out of the crate! Good luck!! We are working on biting currently 🙃 gotta love puppy parenting!

Also I feel like crate training doesn’t work with some dogs. I’ve had my dog since she was a puppy and I fully trained her myself and I just put a bell on a command hook by the door and have her ring it before your potty walks. Some dogs are too anxious to stay in crates, especially if she only barks when you’re not around. She just wants to protect you and gets nervous/scared when she can’t hear you. It’s hard as a puppy to not have a crate but if you teach her how to be a good dog out of it she can roam and nap around when you’re gone. Just an idea! I don’t like dogs in crates :(

also, when I take her outside and all she does is play or just sit around or walk I was reading that it's important to promptly take her upstairs put her in her playpen don't give her any attention and then five minutes later pick her up take her outside don't talk to her don't give her any love and then the same thing if she doesn't go bring her back upstairs and do the same thing until she goes outside and then give her a treat and praise the heck out of her so that she understands that outside means to go potty!!!!

It’s a safe place for them to hang out when you can’t supervise them. She could eat something dangerous or have an accident in the house if I let her roam freely at this age where she puts everything in her mouth. Getting them used to napping in it when you are home helps for when you have to leave the house

@@lindseyrem that's really interesting!!my childhood dog fell down the stairs at home when she was around 4 months old end ended up breaking one of her paws :( so that would've been amazing at the time but at the same time I'd feel so bed not letting her sleep in bed with me 🥺
