Are the boards for Residency like boards for med school and the MCAT in the sense that how well you do has some bearing on what opportunities are available to you or do you just have to pass. Granted everyone would like to do well but It’s tough to imagine that you’ll have to endure that familiar pressure of scoring somewhere in the 90th percentile for the rest of life so that you are not excluded from certain opportunities.

habanerobbq I'd say if you manage to score a 35mcat to get into medical school with a 3.5gpa you will be Prepared for anything, and especially if you can pass step 1-3. The boards are a test to see how much information you retain and board prep is a refresher if anything on key points you need to study incase you've became a little rusty on terminology working 80 hours per week during residency. I Doubt with 8 years of school keeping grades high and 3-5 years of residency you would slouch for the Real job.

habanerobbq Its more selective getting into the Residency of Choice. General surgery, Er Doctor, Pediatrician to name a few. Once you get accepted into a seat for the Residency you choose its 80 hours per week. Most people do Apply for Seats for multiple different residency programs, just incase you didn't get into general surgery you can still become something else, one person may apply for 5 different general surgery residencys and not get selected putting all of his/her eggs in one basket, so then they have to scramble for another residency and hope they get accepted in time, and if you don't get in your first year I hear it is very hard to get a residency after the 2nd year because they feel like you would have already forgotten most of your academics. The entire process is very Life consuming, Imagine getting into medical school, then at the end you never match for a residency and have the MD degree but no where to work, and This happens. Its a very high risk, high reward field and that's why they pay astronomical amounts.

habanerobbq General surgery is the most selective residency. The odds of getting drafted into the NFL are around 0.09% in highscool and 2% in college, and the odds of becoming a physician are 0.8%. The odds of becoming a Specialist Surgeon are 0.08% to give you perspective. If you wish to pursue a specialty say cardiovascular or neurosurgeon, You must be accepted into a Fellowship program, and that Alone is very tight, one hospital might accept 1 or 2 fellows per year. You must interview at multiple hospitals around the nation out of pocket if you wish to do a Fellowship. This Man just got Accepted into a Spinal surgery fellowship which is one year in length, He will get paid upwards of $600,000 per year and that is life changing. Much Respect.

You mentioned some valid points but that didnt answer my question lol. I wanted to now about the exam he is currently studying for (board certification). Im aware of how competitive the field is overall but you did a good job of detailing that!

habanerobbq The boards exam if I'm not mistaken is the United States Medical licensure examination or USMLE. There are 3 steps you must pass to become Board certified and you must do well on each test. Step 1 you must score a 194 out of a rated 300 just to pass, but you will need a 235-260 score to be competitive during residency applications. You will then take step 2 sometime during Residency which you will once again need to score a 200+ on to be competitive and must score a 203/300 to pass Both step 1 and 2 have around 280 questions each, Now step 3 is recommended to take fresh out of residency so you have time to really study, step 3 final board exam is only 233 questions and you must score a 194 or higher to pass. You can pass all of these scoring at the minimum, and You can fail the step 1 four times in one year, and then you must wait 12 months to retake. Step 2 three times, and so on. The most important are all three tests, Step 1 secures a Residency. Step 2 proves you aren't forgetting it during residency, and step 3 says I'm prepared to become a paid doctor for any hospital.
