I am also a first year 7th grade math teacher. it is a struggle with the kids thinking i’m their friend and some of them saying disrespectful things to me. i feel that so hard! so much learning has been done and so much growing. i hope you finish off that year strong!

What kind of disrespectful things have they said. Please elaborate because I’m trying to scare myself away from this career choice.

Same problem, this is my first year as a teacher, where girl students think me as their friend and taking more advantage of me as well as very clingy and on other hand boy students tease me and they are not respecting me.

@@EatShredSleep87 i mean it has its moments of course; but overall you have to remember in the end that you are the teacher and you do have authority. just make sure you set up rules and boundaries at the very beginning and stick to them religiously!! they will still love you and enjoy your class cause they know you can get on their level but you do have to take a stand that you are the adult. it’ll get better over the months and you will learn and grow so much from each experience! i already have so much that i want to do differently next year ! but the good always outweighs the bad and it is definitely worth it. i resigned my contract to. one back next year. lol

Just found your channel. I love your incentive/feedback type of plan. Maybe this could be a solution for oral grades for participation by having a talk with the students afterwards and let them reflect on how they saw themselves in the class that day? Excited to try it when I am at school next year.

Takes guts to upload so kudos. Some feedback on the "gaining respect" issue with certain. students. Instead of saying " you have to respect me" (not sure with be beneficial to improve that teacher/student relationship). I would rephrase and say something like "let's try and improve with regards to being respectful. Part of improving that is on me as well so it is definitely effort on both ends and not just yours but mine as well as a teacher".

When I was in school, the teacher had us trade papers and grade each other's pagers as she or he read the answers. All the teachers did that and they rarely graded the papers themselves. Except with tests. I think they would grade the test themselves.

Im currently a first year elementary school (6th grade) teacher but thinking that I want to switch to a secondary math teaching position. In middle school do you have a grade level team to align and create assessments, units, lesson plans etc. together or do you create all of those by yourself?

How mathematics should be more focused on practicality: Mathematics is a subject that is often viewed as dry, abstract, and disconnected from real life. This is in part due to the way it is often taught, with a focus on memorization and solving abstract problems that have little bearing on everyday life. As a result, many students end up hating math and seeing it as a pointless subject. However, mathematics is actually a very practical and useful subject, with applications in a wide range of fields, from science and engineering to finance and economics. By focusing more on the practical applications of math and less on abstract problem-solving, we can help students to see the value and relevance of this subject and to develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of it. One way to make math more practical is to focus on real-world problems and examples. This can help students to see how math is used in everyday life and to develop a sense of purpose and motivation for learning it. For example, instead of assigning students a list of abstract algebra problems, teachers could give them problems that involve calculating the cost of goods, determining the best investment strategy, or solving other real-world problems that require math skills. Another way to make math more practical is to teach it in the context of other subjects.

Hello! So I actually studied Civil Engineering in college. Teaching became a new dream of mine whenever I realized I wanted to leave corporate. I spent a year as a teaching aid at a high school while I got certified. That confirmed for me that I wanted to go to middle school instead of staying in high school. As far as subject, math was just always what came most naturally for me. So that's what I wanted to teach!
