The best part of being in the Infantry is... oh, wait, never mind, I'm retired. That's truly the best part. My CIB and EIB grow tarnished without wear. The campaign hat and service cap that saw much sweat molding Infantrymen on Sand Hill and laying Soldiers to rest in Arlington National Cemetery lie unworn for years now. My own 101st combat patches and CSIBs sit--somewhere--and see zero daylight now. I'm written off the books as a once-was (well, kinda), who proudly served as a Rakkasan and in The Old Guard. My time in spanned BDUs and DCUs through the IHWCU. Black boots into tan boots and then into coyote brown. I wore everything from a tricorn and wig in A/1-3 to an IHPS out testing the IVAS at Fort Bragg. It was fun while it lasted, but I'm glad those days are behind me.

My life in the military consisted of arriving at the office at 6am, unlocking, turning on the lights and getting the 2 gallon coffee pot going. My day consisted of typing various memos, promotion papers, duty rosters and other mechanics that keep a company running smoothly. My schedule would be interspersed with trips to Division headquarters to pick up top secret messages, trips to the base post office to pick up the company mail and then sorting said mail. Throw in Thursday afternoon weapons cleaning at the armory, because we had to stand inspection every Friday morning after running our weekly 3 mile run. Once a month I had 24 hour guard duty, usually at the armory and one week of mess duty every 6 months. Periodic gas mask exercises in the CS gas chamber was always fun, as was the yearly Intra Mural Rifle and Pistol Matches, which I was always "volunteered" for. Three or four times a year I'd check out my folding portable office from it's storage at the supply shack and restock the forms, carbon copy sheets, pencils and pens and various other office implements I'd need for a week in the bush during maneuvers. The night before deployment was spent stuffing my rucksack with uniforms, toiletries, mess kit, first aid kit and just about everything you thought you'd need, but trying to keep it light. I still had to roll up my blanket and shelter half poles in my shelter half and strap it to the top of the ruck. Most of the time I felt like I was driving to a normal 10 hour day job, working in an office, with small excursions or errands to break up the monotony. Weekends were usually spent with the wife at our trailer off base, maybe grilling with some buds and sucking down some cold ones or driving to her mother's house for the weekend. Mostly it was just a regular job. USMC 1972 to 1976!

Did a 48hr CQ because my squad leader went on leave and never told anyone I already did 24hrs. Went to the field for 28 days. Got back to the barracks and went out for the weekend. Got drunk at the club and got back at 4am. Top wakes the unit up and we have to spend the Saturday police calling the site we were at for 28 days. I had guys puking in the back of my 5T. Missed a lot of meals because some officer wanted us to run a few extra miles. Got back to the barracks. You had one choice. Shower or chow. You could not have both. The line at the chow hall was too long. Had to share a GP medium with guys stacked side to side while NCOs had the other half of the tent with lots of space. These were reasons why I did not reup.

The same problem has plagued the infantry for years. Lots of stagnation going on. Sitting on your ass because you were told to. Precious time wasted doing menial tasks that could’ve been used training and making the infantry more lethal. Most guys I deployed with felt in their own words “underprepared”. On deployment we actually did our job regularly and it was awesome. Loads of money being wasted to pay soldiers who essentially don’t do anything all day. The infantry should spend damn near every day of their work week going to ranges and practicing battle drills. Instead about 10% is spent training actual infantry skills, another 40% is spent doing PowerPoint classes and the final 50% of the infantryman’s time is spent with their thumb planted firmly up their ass. Long story short, take it from me a former infantry paratrooper. If you’re going to sacrifice years of your life to serve in the military, spend it in an MOS learning valuable technical skills and then get the fuck out after your first contract. This is not an organization you want to work for, for an extended period. Get what you can out of it and leave. You won’t learn or do shit in the infantry unless you deploy and those days are over.

Why so many people who want to join the military, want to join the army (in today's time when you know the air force and coast guard are much less shitty in comparison) and want to do peacetime garrison infantry is so far beyond comprehension What are these people expecting?
@T_81535Ай бұрын
@@golfery5119they're expecting what they see on the commercials, the movies, and the video games. They dam sure ain't expecting what dude commented but that is the reality of the army unless your ranger or SF. Reg army life sucks unless your in the field and that only happens a couple of times a year. That is the #1 reason why they can't retain troops.

I want to be infrantry, I scored a 29 on ASVAB this past Friday so I’m qualified for the 09 Mike Program. Only thing is I need a waiver, today I’m showing documentation of my expunged/dismissed case it was a 3rd degree felony Human smuggling. But there was no guns drugs or violence involved. It was and is my only charge ever, what are the chances of it being approved? Really want to join the army and go to the program and score high on ASVaB then pass basic and AIT.

They should do a commercial where three females get special training at Fort Benning before going to Ranger School. There's a one star general who checks in on them. The Cadre don't let them quit and they get special treatment. One has a book deal set before they even graduate. Oh wait, that already happened.

Where is the part where you unload a connex just to get told to put everything back in the same way it was and then get yelled at for putting everything back in the same it was and have to empty everything back out? Or the part where you get called in to formation at 0330 on a Saturday after being in the field all week because some dipshit got a DUI after crashing in to the MP gate?

When did they get all of that amazing equipment? I was in 10th Mountain at Ft Polk and we didn’t get any good equipment or cool vehicles like that. I was also in a scout platoon and that sniper shouldn’t be doing cqb banging doors open lol. Overall, it was a decent experience that helped me to grow as an individual and as a man.

Im 30 this year, i fully understand im late to the game. Plan on enlisting this year for infantry try to change my life.
@golfery51197 ай бұрын
Why would you really want to enlist in infantry at THAT AGE when enlisted infantry get treated even more like children compared to the rest of the army (it's literally right there in the word "infantry" which is "infant") , and the army as a whole is already treated more like little kids compared to other branches like the air force? If you want to join the military at that age, consider not being a naive dumbass and try to take your ass into the air force where you are actually treated like your fucking age instead of a little moronic child. You will be an absolute fucking idiot to bitch about how you're stuck in the barracks for.so much longer (the army and marines have the longest barracks times. You better think about that at your age) or if you are married, how you can't communicate at all with your spouse when you are stuck in the middle of nowhere for weeks at a time (even people stuck on ship in the navy out in the ocean at least have internet to check back with family at home once in a while), All because you wanted to act like a naive kid because you somehow got the idea that being a kid would "change your life" If you want to join the army, at least try to come in as an officer, ESPECIALLY if you seriously want infantry or some other combat MOS like artillery. Lower enlisted combat arms in the army and marines, and really the army and marines as a whole, are for young kids, not just physics but also emotionally. I want to see you bitch when AFTER basic training and air, when you go operational aka permanent party at your.unit, you feel stupid as hell when a much younger sergeant not only tells you what to do but even makes you drop for.pushups (infantry is pretty much a continuation of basic training) for no reason after he orders you to push a lawnmower and or scrub toilets. Either you come in as an officer so you won't be pushed around like a little kid, or you consider the Air force or coast guard where you'll get treated like an adult as well as have a job you actually friggin do instead of "training" for once in a while and the rest of the time you're mowing lawns or scrubbing toilets. Act your fucking age.
