I enjoyed the video, it's nice to see a more honest relaxed form of cycling. No lycra, the latest ultra light carbon bike or energy bars in sight. Just one man on his bike having fish and chips a pint of beer and a roll up...😊👍

+Whisper's Travels ;) almost to tears my friend thank you very much indeed you have made my day ;) thanks i do the best i can to inspire and teach others through my video's. my video's are getting a bit more thought out so i can get people to share as is 'better' content for them, but that means days of editing and days before hand thinking of angle's hahaha, it is well worth it as you have seen in this day life video but on my travels i will still upload an unedited version for my subs as well as a cut version as a documentary for all of youtube. peace to you too my brother ;)

Advice? I have 5mp camera on my phone. Do I get a tablet for better camera+video or upgrade to a better phone?
@hippyswift
@hippyswift 8 жыл бұрын
if you would prefer using a phone then it is worth an upgrade, although, i used a sony nex 5t mirrorless camera to record this with and can highly recommend the 'nex' line of cameras for traveling as they are chargeable by USB & are fairly cheap for what you get. the nex has wifi and bluetooth to transfer files to your pc or phone or can even be controlled remotely. peace

What type of bicycle did you use, was it specifically designed for bike touring? There's so many bikes out there i don't know how to properly think of setting up lol
@hippyswift
@hippyswift 5 жыл бұрын
How I figured out bikes and gear to use is by trial & error, this bike is a great bike with steel frame & hub gears for low maintenance. What I'd suggest is to buy what you like the look of but a cheap model so if you end up not liking it for whatever reason you haven't waisted lots of cash. What sort of touring are you looking to do?
@Kizarat
@Kizarat 5 жыл бұрын
hippyswift Thanks for the tip, especially of liking the look as visual aesthetic does matter. I'm looking to cycle from Portugal to Greece next year and i currently have a vintage 3 speed hub road bike of Japanese make with a steel frame which i love the color of but i believe i should try to modify it for touring purposes before thinking to buy a new one.
@hippyswift
@hippyswift 5 жыл бұрын
@@Kizarat the old hubs are often unreliable if not properly serviced by a professional machanic, also bearings go wrong when too much heat is there, such as big hills or all day riding. i would personally look for a second hand touring bike, or if you have some savings, get a bike like mine as you can rely on the modern componants. an old bike will do the job, but you must be carful as parts are hard to find while on a long topur
@Kizarat
@Kizarat 5 жыл бұрын
hippyswift Good point, the bike i currently use is from the 70s and will need all kinds of improvements which i dont want to throw a lot of money and time on. I will possibly look for a second hand touring bike, preferably with a gear hub and sell the one i have, or keep the frame of the bike i have and build on newer secondhand parts.

Great video. For me, it's either cycling OR camping, not both at the same time! (Too knackering). I worry that you never seem to lock your bike...
@hippyswift
@hippyswift 7 жыл бұрын
+maidbloke yes it does get tiring after a while but its the thought of being able to go anywhere self sufficiently that keeps me going, especially on 200k days ;) your right it is rare that I lock my bike up. I have a 2014 specialized tricross elite disc bicycle, topeak (explorer?) rack, and topeak mtx trunk bag/pannier combo. Should I tour with that setup (and what's the best way to carry the tent that way?) or ditch the trunk bag so I can strap the tent on the rack? Any recommendations for modifying this setup/changes one would make?
@hippyswift
@hippyswift 8 жыл бұрын
+Silver Bullet well for me I'd dump the trunk bag unless you have lots of small items although I would reccomend a bar bag or a couple small pouches on the bars so there's a bit of weight on the front and easier to get at bits you need without going through your bags all the time. The tricross bikes look very nice I was going to get one. Another thing with the cheaper panniers is to always use 25L drybags as the inner
@justryan2070
@justryan2070 8 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the advice. I also thought not using the trunk bag would be a better idea. I also thought about adding a little weight to the front for better leverage on hills. Although my last uphill climbs were fine when loaded, I don't plan on tipping any time soon. It will be an interesting trip. It is not a triple crankset so hills will be fun Would you use a cheaper pannier and drybag or use a more sturdy waterproof pannier set? Assuming you are like me and do not already have a set of panniers or drybags? I donated both my sets when my bike was stolen back in April, figured someone else could use them since I couldn't. I will need a new set up for panniers now that I've got a bike again.

haha i know the tipping fealing well hahaha ;) ive never had a bike with a double crank before only triples so no idea how well the bigger hills will be conquered but im sure it will do the job ;) id go for the best if you have money but if you just want to tour without looking all posh then go with cheap gear and dry bags for your first few trips as it does get expencive, new 25L panniers are about 25-30 pounds a set or waterproof panniers aboout 60-140 pounds so dry bags are the way to go i feel ;)

Thank you. This will be my second trip, leaving end of November. Everything I own fits inside my backpack, but I'd like to reduce a little and transfer that to bike bags and panniers.

Thanks again. Talk about a ton of stuff. Have been looking into bike packing and touring. I am a road cyclist and am looking for a different way to cycle. This is it for sure. With a prolonged food and water source, you could stay out forever, looks like. May I ask what is your longest trip, mileage and time?

+Instramark your right mate you could use it as a perfect get away/ bugout bike just attach a fishing rod and a bow ;) my biggest trip was lands end to john ogroats covering 1368 miles over 34 days with 4 days of rest. it wasn't easy and I gave up half way but done it in the end ;)

Sorry if it is already addressed, I am watching through lots of videos at the moment. I am looking to overhaul my camp gear. This means a new sleeping bag, tent, and mattress or pad. I get VERY cold VERY easily. I am in North Cali and it is winter, wet, cold, windy and sometimes freezing. My last tent stakes were horrible and it collapsed on itself. My sleeping bag is horrible and my matt did not keep me warm. I have my bicycle, two rear ortlieb backroller panniers and a revelate frame bag if that matters. Can you suggest a tent, sleeping bag and pad or mattress for wet, cold and wind or direct me to the video of yours which does? Should it be 4 season? Should it be freestanding or not for myself in Northern California? I have experienced malfunctions with staking down with my low quality tent... Willing to pay the price for warmth and staying dry!!! (this time) Thank You! -Ryan

+The Goal hi Ryan, I have detailed videos of most of my gear in my 'ultimate touring bike' series playlist, I recommend a thick sleeping mat which is full length and a bag that is 4 season if you have room although you could wear thermal clothing or base layers while in bed, warm sicks help too, as for the tent get one without much mesh fabric as it let's the heat out strait away, go checkout that series of videos and have a browse

hippyswift yeah you've got 11 in a day and I've got 11 total. Slow but steady. One of these days I'll make enough mistakes to start getting stuff right. Not at all. I think it's a cultural thing. We have a very uptight attitude about alcohol so any pub patio would have to be enclosed with access control, and if you brought a bicycle on to a pub patio, people would lose their minds.
