Me too! I learn so much and somehow it feels so relaxing to me just watching the roasting process.

Impressive that you have created a coffee business for yourself. Your excitement shows! Did I misunderstand your package size? Ise your standard package size 10 oz?

10oz is actually a typical US thing and on the bigger side of normal specialty coffee bags. Most common are 200/250g bags (~7-9oz) or even 100/125g for more premium offerings. Some US roasters like SEY use metric units for their packaging

Thanks for watching. Appreciate the comment! Yes, 10oz is the standard size bag for most of our coffee. Our reserve or limited lots will be in 8oz size bags most of the time. It really depends on the coffee.

Great demo’. What made you choose the artisan 3e fluid air bed over a small capacity drum roaster? Have you used both methods of roasting?

It’s usually easier to achieve an even roast with fluid bed.

Great question! It was a tough decision. All roasting courses that I took over the years involved drum roasters, so I was naturally drawn to them. That was also my first roaster. But when I started to learn more about fluid bed and how they can typically provide a more even roast, with less chance of scorching the beans, I was sold. This was an important selling point because I was going to be roasting many different types of varieties, knowing that each one roasts differently. I didn't want to waste a phenomenal geisha on scorched beans. This isn't to say that I hate drum roasters, the natural upgrade will probably be to a Loring or some sort of hybrid in the future.

@@StraitCoffeeRoasters thanks for replying, that’s really interesting, I started roasting with a domestic air roaster called a Hearthenware i roast II which was very small capacity 150g but partly programmable, great till something went wrong, I then started with a heat gun out of necessity. Sample Drum roasters are so expensive, variable in reputation, they’re so big and heavy but largely the coffee community are negative about air roasters and there are less manufacturers and ergo less information and experience with them. I wonder if it’s partly confirmation bias: they’ve been told drums are best and so buy them and so think they are.

Your vid just popped up in my feed. Nice. Is the artisan roster strictly manual? How do you ensure a consistent roast?

It is! But I prefer it that way. It gives me full control over the roast. I can determine when to turn up/down the heat and pull the roast. I make very in-depth roasting profiles that I follow for each roast, which ensures consistency. There is an automatic device that Hermetheus built, which attaches to the loft knob and provides direct access to Artisan software, but I don't use it. I've heard it's pretty good though!

What’s been the feedback on selling 10oz bags compared to 12oz?

Hmm, I've never really had the question before, in person or online. The one I get asked about the most is if we offer 1lb bags.
