This video is a little misleading. The only flexibility in ready mix is on the employees end. Ready to go 24/7 rain or shine. Some degree of layoffs in winter depending on the company and region. Full throttle when the sun is shining and never knowing when the last load will be. She’s very lucky if they are really letting her have the degree of flexibility she claims. I enjoy driving ready mix but work/life balance and schedule is one of the biggest cons to the position. Your schedule is basically on call. No routine pretty much ever. I don’t mind it but it’s not as laidback as she makes it sound.

100% true. On call 6 days a week essentially unless you live in a state with a lot of snow (which I do). When she mentioned flexibility I laughed out loud. This job is the exact opposite of flexible. That being said the pay is really good for the work you have to do as long you get the OT. I couldn’t imagine this job in Texas or AZ where it’s just hot year round. Union drivers there could probably make 60-80k easy I’d imagine. Here in South Wisconsin/Northern Illinois our top drivers make 60K+ with having only 1-2 short days of work per week available to them Christmas through March.

@@rogerurbanek1564hey i’m looking into this because im a OTR. truck driver and want more of a home life to start a family, is this job not like a 9-5 or i guess you could say like 6-5 ?

@@J9hunna Spring/Summer/Fall I typically work 6/7am-5/6pm around 45-55 hours a week. OT after 8 hours in a day. We typically work around less than 2 Saturdays a month. Hours depends on weather. Winters are really slow so you get a LOT of home time and can go on unemployment through the winter. One major con is that it’s very hard to make plans with this job because there is no set schedule. I said what I typically work but it depends on weather and how many orders are in for the day. I don’t get my start time until 7pm the night before. So if you want to schedule stuff for doctors appointments or going to kids school events you need to ask for a early release time for those days or just ask off for the day completely. Hope this helps.

Don’t be late. Your first job will may cancel or not. So be ready. Your post trip is more important than your pre trip, so don’t skip it. I'm a union readymix driver but I also drive tractor trailer dumps lowboy flatbed etc and I can tell you from my expirence readymix trucks aren't hard to drive but they are much diffrent from tractor trailers mostly in the sense of higher center of gravity and less tires on the ground gotta be really careful in turns cause at any given time you have about 8,000lbs way above the cab of your truck on the driver side the number one thing I tell rookies that get into it these readymix trucks are not forgiving and you don't get a 2nd chance so take it easy first thing to lift is the rear tires and you can litterally watch in slow motion the rear lift up and frame twist and once it hits a certain point its gonna absolutely slam the cab of the truck into the ground full force biggest thing in readymix is take it slow in turns and always keep your head on a swivel know everything and anything that's happening around your truck and your changing environments we work on jobsites after all and they change every single day multiple times a day that being said I love readymix its a great career and I make very good money and am able to support my family comfortably
@SkylinesTheLimit
@SkylinesTheLimit Жыл бұрын
It's similar to driving any other top heavy trucks, you need to take the same precautions with safety in mind. Most rollovers will occur when drivers take turns at an unsafe speed especially on/off ramps and hairpin turns. If a posted speed limit sign in a curve says 30 MPH, you will obviously want to take it at a less speed such 20 MPH or even less in wet road conditions. In my opinion the only reason why ready mixers could be considered more dangerous to operate is because some of the job sites they are required to deliver to can be a high potential risk for rolling the truck over if the driver lacks the ability to detect signs of danger and not making good judgement for those instances. Some of these job sites can be as simple as delivering to a regular residential neighborhood, while others can include a site that contains dangerously uneven surfaces, soft ground, steep grades at a bad angle, deep trenches in tight areas, etc.
