This series was a one-off that aired 6 episodes in a month back in 94 and then disappeared. The man who wrote it and starred, Chris Morris, did a similiar series in 97 called Brass Eye, which was another parody of news and factual documentaries and was also brilliant and very funny. He did an episode on a new drug called CAKE, got a few celebs involved without really telling them it was all a piss-take and even got one Member of Parliament to ask a question about this made-up drug in parliament. Chris Morris was involved in writing for other very funny people, including Stewart Lee and Steve Coogan. Choose any episode from the Day Today or Brass Eye and you'll love it - as will we! Do the whole 12 episodes from both and we'll love you even more!

"The Day Today" came from Chris Morris's original radio series called "On The Hour" in '91-'92 - it was a great idea and surprising it had never really been done before then (there were plenty of newsreader parodies before, but not a whole news programme), but then the constant 24-hour rolling news broadcasts only really became a thing in the late 80s/early 80s as satellite technology improved.

This was such a perfect satire of TV news genre conventions in structure and form that we actually studied it in school There’’s lots of contemporary references to British politics of the time that might not translate to the modern day. All of the clips of politicians were real clips taken from news footage and repurposed. There were also strict and slightly ridiculous broadcasting restrictions put upon Sinn Fein in Britain in the ‘90s.
@patrickmaloney6440 Жыл бұрын
The helium inhaling was because at that time the voices of the Sinn Fein representatives had to be voiced by an actor because the government refused to allow them to be broadcasted. Bonkers.

The Peter O'Hanraha-Hanrahan clips are comedy gold. They did a 9/11 sketch which is way funnier than it sounds. Peter is apparently in the Trade Centre discussing a deal minutes after the attack and doesn't mention it, when he finds out the attack happened, he admits he's not there and he'd overslept and was just pretending. Patrick Marber played the character, he wrote the 2004 film Closer.

The maddest thing is the politician speaking after inhaling helium is based in reality. Sinn Fein statements on the News back then had to have a actor doing an obvious voiceover. For reasons.

I recorded these on VHS when I was in my late teens. My friend rings me and says he's having a party because his parents went away on holiday. I take the cassette to the party. We're watching it and the friend who house it is, walks into the room. He thinks it's a real news report and that Noel Edmunds is involved in an armed siege with police!! Can't remember when realised it was all fake (might have been the exploding terrorist dog?) but he made it even funnier :)

Quite a good selection of clips but nowhere near the best and many cut short. Any show written and produced by Chris Morris and Armanda Iannucci was bound to be superb. That it also starred Steve Coogan and brought us Alan Partridge. And the rest of the cast are brilliant too. They spoiled us is in the 90s. Peter O-Hanraha-Hanrahan's special report from New York, Sep 11 2001 (audio only) is worth hearing.

You should of done this before I'm Alan Partridge, to get full perspective of the character. Day Today follows on from a radio show called On The Hour and continues with Knowing Me, Knowing You-with Alan Partridge, which was far funnier than I'm Alan Partridge. It was loosely based on another talk show host called Richard Madeley amongst others and features lots of the faces from Day Today. Chris Morris went on to do Brasseye (a euphemism for your butthole) which was a spoof docu-series, which was dark humour covering a different subject each episode. Then he made Jam, which is the most darkest and twisted comedy you'll find. Hope you watch them all, judging by what I've seen, you'll both love them!
