What do investment bankers actually do? Following the financial crisis, bankers have become even more unpopular than they were before 2009. Yet, I know quite a few bankers. Some of them are my good friends. And I think they are good, driven people. So, I wanted to have an honest conversation with an actual banker about what bankers REALLY DO. And I wanted to find out whether it's possible to justify how much frickin money they earn.
Enjoy and let me know your thoughts in the comments 🤗

1. Banker is somewhat like a teacher, he/she teach or lead one or some companies to grow bigger and get revenue from this journey. 2. Everyone should know why you make a certain decision and be responsible for every move. 3. If you want to be excellent, first be surrounded by excellent people.

My disdain for the banking industry primarily comes from the leadership rather than the industry as a whole because I've always known banks serve an important purpose in our economy, but the anger comes in the fact that the actions of these banks affect the world at large and we are constantly being asked to bail them out while regular people get screwed and we still have no input in how they operate so there's no mechanism to prevent this from happening again.

Glad you liked it Jonathan! Yeh completely agree, and obviously the negative press attention following the financial crisis only worsened that reputation, which was to an extent merited... but there is DEFINITELY a misconception that bankers and financial services more broadly do little other than make the rich richer. They are essential, but must also be kept in check to avoid excessive risk taking at the expense of tax payers should things go belly up!

Oliver Stein depends on the position. That’s like saying an engineers job is to explain how things work to non engineers. Of course they can give you a summary, but without the prior knowledge, going into details would be confusing to most. Like how people can watch videos on quantum mechanics and understand the basics, but be completely ignorant on the proofs that went into each theory

Thanks so so much for commenting, Ben - honestly is massively appreciated! Really glad you found it helpful and glad you found what she said clear! But yep - I 100% agree... the hours are crazy and, while corporate law and consulting are bad, I think banking does just about have the longest hours. That said, it's worth bearing in mind that it does depend where you work - some US law firms have similar, if not worse hours than this! The same can be said for private equity 😝Thanks again!

Good video - but a piece of advice for you as an interviewer (and just a general listener in conversation): drop the "yeahs". She knows you can hear her and a simple head nod is far less distracting. You come off as someone who isn't listening generously or someone who doesn't care to hear what the other person is saying. Additionally, sitting next to the person rather than across can make it hard to establish necessary eye contact during an interview/conversation so you do have that working against you - but I feel like this tip may make your conversations more enjoyable. Cheers

Sure if you describe it squeaky clean, it'll sound squeaky clean. Here's the thing- and I was a banker, you get the constraints of the job. You get what goals you're looking to accomplish, you understand the processes to do so, but at the end of the day it is a sales job. You can be the most altruistic booky banker but if your clients are not opening accounts with you because you're telling them the right thing (this helps a little not a lot) then they're going to say no. You have to sell it. You have to get the idea of what the company is trying to accomplish and let them know how the acquisition will help their master plan. Sell the business owner on a master plan if they don't have one or if it's one that doesn't lend itself to acquisitions It's just sales with some jargon

Basically Bankers and Big Investment Firms are always look out for Product companies having significant potential for growth in future. They just pour in money on these ventures and eventually cash - out or grow their equity portfolio around them by investing their client's money. They don't really create any value which is actually created by product companies only. Banks are good just for keeping money / salary in locker that's it.

I hate to be a party pooper in the comments but this video's level of awareness about what investment bankers do is at the level of a college sophomore at best. I am not throwing shade at the creator or interviewee but it covers what you would find under "meet out ppl tab" at any bank's website. Invest banking is a lot more than just financial modeling, M&A etc. You have to work with very strict laws and sanctions on the industry, deal with lawyers, consultants and clients and often work impeccably hard to draw up contracts that govern deals which can take insane hours. TL;DR this video is just the top of the iceberg of what IBs do.
@liam.porritt

Just to be clear, I’m a trainee corporate lawyer and my pal is an associate at an investment bank. The point of this video is to give the average Joe who has never read the ‘meet our people’ tab on any bank’s website an idea of what investment bankers actually do in a way they can understand. Sorry if it was too plain vanilla for you (pardon the pun)

This guy said that banks only help large companies and that will reduce innovation. Well Amazon, Facebook, Instagram, Starbucks, etc., were at some point small companies that needed banks to expand the startup. If banks didn’t help them, then we wouldn’t have the innovation we have today. Nowadays, you click on an item you like and it’s here in less than 2 days. Large companies also need to continually innovate in order to stay ahead of the competition. If blockbuster would’ve had to mentality to innovate and provide a streaming service, then it wouldn’t have gone under. Blockbuster was once a media giant and it collapsed due to lack of insight and innovation.

Is it difficult to make a career change from a different path to banking? I achieved a first class degree from a mid-tier uni and in my late 20's in which I have a passion to now move into finance. Thanks!

Nice Q&A. The numbers for tech is kind of outdated. Google/FB entry level are getting paid around 180k. Amazon/Microsoft pays around 160k for entry level. I'm surprised IB and consulting TC numbers are that low. Especially BCG at only 90k.

I've worked in this area for a few years and yes it's hard but not as people think and not at all like this video is portrayed. Investment banking consists of over 10 different intense areas and worked in risk I can tell you that traders along with a lot of other staff are overhyped and are hired on the basis of their sharpness not really their credentials. Analysts are again overhyped by the outer world. Its number-crunching and understanding the business. I personally think it's not as it sounds, you just need to manage your time as it's very dynamic and a lot of senior executives have very little time to get a hold off so everything has to be 100 percent, so usually, people take that as high pressure. I don't think it's hard. but I know its an industry with no real ethics. over the years I have noticed that people meeting high profile executives and successful people in top tier company's along with working on specific systems, like Bloomberg and other proprietary systems, usually people become high headed and tend to pose that its a very complicated skill. I think being a KZbinr might be tougher than being a banker or even working in a coffee shop would be tough. So its more of an act to show off because the wages are high.

It would be interesting to know at which bank she's working. Cause tbh 10-15 hours per day isn't that much. In the last 6 weeks I have had once a week with 80hours or less and 2 or 3 weeks with +95hours. Also you dont spend nearly as much time building models or interacting with clients as she said. Especially if you're an analyst you will spend much more time doing research (especially at MM, Boutique not so much at a BB). Furthermore when a deal progresses (after IM), you spend literally all of your time doing DD.

There’s no “innovation” in banking. Since time immemorial it’s simply raising capital for both sides of the equation.

Usually analysts have a bachelor's degree, after 3 years the do their MBA and come back. A master's degree like the one you mentioned is enough provided other things that round up your profile
@FriendlyNeighbourhoodSpidey

A bachelor's degree in finance/economics/business/accounting, or a similar subject is most common. But if you have an MBA, you can get into banking as an associate, one rank higher than an analyst. The competition is tough though, you'd usually need to get your degree from a good university with a good reputation and have at least one internship with a bank, or maybe an accounting or consulting firm.

There is no age limit as such. Most individuals enter after they've got atleast a graduate degree, meaning they're around 21-23 years old. Hope this helps :)

I have no interest in becoming an investment banker, but I'll say two things: *It was insightful to hear her say that investment bankers actually do create an amount of value that can justify how much they're paid. Personally I think that if they didn't, it's likely they wouldn't be paid as much as they are. * What she said about the friends she's made because of her job kind of touch my soul little bit, haha. I do have an impression of investment analysts as driven, effective, charming and clever people, interesting to have that impression validated a bit.

Wtf, 4080 hrs a year which is a little under 80 hours a week. What type of bank did she work at? That’s rookie numbers in this racket. We’ve made interns stay that long.

It's 85-90 hours a week if you take into account holidays and bank holidays (I'm in the UK, so we do get a little more holiday than in the US)... It's based on the average throughout the year. That's not to say that it is uncommon to work several 100+ hour weeks... that happens all the time. It's just to say that this is balanced out by some 75-hour weeks, on the basis of articles I've read and every banker I know across top banks. www.wallstreetoasis.com/forums/investment-banking-hours-what-to-expect

It’s actually really interesting. The appeal is the people you immerse yourself with (at top banks, literally everyone is prodigious in some way shape or form) which leads to incredibly interesting friendships. There’s also an inherent camaraderie working towards ultra high pressure deadlines which are very impactful. I compare the feeling to grinding the night before a university exam, except in banking it is far more common. It’s definitely not for everyone, but for myself and a lot of others (thats why it’s so unbelievably competitive), I am at my best when working towards something meaningful and challenging. In that sense, investment banking is incredibly captivating.
