Day Sailing a Catalina 22 - Episode 1 Part 1

We joined the Swans Sailing Club located out of Frenchman's Bay Marina in Pickering this summer. The club has two Catalina 22 day sailers for club members to use. On this day, we took one of the Catalina boats out for an afternoon day sail on Lake Ontario.

My wife and I met when we were cooks on the tallships Lady Washington and Hawaiian Chieftan. We had kids, and now that they are a little grown up are looking to buy a catalina 22 !! So excited to get back into sailing, thank you so much for this! The sequential narration is really helpful and encouraging!

If you connect a bungee cord from the end of your boom to the tiller the boat will automatically point into the wind.

Interesting. I've heard of sheet to tiller system but not the tiller to boom. May give that a try next time.

@@JohnBraman413 I don’t have a video reference, it’s very simple way to keep the vessel pointed into the wind as the main is raised or lowered. I’d just clip one hook on the end of a bungee cord to the end of the boom, the other goes to the end of the tiller where my hand would grip. The rudder then has to align with with the boom/mainsail as it’s affected by the wind, it’s a wind vane. If a small outboard is in gear at dead slow the main can still maintain the bow into the wind without any need to steer the outboard. . Don’t over think it. Having the vessel pointed into the wind makes it much easier to raise or lower the mainsail as the wind pressure is relieved from the sail.

Thanks! I started sailing over 20 years ago but stopped 10 years ago. Just got back into it again last year. This summer, I joined a boat-sharing club. Are you learning on your own boat or boat-sharing?

@@Lucilla we recently acquired our uncle's 1979 Pearson 26 foot sailboat. We are joining our local yacht club in the spring to learn as much as we can. You guys are inspiring us to video our journey and video it for failures and triumphs. Can I ask what camera you are using, or suggest one ?

I've been using the DJI Osmo Action Waterproof 4K camera. Great for stabilization, but the internal audio isn't of high quality unless you add an external mic adaptor. It's attached to a GoPole Bobber Floating Hand Grip. If it goes overboard, it's suppose to just float on the water.

Thanks. That's kind of you to say that, knowing there are many KZbin video channels with better sailing videos and instructions :-) At your yacht club, join the racing programs (if they have them). You'll pick up sailing techniques really quickly. Good luck!

Glad to see you closing the hatch before you went up on deck. That's a long dangerous fall into the cabin from a misstep. Wish more people would do this

I agree! It's one of the first things I've learned in my CYA Sail Canada Basic Cruising Standards course, and amplified by boat club skippers during the early years of learning to sail. They don't want to see the crew hurt!

I did it with one leg on the forward hatch once dowsing a spinnaker. Boy did that ever hurt!
