For someone such as myself who has interest in being a voice director, getting to hear some of the pointers Paul gave you really helped me get a good idea of the kind of things a good director can do to help an actor find the voice that is needed. Very good video, and you are very amazing at your job. :)

These are so fascinating. If people say voice acting is easy....this shows how much variance you need to have. Great video sir!

Through your videos, I've learnt that there is so much more to voice acting than just doing the voice-overs. You need to be a good business person, sell your voice and communicate in a certain way when a session comes up. That's why I love your "Day in the Life of a Voice-Actor" videos, you give us the real deal!

I have always loved Obi-Wan Kenobi, but recently I discovered this channel. Voice acting seems so very cool; I may not ever want to be a voice actor, but I enjoy watching you work and seeing all the behind the scenes effort that you have to put in. Thanks for these updates:)

I loved the edits you used at 0:55-1:00. Not sure if that was intentional, but it gave me a good chuckle.

I am glad you included how many takes it took. I can imagine for people just starting out that they might feel discouraged or feel that they aren't quite performing as they should be after 20+ takes. It is good to see it in a real situation.

Hello, good sir! Thank you for this channel. I watched parts 1 and 2. Fascinating stuff! I'm 43 and am starting this new career with gusto; even more than being a musician! I already have a few voice over reads done (for free, of course...have to build the resume) and have a couple of mentors, too. Watching your videos has given me a boost. Great content! Keep it up!

How does the delayed playback not screw you up though? I'm not sure if you've answered that question somewhere before, but that baffles me. I thought it would screw up speech.

hey James I was wondering if you could make a video on how to keep your recording quality as good as it can be, as I'm sure many of us would really appreciate the advice

Hello James, after a session like this how long of a rest will you give yourself before jumping into another session?

Was that 38 takes? Is that a normal amount?
@JATactor
@JATactor 8 жыл бұрын
Remember there were 3 different commercials recorded so it was 38 takes total for 3 spots, that is indeed pretty normal they like to cover their bases and get various options.

This is Paul, the guy on the other end in the video. If some perspective helps on the number of takes: We were editing James' VO with some other performances that were recorded separately. Without being 100% sure of how much time we would need for the other parts, we asked for some faster takes "just in case" and might have even given him some words to cut from the script for timing reasons. Apart from that, we try to push the performance in a few directions to see what feels best: More casual and friendly? More wise and authoritative? How much urgency can we add without getting too pushy? James is so good at those nuances that it's tempting to see what else he can do with the material. So a lot of takes can mean that we're getting more great options to choose from. The tendency is to do a lot of takes on the first script to nail down the tone, and then fewer on the following scripts.
